“You’ve come,” Uncle Petyr said, grabbing his sister in a quick hug.

The man took his niece and handed her off to his wife who cuddled the child close. All the adults were trying not to cry, but Konstantin could feel their grief. Shared it with them.

“Can you get him out of here?” Mama begged.

“Only the boy. I am sorry,” Uncle Petyr said.

“It is good. he will make a good life and we will come later,” she said, nodding. “Okay Konstantin? Yes?”

“I want to stay with you,” he said, a boy’s dream.

“No, I won’t let them have you too,” Mama cred, holding him tight to her breast. “I love you son, but I need you to live. Here, there is only death waiting for you. Now go. Be strong. Be the man I know you can be. We will be together one day.”

“We go now,” Uncle Petyr said, grabbing the suitcase and taking Konstantin’s hand.

  “Mama? Mama!”

“Come now, boy. Be quiet or you will bring those monsters here.”

That fact shut him up faster than if his Uncle had slapped him. Konstantin looked one last time at his mother and sister, who’d returned to her side. He waved and nodded, biting back his own tears, then he left his Uncle’s apartment. And Russia.

  And he never looked back.

  Excerpt from Bearly Friends

The wedding reception finished around two in the morning, and Betty had about all the fun she could stand.

Always a bridesmaid, she thought with misery as she pulled on the hem of the stupid short, neon green dress she and seven other unfortunate females had to wear as part of Nancy Freehold’s wedding party. Betty did not even know why she was asked to be in the wedding, even though Nancy was technically her third cousin.

They’d gone to Barvale High together, even graduated the same year, but they hardly spoke. Betty was too much of a geek for most people. She spent her weekends watching reruns on the SYFY or talking to her houseplants.

Even her Bear was annoyed at her lack of love for adventure, but she couldn’t help it. Betty was a realist. Even if she was a Shifter, that didn’t mean she was the outdoorsy type. Quite the contrary, in fact. Give her a laptop and a Big Gulp, and Betty could entertain herself for hours.

“Hey Betty! Leaving already?” Melinda Ora, another bridesmaid, and Betty’s second cousin, was giggling up a storm as she rushed out onto the veranda overlooking the parking lot where Betty was walking.

“Yeah, I’m done,” Betty said, grinning at her. “You staying for last call?”

“Yeah, um, something like that,” Melinda replied, her attention diverted to the big male who’d stalked her outside.

“There you are, girl. I thought we were gonna dance,” a familiar voice said.

Betty froze as the big male cozied up behind Melinda, bending his wavy dark head to sniff at her neck, while he whispered something undoubtedly naughty in the female’s ear. Her heart slammed in her chest as she watched the flirty couple. She knew the Bruin well. Recognized him even before his scent drifted her way.

  Crush Martinez.

Marty to his friends, but not to her. Betty and Crush were not friends. Hell, they were barely co-workers. Sure, she knew him as long as she’d known everyone else at the wedding. But working at Lance’s Auto Repair for the last thirteen years together hadn’t brought them any closer.

“Um, later Mel,” she murmured, ignoring the laughter and smacking sounds of kisses as she walked hurriedly to her car.

Looked like a someone, make that a few someones, were getting lucky tonight, she mused tiredly.

  Sad chuff.

“I know, girl,” she told her inner Bear. “Someday we will meet our mate, but until then, it’s home to Juniper and Cheeto. We’ll water those babies, and snuggle in bed for some Firefly,” she told herself.

Betty hummed along with the radio as she drove the short distance home, making it in a record thirteen minutes. She was tired, a little sad, and a little lonely. But her house plants and a little Mal Reynolds were bound to cheer her up.

It was the perfect end to an imperfect night. She strode from the car to her small rental house, careful of the wiggly brick walkway. As she neared the door, Betty turned her eyes upward and wished on the first star she saw.

“I’m not looking for miracles. I don’t expect a big sexy Alpha to come rescue me or sweep me off my size nines. But a friend would be nice. Someone to snuggle up to and share a meal. I’m not asking for a mate. Just a friend,” she said aloud, feeling foolish almost immediately.

Some folks thought wishing on stars was foolish, especially if the wisher believed in all that hocus pocus, but stranger things had happened in Barvale. Betty went inside and closed the door, shaking her head.

She did not notice the extra bright twinkling of the stars above her cozy little house. The constellation representing a certain trio of sisters watching from the heavens as one of their own called out for a friend.

When she went to sleep that night, she could have sworn she heard a velvety soft whisper in her ear as her head hit the pillow and her heavy eyes closed.

Sweet child, wishes do come true sometimes. You just have to believe.

Wouldn’t that be nice? Betty thought as she sighed and slipped off into dreamland.
