She’d never know his story though. He’d made himself scarce after pushing her money away. He didn’t have to leave so rudely. She had just been trying to thank him.

Huffing, Jacy looked toward the front of the plane. It certainly was full. Except for the seat beside her. She hoped her seatmate would be interesting. After her New Orleans experience, she was in the mood to meet more people, to learn about them, to exchange new stories. A whole world existed outside Maplehaven with all kinds of different and exciting people in it. She wanted to collect as many as she could.

Wiggling to a comfortable position in her seat, Jacy went back to watching out the window. The checked luggage bin was almost empty. The flight would be taking off soon and she’d be toasting and hugging her parents in congratulations before she knew it.

  “Wonderful.”

Jacy’s head snapped to the aisle at the low, raspy voice. Mr. Take-My-Ticket stood there, his body looking too big to be contained by the confines of the plane. A broody gaze studied her then roamed to the empty seat beside her.

“What are you doing here?” The question came out harsher than she’d meant.

He rubbed his forehead. “Sitting next to you apparently.”

She didn’t like the way he said you, as if she smelled bad or something. She didn’t. She sniffed quickly anyway. Just to be sure.

“I mean, how did you get a seat? They told me—repeatedly—this flight was sold out.”

“They had a last minute cancellation.”

  “And you took it?”

He held his arms out to his sides, those tattoos wonderfully on display. “I’m here, aren’t I?”

She’d been hoping for someone interesting to entertain her on the flight home. This dude definitely qualified. “Well, sit then.”

He hesitated for a moment then maneuvered his body into the seat. In the tight quarters of the row, his shoulder brushed against hers. She didn’t move away, but he leaned on the opposite arm rest, clearly looking for space between them.

“I bet we’ll be great friends by the end of this flight,” she said cheerfully.

That cold blue gaze slowly rose to meet her hazel one. “I’ve had two people die in the seats next to me on flights.”

Jacy froze for a moment. Die? “I gotta get off this plane.”

  About the Author

Christine DePetrillo can often be found hugging trees, conversing with dragonflies, and walking barefoot through sun-warmed soil. She finds joy in listening to the wind, bathing in moonlight, and breathing in the fragrances of things that bloom. If she had her way, the sky would be the only roof over her head.

Her love of nature seeps into every story she tells. As does her obsession with bearded mountain men who build, often smell like sawdust, and know how to cherish the women they love. Today she writes tales meant to make you laugh, maybe make you sweat, and definitely make you believe in the power of love.

She lives in Rhode Island and occasionally Vermont with her pack—a husband, a cat, and a big, black German Shepherd who defends her fiercely from all evils.
