The Biovantic Bear
George Thomson
Illustrations
Due to the interest expressed by adult readers of The Bear The Girl And the Dog, the story has been expanded to follow Bailey right through to modern adult life. It has been designed to be able to be used for the simple pleasure of reading or to have an added dimension of personal development or group sharing. The time-honoured technique of biovantic writing has been employed. When Bailey's Daughter suddenly vanishes from her own backyard, something about the way it happens throws Bailey back into a vivid recollection of her own childhood experiences. As the reader, you will embark on a journey, with her through life, culminating in an explosion of hope and expectancy. The story has been written in true biovantic style. The author understands that many readers will not be familiar with this style of writing or its purpose. Over half a millennium before the birth of Christ, a man by the name of Aesop was born. He became one of the greatest teachers of moral values the world has ever known. His teaching lives on today because he used simple fantasy stories which appealed to children and adults alike. It is from this tradition of story telling that the biovantic method of writing has emerged. In this book the author invites the reader to allow the inner child to go back to being a nine-year-old and join Bailey and her friends in their adventure of discovery. The reader will then be able to grow with her from childhood, through puberty and eventually into adulthood.

The People of the Sea
David Thomson
Introduced by Seamus Heaney. David Thomson’s travels in the Gaelic world of the Hebrides and the west coast of Ireland brought him into contact with a people whose association with the sea and its fertile lore runs deep. They told of men rescued by seals in stormy seas, of babies suckled by seal-mothers, and of men who took seal-women for wives – stories centuries old, handed down to them by their forefathers. These mysterious and fascinating legends retain their spell-binding enchantment through the luminous quality of David Thomson’s prose. From an early age, he was fascinated by the mysterious interaction between man and the sea. In the Selkie legends he found the perfect expression of a Celtic world where truth and fiction intertwine, and his book is a window onto that vanished world. ‘The People of the Sea survives not as a period piece but as a poetic achievement . . . readers will be carried away on successive waves of pleasure . . . these stories have an irresistible...

Eric Thomson

Revenge might be cold comfort, but he would remind them once again that he was still one of the Few…
Barcelona Dreaming
Rupert Thomson
Set on the eve of the financial crash of 2008, this evocative novel is made up of three stories linked by time and place, and also by the moving, unexpected interactions of a rich cast of characters. Barcelona Dreaming is narrated, in turn, by an English woman who runs a gift shop, an alcoholic jazz pianist, and a translator tormented by unrequited love, all of whose lives will be changed forever. Underpinning the novel, and casting a long shadow, is a crime committed against a young Moroccan immigrant. Exploring themes of addiction, racism, celebrity, immigration, and self-delusion, and fueled by a longing for the unattainable and a nostalgia for what is about to be lost, Barcelona Dreaming is a love letter to one of the world’s most beautiful cities and a powerful and poignant fable for our uncertain times.

Cowboy Song
Graeme Thomson
The first biography written with the cooperation of the Lynott Estate, Cowboy Song explores the fascinating contradictions between Philip Lynott's unbridled rock star excesses and the shy, sensitive "orphan" raised in working-class Dublin. The mixed-race child of a Catholic teenager and a Guyanese stowaway, Lynott rose above daunting obstacles and wounding abandonments to lead Thin Lizzy as Ireland's first rock star.Cowboy Song analyses his unsettled childhood; musical apprenticeship; key alliances with the poets, painters, and folkies of 1960s Dublin; stardom with Thin Lizzy; and drug-induced decline. It examines the unique blend of cultural influences which informed Lynott's writing, connecting Ireland's rich reserves of music, myth, and poetry to hard rock, progressive folk, punk, soul, and new wave. The results—including the hits "Whiskey in the Jar," "The Boys Are Back in Town," and "Dancing in the Moonlight," and classic albums Jailbreak and Live and...
The Warrior's Knife
Eric Thomson
My name is Caelin Morrow, and I'm one of the most hated cops in the Rim Sector. I work for a branch of the Commonwealth Constabulary, humanity's interstellar police force, called the Professional Compliance Bureau. We're the Commonwealth government's internal affairs division and hunt down bent cops, corrupt officials, and misbehaving military personnel. My fellow Constabulary members neither like nor trust me, but that's okay. I enjoy taking out the trash. When a senior navy officer is accused of murdering an envoy from the Shrehari Empire on Aquilonia Station, a human trading post on an airless moon, everyone fears it might shatter the peace with our restive neighbor. That makes it a case for my unit because we're known by humans and Shrehari alike as the last of the incorruptibles, the ones unafraid of digging up the truth. Since I'm the chief superintendent commanding the Rim Sector PCB Detachment, I only handle...
A Dark and Dirty War
Eric Thomson
Life hasn't been easy for Siobhan Dunmoore and many of her fellow veterans since the Shrehari War ended. The Fleet's quick return to a mundane peacetime footing left them unmoored and incapable of fully readapting after years engulfed in an existential struggle. Meanwhile, the memories of all those hard-won lessons, paid for with humanity's dearest blood, are fading as careerists, bureaucrats, and politicians in uniform replace the leaders who brought about the war's end. Yet an increasing number of senior officers understand true peace is illusory. Without an external threat to unify them as a species, humans have resumed their favorite activity — fighting each other in dark and dirty wars for power, profit, or glory. And this despite the risk of eroding the Commonwealth's delicate social and political balance and triggering violent unrest. Ironically, those best suited for stopping nasty, albeit minor conflicts before they...

Imperial Echoes
Eric Thomson
The collapse of humanity’s first interstellar empire is passing into legend, perhaps even myth, now that the ones who could remember those tumultuous years have merged with the Infinite Void. Tiny Lyonesse, the self-appointed guardian of all human knowledge tucked away in its wormhole cul-de-sac, has spent generations preparing to carry out Jonas Morane’s plan of reuniting humanity.
Unbeknown to citizens of a republic cut off from the rest of the galaxy, four star systems at the former empire’s core also survived to preserve that which existed before the Great Scouring. Yet they took a darker path after witnessing firsthand the empire’s demise in a bloodletting without precedent, which left them fearful about the future of what little remained.
An uncompromising, hidebound military dictatorship, the Wyvern Hegemony is everything Lyonesse avoided becoming. Backed by a State Security Commission that uses the Void Sisters’ abilities to root out the regime’s enemies, its rule is absolute. Yet the Hegemony also harbors ambitions of reuniting humanity under its own banner, though the government has done little to advance its cause. Neither Lyonesse nor the Hegemony knows about each other. However, thanks to a twist of fate that leads State Security Colonel Crevan Torma and his assigned Void Sister on a voyage of discovery, this will soon change. But can the vanished empire’s heirs meet in peace or will they continue the civil war that almost eradicated humanity across the stars?

David Thomson

Since first publishing his landmark Biographical Dictionary of Film in 1975 (now in its sixth edition), David Thomson has been one of the most trusted authorities on all things cinema. Now, he offers his most inventive exploration of the medium yet: guiding us through each element of the viewing experience, considering the significance of everything from what we see and hear on screen - actors, shots, cuts, dialogue, music - to the specifics of how, where, and with whom we do the viewing. With customary candour and wit, Thomson delivers keen analyses of a range of films from classics such as Psycho and Citizen Kane to contemporary fare such as 12 Years a Slave and All Is Lost, revealing how to more deeply appreciate both the artistry and (yes) manipulation of film,...
