Deck of Destiny 4, page 29
We’d done it. The insane plan had actually worked. The elves were leaving.
Balaris halted in his tracks and glanced over his shoulder at me.
“Tell me, Matthew Surrey,” he said, with a cold tone that reminded me of the Arbiters, “how do you intend to escape your fate, now that you have compromised the sanctity of the Game?”
I stared at him for a long second, wondering if the Arbiters had infected the elves, instead of the other way around.
“Whatever it takes,” I said quietly.
A single, surprised chuckle rolled out of the elf. “Irisia will remain. Your people and your Guild will remain untouched. The Blue Dawn is a merciful mistress, and should she call upon you”—the elf nodded—“you should answer. Hades is so very poor a master.”
My mouth went dry as the Praetorian slid back into his mech. It took me a second to realize that I was shaking like a leaf. The dozens of beetle-like elf drones crawled out of sight and off the concrete island we’d found ourselves on. My breathing and pulse finally came back under control, and I glanced behind me. The mech that had destroyed the other side of the overpass had vanished, and four white vans pulled up at the other side of the gap that the elves had created. Roller doors opened, and twelve fully armed Arbiters piled out of the back.
Christ. I hadn’t done enough?
The back of my neck prickled like crazy as I felt a nearby rift suddenly open. Jamie let out a chuckle as he stared across the space to the Arbiters and shook his head to himself.
“Well,” he said, “we’ve really put our foot in it now.”
I shook my head. “They’re gone. Or going. We did what we had to.”
Iris appeared beside me, and her slim, small hand suddenly curled into mine.
I jolted at the contact. She’d never been affectionate with me before.
“Thank you,” she whispered in my ear.
She stood up on her tiptoes, and cool lips brushed my cheek. A bolt of crazy warmth rolled down my body as I pieced together what the hell we’d just accomplished. The elves had come for Iris, and her crazy plan for independence had vanished. Lana slid out of the back of the tray with a grin on her face, and her weapons flared into her hands. Elsie and Mayce stepped up beside me, and my fingers tightened around Iris’s.
“You’re welcome,” I told her. “How do you feel about joining a Guild?”
“Let’s see if we’ve got one left to begin with,” Lana laughed.
“You okay?” Elsie asked, concerned.
Lana whirled her mace in her hand, and that berserker grin touched the corners of her mouth.
“They took me out of the Tome,” Lana said. “The Arbiters have no hold over me.”
My eyes almost fell out of my head as the magical cops of the Game spread out along the highway. We were tired, beaten down, but we’d just accomplished something that nobody else in Millbank ever had. We’d made the elves leave. And we’d impressed Balaris enough for him to give me a job offer on the Path of Ascension with yet another stupidly powerful uber-god.
I didn’t know what the hell was about to go down after all of this.
But with a glance at the people beside me, I knew that I’d be able to take it on.
