For any reader interested in knowing more about Princess May of Teck, two volumes stand out. Firstly, Queen Mary (George Allen & Unwin 1959), the authorised biography by James Pope-Hennessy and as yet unsurpassed. Secondly, The Quest for Queen Mary (Zuleika 2018), Hugo Vickers’ riveting and often highly amusing disclosure of the material that Pope-Hennessy was unable to publish sixty years ago.
