PROLOGUE
The early morning sun shone on the mirror-calm Aegean Sea, and a light breeze rustled the palms, promising another glorious day at sea. There wasn’t another person awake as Adila Saeed woke from her cabin in the servants’ quarters of the yacht, donned her maid’s uniform, and scaled the short staircase to the main service wing. Coiling her ink-black hair into a simple low bun, she made her way to the kitchen, too lost in her own head to notice the glamour and wealth that surrounded her.
Pink grapefruit. Her employer insisted on half a pink grapefruit in the morning, and he was a stickler. Ordinary grapefruit wouldn’t do. But Adila was pretty sure she’d taken the last perfect pink one from the pantry the day before. Any bruise on the surface of the grapefruit’s skin would surely be grounds for termination.
Adila gnawed on her lip as she hastened her step. She doubted that the head chef, Ramon, had been able to restock while they’d been at harbor last night. He’d been far too drunk. Her stomach lurched as she remembered the way he’d pressed up against her, caressing her backside as she’d attempted to move around him and into her quarters.
Worthless man, she thought. Worthless men, all of them. You never can trust any of them.
Sure enough, the head cook’s drunken snores seemed to echo through the halls, shaking the very walls around her. The man was gross; the Vandiveers only kept him in their employ because the Vandiveer patriarch, Franklin Vandiveer of Vandiveer Holdings, had been fond of his crème brûlée. Ramon was never up for breakfast, leaving the rest of the servants to perform his duties for him.
As she made her way into the kitchen, she could smell the French pressed coffee already percolating.
Milla. Thank goodness for her.
“Hello!” she called to her friend, who was scurrying around the table, preparing the trays. “Do we have the pink grapefruit?”
Milla looked up, her cheeks pink from exertion. “Yes, I managed to find just one at the very bottom of the bin!”
“Oh, we are blessed today then,” Adila replied, wiping a hand across her forehead. “I thought we’d be done for, for sure.”
“Yes, what are the chances Ramon will ever bring the right food for these weekend excursions?” The petite blonde asked as she poured the coffee into an elegant silver service that Adila fancied must’ve cost more than her entire year’s wages. She was lucky, though, to have this job, travelling the world on an elegant yacht. Most people in her home in Syria had it far worse, but she’d managed to escape just in time. “But it is not a problem. If I found we were out, I would’ve simply gone ashore.”
Adila stared at her, then out the porthole. Sure enough, the marina, sparkling with several yachts, could be seen, and beyond that, upon the cliffside, was the grand Vandiveer estate. “Good heavens, I thought we were asea all weekend!”
Milla shook her head. “Ramon told me we were ordered back to port.”
“But why? Is there poor weather coming?”
“Some fight between the Vandiveers.”
“About what?”
Milla simply shrugged. It was true, they’d long since given up trying to comprehend the whims and frivolous actions of their employers. Fights and tantrums were everyday occurrences.
“Well, Ramon’s drunk again,” Adila said, shaking her head. “We’d better also make sure there’s enough spirits left over this morning for all the Vandiveers.”
The young Jacob Vandiveer was the owner of this yacht. He’d come from family money and was used to being given everything on a silver platter. What he wanted, he received, and if not . . . well, Adila had seen many an unfortunate employee discarded unceremoniously at port, never to be heard from again.
“Oh, I know!” Milla said. “We might not hear it from Jacob, but we’d certainly hear it from the lush.”
Adila shushed her, then covered her mouth to keep from giggling.
“Oh, Jacob would never fire me,” Milla said with a wink. “He loves me too much.”
Adila wasn’t so sure about that. It was true that Jacob’s fiancé, Natasha, was barely ever seen without a martini class in hand, even in the morning. Milla made no secret of the fact that she disliked the fiancé, often joking about her odd behaviors. She gossiped far too much for Adila’s liking. Adila thought it was far too risky to be biting the hand that fed her. If anyone heard . . .
She pointed to the tray. “Are these ready?”
“I’m still preparing Natasha’s mimosa. You know how she likes it with fresh orange juice, and I’m still squeezing. But . . .” Milla scrutinized Jacob’s tray. If they so much as forgot a napkin, there’d be hell to pay. “Two halves pink grapefruit, biscuit, raspberry jelly, black coffee, napkin, silverware, local newspaper, and oh!” She grabbed a bud vase with a rose and set it there. “This one looks all right. Yes?”
