Dr. Gascon finally cleared everyone out of his office by yelling at them and telling them they were incompetent. He ordered them to search the grounds for Petre even though he knew it was a futile effort. At least this way, he could fire someone and blame them for Petre’s disappearance rather than have to admit to anyone that his patient had simply disappeared right in the middle of his office.
He stomped across his office and sat down hard on his chair. Only then did he register the unpleasant, cold wetness from inside his pant legs. He jumped up again and hastily ripped his belt off and dropped his trousers on the floor. He stepped out of them disgustedly and kicked them in a heap across the room and sat back down.
Reaching out to pick up the phone on his desk, he noticed his hand trembling and cursed out loud at his own weakness. He grabbed the phone up and began dialing his secretary when he recalled he had fired her the week before. Slamming the receiver down, he vented his anger by throwing whatever was within his reach across his office, pleased when the items broke against the farthest wall.
One of his throws came close to the place where his skull of doom had always rested. The emptiness of the shelf sobered him immediately. His last tie to his abductor was gone, and now he no longer had any proof of his childhood kidnapping. How was he supposed to get revenge on the man if he had no tie to him?
Instantly, he was a small child again, being held against his will in a dark, windowless van. A man was sitting next to him holding a strange ball of light in his hands and telling him tales designed to scare him into peeing himself. The light moved closer to his face, and he could see images of his family being tortured inside the ball and he screamed and closed his eyes.
The man punched him in the gut and told him to open his eyes and watch, or he would do something worse to him. Stephen could hardly see through the tears filling his eyes, and he was grateful for it because he would never get the blurry images out of his head. He had no way of knowing how long he had been kept, but it was long enough for him to foul his pants, mostly from fear.
“My name is Lucinden. Repeat my name, Stephen.” He held his face close to Stephen’s, staring at him directly in his one eye.
Stephen felt Lucinden’s foul breath on his cheek, and he trembled in fear. He could not force any sound to come out of his mouth. The man wrenched his arm cruelly behind his back until Stephen cried out in pain as a bone snapped. “Lucinden!”
“Very good, Stephen. I’m originally from Tuala. When the time is right, you will recall this conversation.” The sphere of light disappeared along with Lucinden, and only a shining object remained where the man had been sitting. Stephen stared at the crystal skull leering back at him, and he became enthralled. The longer he stared at the empty eye sockets, the more fascinated he became with the macabre stone. Unable to help himself, Stephen picked up the skull and put it into his pocket. Never would he tell anyone about what he had found. It was his!
Now it was gone! His despair rapidly changed to a plan of action as his memories and fear returned. He did have a tie to Lucinden, and his name was Petre MacVeen! Not only did he have one tie, he actually had four.
Shemalla had spoken of Amanda’s journey in Tuala when she was a drugged patient. Nealand had also experienced the same delusions during his questioning before he had been broken out of the facility which brought his thoughts to Amanda. She seemed to be at the heart of this whole chain of events. It was time for her to pay him a visit.
