For an example of an ape hiding from classification for an insane amount of years, you need look no further than the gorilla. It was considered a cryptid, or unknown and maybe non-existent creature, until 1847. In fact, there are only 4 gorilla bones in the fossil record, and those are all teeth. The Bili ape wasn’t classified until the beginning of this century. Apes are notoriously difficult to find, track, and classify.

The mountain of eyewitness sightings is hard to ignore, as well. Sure, people lie, and eyewitnesses can be sketchy in both their memories and their perception of what actually happened. But something to remember; the vast majority of eyewitnesses don’t want to tell their story. People don’t make things up solely to keep it to themselves, and thousands of accounts with information that is largely consistent is usually a sign that the truth is being told.

Really, what it boils down to is, like Fox Mulder, I want to believe. And if you don’t, that’s just fine.

  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I want to thank the many people that supported me in this endeavor. I’ve wanted to publish a book since I was twelve, and this wouldn’t have happened without the support of others.

Thank you to my parents, Bob and Pat Kummer, for encouraging me to write when I first showed an interest, even letting me use the family’s expensive electronic typewriter, even though I was so young there was a real chance I would’ve broken it (I didn’t).

Thank you to my siblings, Ryan and Kristen, for all the inspiration and support over the years.

Thank you to my in-laws, Doug and JuVene Brown, for always being there for our family and supporting us, and also reading my rough drafts and giving insightful pointers.

Also, I want to thank my kids, who are all still very young, but let me bounce my ideas off of them, and understanding when I asked them to leave the room so I could focus on writing for twenty minutes or so at a time.

And finally, thank you to my amazing wife, Rachel, who supported me in this the entire time, encouraged me when I felt stuck or down, had the courage to tell me when my ideas were bad, helped me extensively in the editing process, designed and created the cover art, and generally is always the absolute best. I don’t deserve you and I love you.
