“Margot, this is important.” Daryl whuffed, nudging me with his shoulder so I'd get up. He sensed it too, then.
“Hmm.” Margot narrowed her eyes, then nodded, an unspoken cue for my next line.
“This.” I turned and stood directly in front of Margot. I pointed at her, then hooked a thumb over my shoulder at the building where bands practiced their art. “What you’re doing, who you’re trying to—" I had to clear my throat and choose my next words carefully. "Connect with.”
“But of course, I know Lane Meyer and the Night Creatures are important, Nixie." She smiled. "They’re the most popular all-vampire band since the Reveal.”
“That’s not what I mean." I spread my arms out, hands splayed. She probably thought I was making with the jazz hands instead of dropping hints about how big a mess she'd gotten into. "You’re important. Your actions, what you decide to do this summer, and who you do it with.”
“That’s a nice thing to say, Nixie. But I’m okay, just thinking a little too hard. I don’t need a musical number to cheer me up.”
“You made a powerful person extremely angry, though." I crossed my arms over my chest. "By helping the Redcap and the bard, I mean.”
“That’s nothing new.” Margot grinned. “Before I got turned, I pissed off the wrong vampire. After that, Brodsky went on the warpath against me, but here I am, okay anyway. I’ll handle it like I always do, by keeping calm and carrying on.”
“I think you’ll need more than that this time, though.”
“That’s okay.” Margot gazed over my head at the old converted mill. “I know I can count on my friends, like you, Nixie. Thanks for the advice."
The wink she dropped let me know she'd gotten the hint…and that there was more to the problem she'd be facing than I could say.
