I look at the three of them, my males. They are so very different, yet they are a powerful, handsome lot. My heart nearly pounds out of my chest in fear that they will force me to choose when I can’t.
Killian opens his mouth to speak, and my stomach clenches. I know what he will say, and I cannot--I will not choose.
A blood-curdling scream echoes outside the door, preventing Killian’s questions. We rush into the hall, and I skid to a halt at the sight of Bri kneeling over a body. Blood soaks her hands and trickles off of her fingertips. I rush to her and pull her away.
Young Caleb lies on the floor covered in blood. His face is pale, and his body shakes with tremors from the substantial blood loss. He is still breathing, but only barely.
I pass Bri to Lorcan and Killian. Blade and I lean over Caleb, taking stock of his wounds. They tore his neck open, but that’s not what is killing him--he has a bullet wound in his chest. The hole already shows signs of decaying skin and poison from the silver that is traveling through his body at a rapid pace. He will not survive.
Caleb wheezes words we can’t understand through the blood bubbling out of his mouth. Blade takes his hand and leans his ear closer. I know my eyes mirror the pain I see in Blade’s. Lorcan pulls Bri into his chest to prevent her from watching Caleb struggle.
Time is running out, and Caleb’s life energy slowly seeps from his body. He tries to speak again and chokes on the blood. I gently lift his head and cradle it in my lap.
Blood slides out of the corner of his mouth. “He’s here… killed Malachi.” He gags again, and I lift his head higher. I quickly glance at Killian to see if he heard what Caleb said. He did not.
“Outside.” Caleb rasps. “Gates.”
Blade and Lorcan make eye contact over my head, silently communicating. Lorcan releases Bri from the shelter of his arms. They both raise their heads and howl. The ground shakes; the walls crack. First Blade shifts, then Lorcan. With the speed of a whirling cyclone, they charge for the gates.
I softy sing a song pulled from the recesses of my mind--a soothing rhythm to offer comfort. I don’t think I ever heard this song, yet I know every word.
Caleb’s eyes glaze over, and his chest deflates, exhaling his final breath. Killian comes over and runs his hands over Caleb’s lifeless eyes, closing them forever. He lays a blanket over his body, then pulls me to my feet as memories of Bri and Caleb immerse me in overwhelming sadness.
A fury I have never known surges from my head to my toes, and my fingers tingle.
“He will pay. He will pay with his life.”
My voice is filled with so much rage I barely recognize it as my own.
Suddenly, paintings fall off the walls, and the floor violently shakes beneath us.
“Goddesses, hear me now.”
I turn in a circle, my arms wide. The brilliant blue rays from my amulet strikes objects with their beauty as I move.
“Hear me when I promise you, I promise all my pack, I will seek vengeance. I will destroy all of Red Blood.”
My voice rises in volume and strength. The room shimmers in glistening light.
“I will end them all.”
