If Dragon's Mass Eve Be Cold and Clear
Ken Scholes
Science Fiction & Fantasy
The Santaman came reeking of love into this place and we did not know him . . . "There are common themes in Ken's work. Of love and faith and a world full of half-understood legends; beliefs dissolving around you. Of people, plunging forward, trying to do the right thing. Of trying to find a way forward, even if we don't really know if the Santaman will ever come again, and we aren't quite sure we believe. Of finding hope, where all was lost. If Dragon's Mass Eve Be Cold And Clear deals with all of these. It is strange and wondrous and compassionate and gorgeous, and I hope you love it, too." —from the introduction, by Tina Connolly, author of Ironskin

To Clear Away the Shadows
Part #13 of "RCN" series by David Drake
NEW ENTRY IN DAVID DRAKE'S LANDMARK RCN SERIES ADVENTURES BEYOND THE EDGE OF THE KNOWN UNIVERSE The truce between Cinnabar and the Alliance is holding, and the Republic of Cinnabar Navy is able to explore regions of the galaxy without the explorers being swept up in great power conflict. The Far Traveller is probing sponge space to open routes for Cinnabar traders--and for RCN warships if war breaks out again. But besides astrogation, the Far Traveller is to survey and catalog life forms on the worlds it touches. Harry Harper has just been posted to the Traveller. He's an RCN officer by convention, a scientist by training--and a member of one of leading aristocratic families on Cinnabar by birth. Lieutenant Rick Grenville would rather serve on a warship in the heart of battle, but peace and the whim of the Navy Board have put him on an exploration vessel instead. He finds that the dangers on the fringes of civilization are just as great as those from missiles and gunfire that he expected to face. As internal struggles cause the Alliance to relax its iron grip, regional forces are attempting to increase their own power—and they're not fussy about the means they use. Besides the biological answers that officials on Cinnabar expect the Far Traveller to find, the ship's Director of Science, Doctor Veil, has her own agenda: to learn more about the Archaic Spacefarers who roamed the universe tens of thousands of years before humans reached the stars. The crew of the Far Traveller is poised to clear more of the shadows away from the deep past than ever before in human history—if they survive. Tom Cutler
A wonderfully bittersweet, funnystrange account of living unwittingly with Asperger's syndrome. It is only after a crack-up, at the age of 55, that Tom Cutler gets the diagnosis that allows him to make sense of everything that's come before, including his weird obsessions with road-sign design, magic tricks, spinning tops, and Sherlock Holmes. The final realisation that he has Asperger's allows a light to dawn on the riddles of his life: his accidental rudeness, maladroitness, Pan Am smile, and other social impediments. But, like many with Asperger's, Tom possesses great facility with words, and this shines through this exceptionally warm, bright, and moving memoir, which is alternately strikingly revealing, laugh-out-loud funny, and achingly sad. Tom explores his eccentric behaviour from boyhood to manhood, examines the role of autism in his strange family, and investigates the scientific explanations for the condition. He recounts his anxiety and...

Here they play at being soldiers in what seems to be complete isolation. Connie Willis
Science Fiction / Fantasy
Winner of the Nebula Award
Traveling back in time, from Oxford circa 2060 into the thick of World War II, was a routine excursion for three British historians eager to study firsthand the heroism and horrors of the Dunkirk evacuation and the London Blitz. But getting marooned in war-torn 1940 England has turned Michael Davies, Merope Ward, and Polly Churchill from temporal tourists into besieged citizens struggling to survive Hitler’s devastating onslaught. And now there’s more to worry about than just getting back home: The impossibility of altering past events has always been a core belief of time-travel theory—but it may be tragically wrong. When discrepancies in the historical record begin cropping up, it suggests that one or all of the future visitors have somehow changed the past—and, ultimately, the outcome of the war. Meanwhile, in 2060 Oxford, the stranded historians’ supervisor, Mr. Dunworthy, frantically confronts the seemingly impossible task of rescuing his students—three missing needles in the haystack of history. The thrilling time-tripping adventure that began with Blackout now hurtles to its stunning resolution in All Clear.

Where the Air Is Clear
Carlos Fuentes
Fiction / Essays
My name is Ixca Cienfuegos. I was born and I live in Mexico City. Which is not so grave: in Mexico City there is never tragedy but only outrage. Thus begins Carlos Fuentes's first novel, unfolding a panorama in which many people's lives depend on the fact that they live in today's Mexico City, where the air is clear and yet filled with the old gods and devils still struggling to overcome the new, where a long and bloody revolution is still being fought and paid for in flesh. The vividness of Fuentes's characters and the country that is theirs has made many critics claim this as his best novel. It is unquestionably among the finest works of literature to be produced in the Western Hemisphere.

Upon A Midnight Clear
Kalifer Deil
On Christmas Eve, somewhere out in the Asteroid Belt, a lonely prospector happens across something he never expected to find. When an autopsy finds traces of the banned insecticide Chlordane in the anointing oil on the corpse of a local big-wig, Pittsburgh police bring Lupa Schwartz, an outspoken non-believer, into an investigation focused on a well-liked local clergyman. Worried that the police are planning to use him as a political fall-guy, Schwartz coerces Cattleya Hoskin, a magazine reporter with a connection to his family’s past, to chronicle his process and squelch any misgiving that his world-view influenced the outcome. Suspicion in the case is focused on Fr. Coneely, an outspoken euthanasia advocate who had earlier made the mistake of telling the family of the now-dead man that, hypothetically, he could safely apply poison-laden oil to their suffering father during last rites, and nobody need be the wiser. Was Mr. Hanson the willing victim of a mercy killing, or was a lapsing insurance policy the real motive for one of Hanson’s five children to taint the oil?All of the elements which are to become the unique hallmarks of the Lupa Schwartz series are birthed in this story: Schwartz’s compulsion to flatten the tires of parking rule scofflaws, Cattleya’s frustration with Schwartz’s refusal to carry a credit card or cell phone, their unspoken agreement to never discuss their shared history, and Schwartz’s fondness for comedy movies. We also meet the supporting cast who populate each of the stories: Mia, the feisty mechanic who lives in Schwartz’s large Victorian during the week to work on his car collection, but who visits her grandmother on weekends; Beverly, the cook and housekeeper who may or may not be in love with Schwartz; and Trevor Johns, the Pittsburgh police homicide detective by day, and Jazz/Blues clarinet player by night. We also meet most of the circulating cast of bit-players who appear in stories as needed: Jana, Cat’s friend at Gamut Magazine HQ; the Five Seekers, members of a discussion group Schwartz belongs to; and Victor Jenkins, a newspaper reporter.

One Clear Call I
Part #9 of "Lanny Budd" series by Upton Sinclair
Literature & Fiction
One Clear Call is the ninth in the eleven book Upton Sinclair's epic World's End Lanny Budd series. The covers the climax to World War Two in 1943 and 1944 as Lanny continues in his role as Presidential Agent 103 to FDR. Lanny uses his art expertise and connections while traveling throughout Europe and the Middle East buying masterpieces and reselling them to rich Americans. His clients in Europe include both Reichsmarschall (among a dozen or so titles) Hermann Goring and Adolph Hitler, a.k.a., Adi Schicklgruber, former picture post card artist This volume presents Lanny in the position of attempting to delude the Nazi's into where the Allied invasion is going to be. The Allies have determined Normandy as the entry point to the invasion of Germany to destroy the Third Reich. For almost twenty years Lanny has enjoyed the confidence of Hitler and for over a dozen years with Goring by posing as a Nazi sympathizer. He has been able to accomplish this through his boyhood friend, and his mother's former lover, Kurt Meissner. Meissner is thought to be a great Komponist and is close to Hitler.
However Lanny has never had much contact with the infamous Heinrich Himler, head of the dreaded Gestapo. After the many years deceiving the Nazi's, Himmler finally discovers the true purposes of Lanny's intimacies with the Nazi leadership. Lanny's half sister, Marceline, the famous dancer who has run off with a German officier, warns Lanny to get out of Germany, and fast. The ensuing struggle by Lanny to evade the Gestapo is the most dangerous of his many exploits up to this point. Using his underground resistance connections, which he has funded and nurtured for so many years, He tries escaping by car but is forced into abandoning that method and is forced to literally beg for food and sleeps in barns and in the forests. It is one of the most exciting adventures written by Upton in the entire series. His eventual (you knew he would) freedom is secured as the Allies take Italy city by city and bombing German cities relentlessly.
All of the dreams of Hitler are coming apart, day by day. There is a mutiny among the highest levels of the military to assassinate him that is tantalizing. The real German military consider Hitler an incompetent and believe (rightfully) that he has destroyed the Motherland and the hopes of the German people for decades to come. The plot is explosive and comes very close to reaching the desired end.
After D Day, Lanny is commissioned as an Honorary Captain in the US Army. He is put in charge of a large number of American art experts charged with capturing all of the art that the Nazi's have stolen over the years and returning it to the rightful owners. At this same time, the irrepressible Laurel Creston, Mrs. Lanny Budd, decides to come to Europe as a commissioned officer and writer for the military press. In addition to capturing and organizing the millions of dollars of paintings and other artwork, Lanny is asked to be an interrogator for the military. Due to his German fluency, he interviews top German prisoners including General Emil Meissner, Kurt's older brother.
And in a truly fabulous scene, Lanny and the profane General Patton have an extended conversation about taking Paris back from the Germans before going on to Germany. This chapter is a must read and one not to be forgotten.
There are so many more exciting sub plots in One Clear Call. I have loved each and every book in this epic narrative historical series; One Clear Call culminates the beginning of the end for the Nazi's and the Fascists. For each reader who has longed for the fall of Hitler and the Nazi's and the reuniting of France you will enjoy this book tremendously.

Part #1 of "All Clear" series by Connie Willis
Science Fiction / Fantasy
In her first novel since 2002, Nebula and Hugo award-winning author Connie Willis returns with a stunning, enormously entertaining novel of time travel, war, and the deeds—great and small—of ordinary people who shape history. In the hands of this acclaimed storyteller, the past and future collide—and the result is at once intriguing, elusive, and frightening. Oxford in 2060 is a chaotic place. Scores of time-traveling historians are being sent into the past, to destinations including the American Civil War and the attack on the World Trade Center. Michael Davies is prepping to go to Pearl Harbor. Merope Ward is coping with a bunch of bratty 1940 evacuees and trying to talk her thesis adviser, Mr. Dunworthy, into letting her go to VE Day. Polly Churchill’s next assignment will be as a shopgirl in the middle of London’s Blitz. And seventeen-year-old Colin Templer, who has a major crush on Polly, is determined to go to the Crusades so that he can “catch up” to her in age. But now the time-travel lab is suddenly canceling assignments for no apparent reason and switching around everyone’s schedules. And when Michael, Merope, and Polly finally get to World War II, things just get worse. For there they face air raids, blackouts, unexploded bombs, dive-bombing Stukas, rationing, shrapnel, V-1s, and two of the most incorrigible children in all of history—to say nothing of a growing feeling that not only their assignments but the war and history itself are spiraling out of control.

Carys Davies
1843. On a remote Scottish island, Ivar, the sole occupant, leads a life of quiet isolation until the day he finds a man unconscious on the beach below the cliffs. The newcomer is John Ferguson, an impoverished church minister sent to evict Ivar and turn the island into grazing land for sheep. Unaware of the stranger's intentions, Ivar takes him into his home, and in spite of the two men having no common language, a fragile bond begins to form between them. Meanwhile on the mainland, John's wife Mary anxiously awaits news of his mission.Against the rugged backdrop of this faraway spot beyond Shetland, Carys Davies's intimate drama unfolds with tension and tenderness: a touching and crystalline study of ordinary people buffeted by history and a powerful exploration of the distances and connections between us. Perfectly structured and surprising at every turn, Clear is a marvel of storytelling, an exquisite short novel by a master of the form.

Iftach Spector
A recently retired Israeli Air Force general and its second-highest-scoring fighter ace, Iftach Spector is one of Israel’s living legends. He was the leader of the flight that attacked the USS Liberty in 1967. After the 1967 and 1973 wars, in which he commanded a squadron of fighter-bombers, he rose to head the IAF’s Training and War Lessons Section and later became its the Chief of Operations. He was one of the eight Israeli pilots who attacked Saddam Hussein’s nuclear reactor at Osirik in 1981. In 2003, his career took an even more dramatic turn: he was the senior signatory of the famous “Pilots’ Letter,” in which Spector and 27 other Israeli pilots stated their refusal to bomb targets in Palestine where collateral damage would likely be severe. His maverick conscience is well on display in this artfully written memoir, which is currently a 10-week-and-counting bestseller in Israel and has been licensed in Brazil as well. The son of a family that immigrated to Palestine at the turn of the 20th century, whose father and mother served in the Palmach, Israel’s early clandestine commando force, Spector has written a rich and reflective meditation on loyalty, on what is right and wrong in war, and on his dedication to the idea and reality of the state of Israel. The Pilots’ Letter ended Spector’s military career, but also made him one of the most compelling and celebrated defenders of the conscience of the Jewish state. In that battle, as in his previous battles against Nasser’s MiGs, his mother’s constant lesson to him sustained him: “All from within.” General Spector’s first book, A DREAM IN BLACK AND AZURE (1992; never translated into English), won the Sade Literary Award, given to him personally by Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. He has a B.A. in history and Middle East Studies from Tel Aviv University and a masters in political science from UCLA, both with honors.
