I smiled. “Hope is a blessing. It provides strength in the darkest of times.” I knew this truth as certainly as I knew I breathed.

Robert’s fingers stilled. “But Lady Marion believed me to be a hero.”

The brightness in his eyes began to fade. I grabbed both of his hands in mine. “And Mr. Mathison, Kilroy, his wife and children—they believe it too. Your actions gave them all a future together.”

Robert shook his head. “Abigail, I am not a hero.”

A warm smile spread across my face, and I returned my hand to Robert’s cheek. “That you would say so is the precise reason you are.” Robert covered my hand with his own. “Everything I’ve learned of Lady Marion is that she was not a fool. She knew of your hope. Your courage. And she chose a hero to be her heir. She chose you.”

I moved my arms around his neck and stepped closer. “I chose you too.” I pressed up on my toes, and his mouth met mine. Delicious warmth erupted down my spine as Robert’s arms tightened around me. He held me close and deepened the kiss. His hands tangled in my hair, and he trailed kisses down my neck.

Slowly he pulled back, holding my face in his hands. “When Lady Marion named me as heir to Cattersley, she brought me here, to you. And for that I shall thank her every day.”

  “As shall I.”

Robert dropped one arm to surround my waist. With the other hand he pulled my face toward him and met my lips again with his own. His kiss swirled delightful raptures with bold perfection. His kiss was home. And I was content to remain for a very, very long time.
