Wildcard : A Westbrook Elite Standalone, page 39
I didn’t expect his past to be quite so deep and for the plot of this book to be as much as it is. I started out saying, “This is going to be an easy write. Fun. Nothing too heavy.”
Lies.
Rush brought aaalll his baggage, and I was still unpacking it all as I was writing the last couple chapters. I had pages of notes and scene ideas that were frankly wild. Honestly, a lot of credit for helping me tie it all up goes to my good friend, Amber B. I hit this woman’s inbox with more bellyaching and brain vomiting than is probably appropriate. She would bounce ideas with me so much and help me work through all the stuff scrambling my brain. The bracelet Brittney was wearing was her idea. I needed something to connect her with Cobalt and Cobalt with Brynne, and this was what she thought of. I’m very thankful for her.
Not to say this book isn’t fun. I think it would be hard not to have fun with all the Elite bros around. For real, though, it’s getting increasingly hard to rein in these boys when they are all in scenes together. There are SO many of them. And tracking them all in scenes and making sure they all get lines is frankly exhausting. And Jamie… that boy just will not stop it. Frankly, none of them will. They’re all wilding, and I’m running around behind them, trying to keep up.
Saying that, I feel friendship was a theme in this book. I really enjoyed that aspect even if I was taken a bit by surprise. I always strive for found family and friendship in my books, but these guys are on another level. I feel like friendship shined more in this book. They all got tighter. With Lars and Rush. Rush and Ryan. Rush and all of Elite. There is something really sweet about the way those guys came through for Rush and just remained loyal no matter what. Rush really needed that. And the whole kidney thing? Waaah. They really are like a big family. Even if I do find them hard to wrangle and control, I do like when they are all together.
Rush reminded me a little of Lorhaven from the GearShark series. Rough exterior, broody, intense, Corvette lover, and also insisted his girl call him by his first name. His intensity at times was a lot to write and left me mentally drained. I just wanted to get it right because I felt the different facets of his personality all had reasons, and I hope I was able to do that justice. He definitely pushed and challenged me.
The sex scenes in this book also pushed me. As a writer, I find it very difficult to write a rough male with a female because it doesn’t always go over well. I really tried to balance his volatile need for her with his love and still make it steamy.
Point-blank, I worked for this book, and I hope you all enjoy it and that it’s fitting in the Westbrook world. I want to thank you for the support of this series and these guys. I didn’t expect the series to grow as it did, but here we are, and I’m glad for it. Next up is Kruger—finally!—so let’s all hope he doesn’t give me as hard a time as Rush. LOL. Let’s face it, though. Kruger is a bit more, ah, moronic. LOL. But that’s why we love him. Who knows? He might surprise us 😉.
