She shakes her head. “Not that part, Peitho. Describe to me what happened when you helped him stand after knocking him down.”

I think about it for a few seconds before answering. “It was weird.”

  “How so?”

“When we touched it felt like a jolt of electricity went through both of us. I know he felt it too because his eyes got real big and he couldn’t get away from me fast enough.”

“You never questioned that?” Aphrodite asks me with an arched brow.

I shrug a little. “Why would I? I just assumed it happened because of who he is. He’s the most popular and liked god on the other side. I figured the jolt was my being so close to him, and maybe my being Greek and him not.”

She taps her long fingernails on the table, her eyes not leaving mine. “And since that day?”

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“When was the last time your dick got any action outside of your right hand?” she asks me bluntly.

I laugh out loud when the server, who’d walked over with the wine bottle again, trips over his feet to get away, his eyes huge, telling me he heard the last thing Aphrodite said.

Two years ago today is the answer to her question, but who’s counting?

“You might want to keep your voice down,” I tell her, chuckling. “I think you just gave the poor guy a heart attack.”

She waves a hand, dismissing him. “Answer my question, Peitho.”

“My sex life is none of your concern,” I tell her firmly. “Never has been. Never will be.”

“Two years to the day. Seven-hundred and thirty days. The last time was mere hours before you met a certain little Roman on the beach. It was the same day, actually. That just happened to be one of the years when Eros was in Vegas during Valentine’s week so Cupid was assigned to be somewhere else; that somewhere else being a beach in lower Alabama, as you’re aware. Once you met the little man, you weren’t interested in anybody else, even that sexy little twenty-something woman who offered to blow you on the sand right after Cupid bolted.”

I smile thinking back to that day. One of the most beautiful women I’ve ever, even to this day, seen in my long life, she came up to me and asked me to buy her a drink somewhere. When I smiled and said no thank you, she bluntly offered to suck my dick right there on the beach.

“She was a professional thief, by the way,” Aphrodite tells me, pulling me from my musings. “As much you thought she was wooed by your dashing good looks, she was actually wooed by the Rolex she saw on your wrist. Her plan was to get you alone, pretend she was about to give you a good time, then slide the watch off without you being the wiser. When you didn’t fall for it, she found somebody else who did.”

My smile disappears. “I assumed she just thought I was hot.”

“She did, but she thought your twenty-thousand-dollar watch was hotter. My point here is the last person you got naked with was the guy who left your condo mere hours before you saw Cupid on the beach.” She shudders. “Who in their right mind goes two years without sex? It’s not natural, Peitho.”

“I don’t need to be reminded of how long it’s been since I fucked somebody,” I hiss at her. “What I want to know is what the hell is going on with Cupid and me? And why are we being pushed together by pretty much everybody when we’re not supposed to be anywhere near each other?”

“You told your story, now it’s time for you to listen to one. When Venus created Cupid, she did it out of pure jealousy of Eros. Eros’ position was supposed to be an experiment. When it became much more, it drove that woman crazy. She and I have always despised each other. Let’s just say her hubby, that would be Mercury if you’re wondering, thought Venus’ pettiness was ridiculous. Oh, he loves Cupid dearly. He always will, but Merc and Venus were having problems - Venus never could turn down a good dick whether it belonged to her man or not - so he made it where her jealous actions toward me because of Eros would bite her in the butt in the future.” Aphrodite grins. “Though I will say the bitch did have a right to be jealous, and I’m not referring to the creation of Eros. She wasn’t the only one going outside of that marriage, if you get my meaning. Ah, Mercury. Such a thrilling, sexy man.”

  “Aphrodite.”

  “What?”

  “Get to your point, please.”

“You’re right, I’m getting off track. The future is here now, and you and Cupid, my darling Peitho, are about to blow everything out of the water. The biting the bitch in the butt will be happening any day now because much too much time has passed already. It’s infuriating Venus, something I find to be absolutely hilarious,” Aphrodite says with glee. “I do, however, worry about the little cherub when he’s forced to deal with his psychotic mother. As much as I’d like to take him in and comfort him against my bosom, I shan’t.”

“He’s not a cherub.” I lean back in my chair, taking it all in and ignoring her last statement. She definitely doesn’t mean that in a maternal way. “What’s Eros’ role in all this?”

“Even knowing it’s Cupid’s year for working Vegas in February - you know they have to alternate - he insisted on being assigned here as well. He’s watched your little man over the years, and has always felt bad for him, especially after last Valentine’s Day when he and Psyche renewed their relationship.”

“That you’d tried your damnedest to destroy before that,” I remind her. “What about the fake assignment about Kathleen Welch?”

“Like you said, fake, though Ms. Welch will find her forever human in Vegas during this trip. She actually found her a few hours ago, no arrows required.” Aphrodite smiles. “Eros has only one real assignment this week, though he’s secretly completing as many of Cupid’s as he can as a nice favor to you both.”

“Okay, what’s his assignment? And what favor?” I ask, knowing she’s building up to something.

“That assignment is you. Well, and Cupid. Getting you two together. No arrows required there either, just working out the details. And the favor applies to that.”

In all my years, I’ve never been as shocked as I am right now.

  “You’re confused.”

“You think?” I come back at her. “There’s no reason whatsoever we should be allowed to be a couple.”

“Wrong. As I said before, Mercury, ah, handsome and sexy Merc,” she says, staring off into space with a faraway look in her eyes.

“Relive your fantasy away from me, and finish your damn story,” I growl at her.

“Right, right,” she says, coming back to the present. “Mercury, as I said, thought Venus and her pettiness was silly, so he performed a little magic of his own, if you will. Considering how much the Greeks and Romans have always hated each other, what better way to piss off the Roman missus than to make it where her son, created solely to piss me off because of Eros, falls in love with a Greek god? And not just any Greek god but one I’ve personally taken an interest in for years?”

“I’ll never have sex with you, no matter how nice you pretend to be.” I lean back in my chair, my eyes on the crazy woman across the table. “So, what you’re saying is our, mine and Cupid’s, thing isn’t real? It was simply put together by Cupid’s father to piss off his wife?”

“No, that’s not at all what I’m saying. Yes, Mercury worked a little magic in the background, but had the ability to love not been there between you and Cupid, it wouldn’t have worked regardless of what he did. You saw what happened with Eros and Psyche. When they came together, it was always supposed to be for eternity, no matter how many years they ended up being separated. There was so much love between them, it was always meant for them to be together. You should also be aware that Mercury chose you specifically because he knew you would be good for his son. Trust me, Peitho, the man would die for Cupid without hesitation. What Venus refused to give him, unconditional love, Mercury always has. He’s desperate to give his son his fairy tale, the one Cupid has always wished for, including his Prince Charming. You, my old friend, are that Prince Charming.”

“Is that why everything has happened so fast between Cupid and me? Us going from wanting to just have sex to being head over heels in love?”

“Peitho, it didn’t happen fast. It’s been happening for twenty-four months. It’s only just now catching up with the two of you.” She leans back in her chair and crosses her legs, her eyes on mine. “Think about it. How do you feel when you’re not near the little Roman?”

I rub my chest above my heart, remembering the many days and nights I’ve felt like part of me was missing, being anxious and antsy, when I’d never felt that way before.

“Exactly,” Aphrodite says softly. “It’s almost made you physically ill to not be with Cupid. That, my dear friend, was your heart telling you it would never be whole until you two came together. Whether he admits it or not, it’s been the same for him since that day on the beach. He’s ached for you while at the same time pushing you away. Each time he saw you, he couldn’t get away fast enough because he didn’t understand his feelings, just as you didn’t understand yours.”

“I don’t believe in love at first sight, Aphrodite,” I tell her, not sure if I’m telling the truth or not.

She shakes her head. “It’s not love at first sight, Peitho. That love has been there between you and Cupid for centuries, slowly building up to where you two are now, though your love story didn’t officially begin until two years ago on that beach. This is no insta-love or whatever romance novels call it these days.”

“I still don’t know if I understand, but Eros and Cupid being allowed to talk to each other without repercussions now makes sense, as does my being able to spend time with Cupid.”

“Yes, but you and Cupid are to continue playing the game with my son and Venus until Valentine’s Day.” She looks around and lowers her voice. “Now, here’s the plan…”

  10 - Cupid

Eager for what I’m hoping will happen with Peit tonight, I rush through my last four assignments of the day, even managing to knock out several of tomorrow’s before coming back to the hotel. It’s barely ten, so I’m not as exhausted as I have been the past few nights. I know I should take some time to think over what happened with Eros earlier, but not now.

Now it’s all about Peit and me. Or at least I hope it is, I think to myself as I walk out of the elevator and turn toward my room. Just outside the door, I take a deep breath and use the key card to open it. When I do, I look around in awe. The light in the room is muted, with the only illumination coming from the moon outside the windows and lit candles scattered about the room. In the center of it all is a table that’s covered by a lace tablecloth. There are several covered platters and two buckets holding what appears to be only the best champagne, with crystal flutes next to it.

It’s all so… romantic. So much so it almost brings tears to my eyes.

I scan the room until I see Peitho standing a few feet away looking more nervous than I think I’ve ever seen him. He holds out a hand and I rush over to him, no longer nervous or fearing what will happen with Venus. As my arms wrap around him, the only thing I care about is this man right here.

“I can’t tell you how happy I am that you’re early,” he whispers against my hair. “Thankfully I was able to get everything together before you showed up.”

I look up at him and smile. “I was eager to get back.”

His cups my cheek with his palm, a sweet gesture that makes me feel all kinds of good inside. “Were you eager to see me, sweetheart?”

  “Yes,” I breathe.

I stand on my toes and place a soft kiss on his lips, the first one I’ve initiated. When I pull back, I look into his eyes, seeing everything I want, have ever wanted, staring right back at me.

“There’s so much I need to tell you, Cupid,” he says as he moves his hand.

“There’s so much I need to tell you too, Peit,” I say with a smile.

He turns me toward the table. “First, we’re going to have a nice dinner, drink champagne, and celebrate us.”

I turn and look up at him. “Us?”

  “Yes, sweetheart, us.”

In another romantic gesture, he pulls the chair out for me. I wait until he’s seated on the other side of the table and pouring champagne before asking what I’m dying to ask.

  “And after dinner?”

He reaches across the table and takes one of my hands in his. “After dinner, I’m going to make love to you, something I’ve wanted to do since the day we met exactly two years ago today.”

  I smile. “You remembered.”

“I did, but I was also reminded of the date by Aphrodite over dinner.”

  “Aphrodite?” I ask, frowning.

“Let’s just say the Greek goddess of love, lust, pleasure, beauty, and all the other things she takes credit for knows a lot more than any of us thought she did.”

“What exactly does she know?” I ask, not sure if I want to know the answer to that question or not.

“I’ll tell you everything… later. And then you’ll tell me what Eros said when you saw him right after your dinner with the fake date. ”

“How did you know I saw Eros after the fake date? The fake date who was an absolute moron, by the way.”

“Aphrodite told me Eros was here, and I heard. I’m sorry for putting you in that position,” Peit tells me as he uncovers the plates, revealing perfectly cooked steaks, baked potatoes, and crisp salads. He uncovers another one that has nothing but the most decadent desserts - chocolate and strawberry petit fours, mini cheesecakes, lemon squares, and… “Is that Baklava?”

“It is. One of my favorite desserts from Greece. I hope you don’t mind?” he asks me shyly.

“Of course not. Baklava is one of my favorite things in the world outside of cinnamon rolls,” I tell him with a smile.

“You’ll have your cinnamon rolls in the morning. Now, eat your dinner because I have plans for you when you’re done.”

Dinner is spent talking about about this and that, keeping the Eros and Aphrodite discussion tabled for now. When we’ve gone through a full bottle of champagne, and Peit’s spent a few minutes feeding me samples of all the desserts - talk about sweet and romantic - we both stand and come together again. Music starts playing from somewhere, and before I know what’s happening, I’m slow dancing with the man I know without a shadow of a doubt that I’ve fallen in love with. I think that ship sailed that February day in lower Alabama when he swatted me like a fly. As soon as our hands touched, I was lost. I think I’ve been lost ever since.

We slowly sway to the music, our arms wrapped tightly around each other, before we come together for a slow, sensuous kiss. By the time our mouths separate, we’re both breathing heavy. Even so, Peit refuses to rush.

“Make love to me, Peit,” I whisper.

“I want your first time to be perfect, baby.”

  “It will be. Please.”

He nods and pulls back just far enough to remove my shirt, tossing it on the dresser. I step out of my shoes so he can help me remove my socks and then my pants and underwear.

“You are the most beautiful person I’ve ever had the pleasure of looking at,” he says almost in awe as he takes me in from head to toe, stopping for a moment to give extra attention to my cock, before bringing his eyes back up to mine.

“Why am I the only one naked?” I ask him, starting to feel a little self-conscious.

He chuckles and makes quick work of getting out of his clothes. When he steps out of his underwear and kicks them off, I groan out loud at my first real look at his dick. Long and thick, there’s a large pearl of pre-cum on his slit. I’m dying to lick it off, but I stop myself, waiting to see what will happen next. You’d think I’d be nervous with it being my first time, but I’m not. I’m eager, maybe a little anxious and self-conscious over my body, but definitely not nervous.

His hands go to my ass cheeks and he squeezes before pulling me closer, so close I can feel his hard cock against me. He lifts me up so my legs can wrap around his waist. Our dicks bump and I swear I almost come just from that.

Peit carries me to bed and gently lays me down in the center of it, with him coming down with me. One of his hands goes to my hair and gently pushes it behind my ear, an intimate gesture that gives me full-on butterflies in my stomach.

“How am I the lucky bastard here with you right now?” he asks softly.

I wrap my arms around his neck. “I think I’m the lucky one.”

He shakes his head. “No. Your giving yourself to me, just me, is an honor I know I don’t deserve.”

“Why don’t you deserve it, Peit?”

  “Because you’re so damn good.”

  I arch a brow. “And you’re not?”

“Not like you. I hope someday to be worthy of this, of you.”

His leans in and gives me a slow kiss before moving his mouth to my chin, my cheek, my ear. I lift up a little and groan when he takes my earlobe between his teeth and gently bites down.

“Peit,” I moan as his mouth moves to my neck and places soft kisses there before making his way across my chest.

“Fuck,” I hiss when he takes my left nipple in his mouth and tugs, the sensation shooting straight to my dick.

“So responsive,” he whispers as he moves over to the other side and repeats the motion.

I moan as his lips abandon my nipple and gently kiss down my chest, not stopping until he reaches my happy trail.

  “Peit, please.

  “Please what, baby?”

“Just… something, anything. I’m dying here.”

  “Patience, sweetheart.”

“No. I’ve been patient for two years. You can take your time later. I want you inside me now.”

Look at me, normally shy Cupid, being all bold and demanding.

Who knew I had it in me?

Peit chuckles, but his expression changes when he sees how serious I am right now.

“I’m trying to go slow, C, so your first time will be perfect. I’ve dreamed of worshiping your body for hours at a time for so long.”
