Acknowledgments
I don’t usually include an acknowledgments section. Not because I lack people to thank, but because thanks are owed to so many people. It’s overwhelming, you know? Every time I read an author’s acknowledgment—and yes, folks, I do still read books…who knew?—I feel a stab of guilt for all the unacknowledged awesomeness I’ve experienced as an author. So, here I am, giving it a stab.
Even though I’m listing the folks below as integral to the process, I can’t stress enough that the errors contained within any story are mine. (All mine, and no one else can have them!) I say this because I don’t always follow the sound advice of others, sometimes on purpose and sometimes on accident. Shame on me, I know.
Many thanks to Arran with Editing 720 for tidying my words. If he were a housekeeper, all of my clothes would be clean and folded, the corners of my rooms cobweb free, and my floors devoid of dog-hair dust bunnies. Sadly, he’s not, so my house is terrifying. I’m not sure how he can look at the same errors over and over without going a little bonkers. He’s edited a lot of books for me, and some things just don’t stick in my busy little head. Although, now that I think about it, he may have a special bottle of booze he brings out every time I send a manuscript his way.
Big, warm thanks to Steve with Statham Communications. He takes a soft cloth and polishes up the cracks and crevices of my stories. He’s also a crazy knowledgeable car guy and will always find a car mistake. Always. (How is this possible?) And, yes, I did once try to fit a full size shovel into the minuscule trunk of a Juke. I know, I know…Steve is not only my editor but also a friend, which deserves extra thanks because I can be a pain in the arse to work with sometimes.
Thank you to Mel, my story editor, who has no social media presence, is frequently unreachable by phone, and would prefer the world not have access to her. I’m so glad to be the exception. She helps keep my characters (more) real, my stories (more) plausible, and my pacing (reasonably) swift. She also happens to be one of my oldest friends, and I’m tickled that I could drag her with me into this grand adventure of writing that I’ve undertaken. She’s also owed an extra special thanks for being my hiking buddy and listening to all of my boring writerly woes on many long hikes.
A very special thanks to author Lori Ryan, who I knew before she was Lori Ryan. Without her encouragement, I never would have attempted to write my first book, Lost Library, let alone have pursued a career in writing. She still tells me I can do it (even when that conclusion is far from foregone) and couldn’t be more supportive or encouraging of me, both in my career and otherwise.
A heartfelt thank you to the people who pick up my books and actually read them. After more than a dozen books and countless shorter works, that’s still thrilling to me. Thank you for your interest, your emails, your comments, your reviews, and all the ways that you show your support of both my work and me. Without you, I wouldn’t have the best job ever, and I never forget that.
There are a great many other people who have helped and encouraged me, but this is starting to feel like that Oscar speech—you know?—the one that never ends? So I’ll just say that there are a great many people who have helped and supported me, and without whose help I wouldn’t have been able to complete this book.
Thank you!
~Cate

About the Author
When Cate’s not tapping away at her keyboard or in deep contemplation of her next fanciful writing project, she's sweeping up hairy dust bunnies and watching British mysteries.
Cate is from Austin, Texas (where many of her stories take place) but has recently migrated north to Boise, Idaho, where soup season (her favorite time of year) lasts more than two weeks.
She's worked as an attorney, a dog trainer, and in various other positions, but writer is the hands-down winner. She's thankful readers keep reading, so she can keep writing!
