  CHAPTER 1

  Spencer

  Age 10

She’s so pretty. Like really pretty. Is it weird that I think she’s pretty? I’ve never liked a girl before, but for some reason, I can’t keep my eyes off of Ivy Sinclair as she sits out back by the pool with my older sister, Tia.

They’re best friends so I see her all the time, and I never cared about the way the sun makes her black hair shine or how brightly she smiles when she laughs. Nor have I ever felt a funny feeling in my belly when she looks at me.

My friends think girls are stupid, but I don’t think that way, not with Ivy.

I’m standing behind the glass sliding door watching them when I see them get up from their chairs and walk toward me. I panic, my eyes going wide as I run over to sit on the kitchen island and act like I wasn’t watching them.

“Hey there, kiddo,” Ivy says, ruffling my hair as she walks by. I frown, not liking that she thinks of me as just her best friend’s kid brother... but also loving the fact that she touched me!

“Hey, Spencer. We're going to the beach later, wanna come?” Tia asks as she takes the lemonade out of the fridge.

“Yeah, if Mom and Dad let me,” I tell her.

“Don’t worry, Spence, I’ll talk to them. They never say no to me,” Ivy says with a wink that has me blushing. Oh God, kill me now.

  Age 13

It’s been three years since I first realized I had a thing for Ivy. Three years and I’m still into her. Now more than ever. Back then it was just a crush, but now? I think I’m in love with her.

She’s all I think about, dream about. Sadly, she still sees me as Tia’s kid brother. They still invite me to things and let me hang out when she’s over, but she’s a sixteen year old girl. She doesn’t want to be with me. And that kills me. But it’s alright, only a few more years and I’ll be a man. A real man and she won't be able to only see me as a kid anymore. I don’t plan on giving up on her any time soon. So for now, I’ll enjoy what time I can get with her and hope it’s enough.

“If you keep staring like that, she’s gonna think you're a creeper,” Tia teases from behind me, making me jump.

“I’m not staring at anyone,” I mutter as I look away from Ivy who’s standing in our driveway with her stepbrother and his best friend, laughing at something he said. And then I see it, the way she looks at him and my heart breaks. It’s how I look at her.

I’m just being silly. That’s her step-brother. She’s not going to end up with her step-brother... right? No, that’s crazy.

“If you say so,” Tia replies. “Sorry you can't come with us today. Not enough room in the car.”

“But there’s five seats and only four of you,” I point out, not that I really care about going with them. I don’t know Calix or Carter very well, but they treat me even more like a kid than Ivy does.

“Ivy has a date,” Tia informs me, sounding almost regretful at having to tell me the news.

“Oh,” I sigh, my voice coming off more hurt than I’d like. “Cool. Ah, have fun,” I say, taking one last look at the girl who owns my heart before turning around and taking off up the stairs.

Throwing myself on my bed, I try not to cry. I’m a guy, I shouldn’t be crying over a girl. Only she’s not just any girl. The idea of her being with anyone else really fucking hurts. I’m still not giving up. I’ll never give up on Ivy.

  Age 15

Why the fuck did she have to show up here with a fucking guy? What kind of name is Todd anyways? Stupid dumb jock. Does she not know that he’s a player? I’m pretty sure I’ve seen him making out behind the bleachers with three different girls this week alone. I could see them from where my friends and I sat for lunch. There’s no missing that Justin Bieber haircut.

“You okay?” Tia asks as I continue to glare at the two of them sitting on my fucking couch.

“Yeah, I’m fine. Why?” I ask, looking at my sister.

“Because it looks like you're ready to commit murder,” she states with an amused grin. Then her eyes soften. “Don’t worry about that dude. He’s not gonna be around for long. She’s too good for him.”

“Way too fucking good for him,” I mutter my agreement.

It’s a few weeks later and I’m standing in my room like a complete idiot with my bed full of gifts. “She’s gonna think you're weird.” I sigh as I look at the teddy bear, flowers, and Ivy’s favorite candy, strawberry shake gummy bottles.

It’s Ivy’s eighteenth birthday, and I couldn’t not get her anything. I want nothing more than to tell her how I feel, to admit how madly in love with her I am. But I told myself not until I present as an Alpha. Until I’m big, strong, and everything she could want.

Crying has me turning around to my open door. Tia walks by holding a crying Ivy and a low growl builds in my chest. I’m out of my room and following after them before I even make a conscious decision to do so.

Tia helps Ivy sit down on her bed. “I’ll get you a bottle of water and you can tell me everything, okay?” Tia soothes.

Ivy nods, wiping her eyes. “God, I’m such a baby.” She laughs.

“No, you're a girl who just got her heart broken. Give yourself a break,” Tia corrects getting up off the bed and leaving the room.

When Tia goes down the stairs, I step into her room. “Are you okay?” I ask Ivy, my voice soft.

“Oh, hi,” Ivy says, letting out a breath. “I’ll be fine. It’s just a really messed up day.”

“It’s your birthday, how bad could it be?” I ask, taking a seat next to her.

“Really fucking bad.” She laughs again but this one isn’t filled with humor.

“Wanna tell me about it?” I ask.

“Well...” She sighs. “Todd and I were out for lunch, and everything was going fine. That was until he started flirting with the waitress in front of me.”

“What a fucking creep,” I comment.

“Tell me about it. I got pissed off and well... I growled,” she says, peeking up at me with her bright baby blues.

  “Growled? Like...”

“As in an Alpha growl,” she explains, her voice so low, so vulnerable. “There, in the middle of the café, I presented as an Alpha. Todd knew because he’s one too. He could tell, and he made it very clear that he didn’t want to be with an A lpha. A female Alpha. That Alphas should be with Omegas and because I wasn’t one, we were done. Then he got up and left,” she says, tears finding her eyes again.

I’m pissed, really fucking pissed off. Not at the fact that she presented as an Alpha. Not going to lie, that’s kind of a shock. I always assumed she would become an Omega. She’s so tiny and feisty. But I could see how she’s an Alpha. She’s very strong-willed and protective of her friends and family.

“He’s a fucking tool. Dude probably has a shrimp dick and your awesomeness intimidates his ego. You're better off without him, Ivy. Any man, any Alpha should be proud to have you. It shouldn’t matter if you're the same designation they are. Alpha, Omega, Beta, being one over the other doesn’t make anyone any less or any more than someone else.”

“When did you get so smart?” she asks, giving me a soft smile that makes my heart flutter and my dick twitch.

“I’m not some stupid kid, Ivy,” I tell her, and she frowns.

“I know. I never thought you were,” she replies, moving closer to me and snuggling into my side. I freeze. Is this real? Is she touching me?

Not wanting to miss my chance, I wrap my arm around her, pulling her closer. “When I become an Alpha, I won’t care if I have a female Alpha in my pack. If I love her, that’s all that matters.”

“Why can’t all guys be like you?” she asks.

“Here, sorry it took me so long. My mom started talking about what she’s making for supper,” Tia chatters as she walks into the room.

I’ve never wanted to tell my sister off more than I do in this moment because Ivy moves away, out of my arms, and stands up to take the bottle from Tia. “Wanna go out back for a swim?”

  “Wait!” I say, jumping up.

They both look at me funny.

“What?” Tia asks. “You can come too.”

“I got you something,” I rush out, telling Ivy. My gifts might have seemed silly before, but I think she could use something nice right now.

I run into my room and come back with everything in my arms.

“Happy Birthday, Ivy. And congratulations on being an Alpha. You're gonna kick ass, I just know it.” I smile.

Her eyes light up, and I think she’s about to cry again. “Spencer,” she breathes out. “You didn’t have to.”

“No. But you’re not just my sister's friend, you’re mine too.”

“Thank you.” She takes the flowers first and gives them a smell. “I love roses.”

“I know,” I say, biting the inside of my cheek as she gives me a curious look before taking the teddy bear. It’s blue with pink hearts and really soft. “He’s so cute! I love it, thank you.”

“And don’t forget these,” I tell her.

Her eyes light up more. “Spencer! Where did you get these? I can’t find them in any stores anymore.”

“I’m magic,” I joke, wiggling my eyebrows and loving that I can make her laugh.

We all head down to the backyard. I sit and watch Ivy talk to Tia, pretending to play on my phone. She seems to be doing a lot better than before, and I’d like to believe that I had something to do with that.

She might not be an Omega but that doesn’t make me want her any less. She’s still the same girl I’ve been in love with. I just have to bide my time before I can tell her. She’ll go to Calling Wood and find a pack with an Omega, and that’s fine because when I present as an Alpha, I’ll go to Calling Wood too and confess everything to her. I’ll make her see that we would be perfect for each other, winning over her pack and her Omega too.

It might sound like a long shot, but I’m keeping my eye on the prize. And that prize is Ivy Sinclair.

  Age 18

“Happy Birthday!” a group of shouts ring out before the room goes quiet. I groan, a pain in my belly, making me roll over onto my side.

Why am I hot? Why is my head pounding so much?

My dads let out a string of curses, and I try to open my eyes to see what’s wrong, but the lights are too bright.

“Go. I got this. We’ll talk later,” my mom says, and I hear my dads’ footsteps as they leave.

“Can I stay?” Tia asks, her voice sympathetic. Why though? What is going on?

“Of course, honey. Can you shut his curtains? The light must be hurting his eyes.”

When the light dims, I’m finally able to open my eyes.

“Why are you both looking at me like that?” I ask my mom as she looks down at me with sad eyes.

“How are you feeling, my sweet boy?” she asks me, brushing the hair off my forehead.

“I think I’m getting the flu,” I mumble. “What a way to spend my birthday.”

She looks up at Tia, both of them sharing a look that I don’t understand.

“What’s going on? Why do you two look like you're about to give me a death sentence?”

“It’s not that at all, honey. It’s something special, not something to feel like your life is over because of.”

“What is,” I whine, then frown. I don’t whine... what the fuck?!

  “Spence,” Tia says. “You presented.”

“No, I didn’t,” I retort. “How the hell would you know that? I just woke up.”

“Yes, you did. And because the room reeks of crème brûlée,” Tia tells me.

“Why? I didn’t eat anything like that,” I argue, so fucking confused right now.

“Spencer, baby. It’s your perfume,” my mom says, placing her hand on my knee.

“Perfume? I don’t have a perfume. That’s for Omegas,” I tell them, shaking my head. They both look at me with pitying eyes. “No. No! I’m not a fucking Omega! I’m going to be an Alpha.”

“I know you really wanted to be an Alpha and we’re honestly surprised you’re not. But it’s alright. Everything will be okay.”

I scramble to my feet, almost tripping over the blanket tangling around them. “No!” I shout as my ears start to ring and my heart starts to pound as I look at them like a crazy animal. “No. I’m not a fucking Omega. No. No!”

“There’s nothing wrong with being an Omega,” my sister says, sounding hurt. I don’t mean to offend either of them, but I’m losing it right now.

“This can’t be happening. No,” I say, running out of my room in nothing but my sweatpants.

“Spencer!” one of my dads shouts after me as I run down the stairs and out the front door, grabbing my car keys on my way out.

I’m in fight or flight mode, needing to get away from here to think. I shouldn’t be driving but I do anyway, peeling out of the driveway and taking off down the street.

I drive for what feels like hours. No phone, no money, no fucking shoes or shirt. Just the adrenaline coursing through my veins at the news that just fucked my whole life up.

Reality hits me hard and I have to pull over onto the side of the road. As soon as it’s in park, I break. Deep, heavy sobs shake my body as I lay my forehead against the steering wheel.

Everything is ruined. I lost her. Ivy will never be mine.

She’s already formed her pack, has been with them for years now, all bonded to a pretty little Omega named Everlee. There’s no room for me. Packs don’t have two Omegas. It’s just not something that’s done. Omegas take a lot of work and two in one pack would be a nightmare.

I lost her. My Alpha. Only, she’s not mine, is she? She never was. I was a fucking idiot for ever thinking that I stood a chance. For thinking all I needed to be was an Alpha and that would solve everything.

It’s like the universe is giving me a fuck you by making me an Omega. Hell, even as a Beta, I might have stood a chance.

I know I could find another pack, be their Omega, but I don’t want anyone else. There’s only Ivy. There will only ever be Ivy. I’d rather be alone, than spend the rest of my life being reminded that whoever I’d end up with isn’t her.

I’m not sure how long I sit here crying before I have no more tears left in me. I feel numb as I drive back to my house.

My whole family crowds me as I walk through the door, telling me how worried they are and how much they love me. But I tune them out. Going up to my room, I lay on my bed feeling like a shell of the man I once was, of the man I’ll never get to be.
