He cleared his throat at the same time Louise spoke. “Well, we have a bit of news.”
Harriette ran to her sister and wrapped her arms around her. “I knew you were here. I could feel you.”
Louise smiled. “Of course you could, and then she glanced at Danielle’s body. But I’m here for her.”
Harriette’s shoulders slumped. “Not her. Not now.”
And that’s when Liz and Danny saw her—her ethereal form and her body. “Danielle, no.” Liz ran to her. “How?”
Black Su—I mean, Michael cleared his throat again. “As we were saying. We have some news. Danielle Knight, please step forward.”
“You are not taking her across the veil.” I ran to her side just as Danny tried to grab my arm. “I mean it. I’ll go, too.”
He and Louise only smiled. Now they were just pissing me off.
“Danielle Knight, because you have made the ultimate sacrifice, giving your life to save another, you have been granted another chance at life. Not as before, but one amongst the living.” Black Suit smiled and then sent me a sideways glance when my mouth fell open. “You are hereby… well, alive.” He waved his hand, and Louise nodded, then Danielle’s ghostly form turned corporeal. She was alive! For real alive, this time. The body on the floor disappeared. Holy crap!
I jumped up and squealed, then grabbed her until I nearly squeezed the real life out of her. “I can’t believe it. I—”
“Abigail.” I heard the voice of my father and about fell over. I turned toward the sound. He was standing near Mom. She had her arms wrapped around him… He was already an ancestor? How? “Daddy? How?”
Louise cut in. “Me. That’s sort of why I’m here. And the angels, too. We’ve only been waiting for you to release his soul from the talisman.” Her grin could light the entire attic if it wasn’t already glowing with souls.
Liz ran to him. “Daddy! I don’t know what to say. I… I love you.”
He smiled, his yellow-green eyes aglow. “I love you, too, my sweet Elizabeth.” He reached out to cup her face. “You’ve grown into such a beautiful young woman. And talented. I am very proud of you.” Sis wrapped her arms around his waist and snuggled into his chest, just as she did when she was little.
I couldn’t believe my family… my dad, Danielle, everyone was here. And I was witnessing it all. For the first time in my life, I was at a loss for words. Danny wrapped his arms around me and kissed my hair. “You did good, babe.”
“This is so surreal.” I glanced to Louise and Michael with a nod of thanks. I didn’t know what else to do. Danielle was talking to Daddy and so was Harold, while Harriette went to her sister. It was a reunion, a happy one filled with love and joy.
And Delphine was finally dead—she was gone from our lives forever.
We could start our lives anew.
