CHAPTER 1
We were both shocked and Genesis was mad as hell. He went to the door half dressed and swung the door open wide enough for her to see me inside.
“Virginia, what the hell is your problem and why are you here?!” Genesis questioned his ex-wife very upset and loudly.
When she saw the scene in front of her, my lying on the couch and him half dressed, she became speechless. Virginia stood there with her mouth wide open and blinking her eyes as though she was having trouble focusing. Genesis questioned her again. “What the hell do you want? Why are you here?”
“Well, I said I needed to speak with you. I thought you were trying to avoid me. When I learned you left the party, I decided to take a chance and come here. I didn’t know of your company.”
“I am avoiding you Virginia! Now you have interrupted my evening. Why? You still haven’t said what the hell you want. What is so important? Why did you come over here, hammering on my door like you the law!?”
I heard her footsteps leaving the porch and Genesis slammed the door shut.
***Three Years Later***
I was kicking it with my brother, Adam. He asked me if I was ready to pop the question to Junie. I looked at him and shrugged my shoulders.
“I don't know man. I feel like she could be the one. I just want to be sure this time. I want a relationship like the one mom and dad had. The type of relationship that is going to last throughout the sex, throughout the drama, and throughout the pain and suffering. When I can no longer hear well, and she can no longer see well, we will still be there for each other. Still together once we are old, blind, and grey. You know what I'm saying man?”
“I hear you. You can't hold out based on that. All you could do is give it a chance. You both seem really good together. You just never know you might surpass mom and dad’s years. Y'all ain't trying to make any babies, are you? I know you're doing a lot of practicing, huh?” We laughed together.
“Nawh, we’re not trying to make any babies. She can't have kids anymore. She got her tubes tied when Diamond was a baby. Our kids are grown and in college. I'm not trying to start over with nasty diapers and teething or any of that type of stuff. I just want to be with her and look forward to some grandkids, in a few years. Our children get along well together and her daughter hangs with Mary's girls, Rose and Amber. They seem to get along really well too. I just want to be sure that she’s the one. She needed some time after the death of ol’boy who passed away in jail. I think I helped her with that. I just want to be sure that I'm not competing with his ghost.”
“Man, that competition is dead and gone. Y'all spent that time at the beach house in California. You ice’d her up for her birthday. Seems like she’s at your house more than she’s at her own house. Seems like every time I come over here, she’s either coming or leaving. Is she living with you now?”
“Well, I gave her a key and she has a few things here at the house out of convenience but she still stays at her own home also. Her kids are in college and working part time, so we spend a lot of time together at my house. I just want to be sure this time, or as sure as I can be.”
“Well seems like she’s sure digging you. I wouldn't wait too long bro you know how these women are. After you ice’em up and take’em on vacation, they are expecting you to pop the question next. Which in your case I think it's true, you two seem really happy together.”
“Yeah, I believe we are. She’s cool people, but I know she has some thug in her. I’ve seen a glance at it once when Sonia came over here. I saw another glance when Virginia came by unannounced. Junie and I were having a really nice dinner by candlelight. That drama messed up our whole evening.”
“Sonia! Who the hell is Sonia?” Adam questioned.
“Sonia, the chick across the street. The boys and I often dog sit for her from time to time.”
“Man, do you favor that? Are you still messing around with Virginia too?”
“Man, it ain’t like that. I have never and I do mean never touched Sonia. She just has a thing for me and she lingers around. Sometimes she will let the dog out if I’m in the front yard doing something, which is her excuse to strike up a conversation. I ain’t mad at her. I have informed her that she needs to respect my relationship with Junie. Junie can’t stand her and they had words a while back but Sonia ain’t scary and keep doing things. Virginia’s just plain stupid. I’m not going to ever give her my pleasure again after she played me like she did!”
It was time to change the subject. Junie had not spent a night with me in about two weeks. I’m definitely going to call her once Adam leaves and ask her to come over.
“While you all in my mix Adam, what's up with you and Bonnie, huh? I didn't think you liked the biker chicks. All this time I've been in the club you ain't never hollered at another female biker. You know that Bonnie and NeNe are close right?”
“Yeah man I know. Bonnie’s not in the club anymore. Yeah, she mentioned that she left shortly after NeNe left. Little mama real sweet you know what I'm saying. I like kicking it with her and she’s smart too. I don't know if I’ll ice’r up or wife’r up, but we can hang for a minute. Especially if there ain't no drama from her son’s father. He acts really immature. When I peeped his actions, I thought I better just take it a little slower with Bonnie.”
“What you mean when you peep that? Did something happen?”
“Check this! I was dropping her off one night a couple months back. We had gone to see a movie. Ol’boy was bringing their son back home and wasn't expecting to see me sitting there. He asked Bonnie, who I was. I was cool. I didn’t say anything. I wanted to see how she was going to handle it. She did all right, I guess. She told him to watch his language in front of little man and told him, I was her date. She introduced him as Geno. I just continued to relax and sat back showing him that I was not impressed or intimidated. He then nodded his head at me and told Bonnie he would call her later on in the week and left. After that, I scaled back on seeing her. We are supposed to go out tomorrow though.”
“Do you think he still hit’n that on occasion?”
“Not sure, he could be. That’s why I slowed down on seeing her to observe her actions towards me. If she were adamant about seeing me and acting all thirsty towards me, I would say no, but she’s not acting like that. When I see her tomorrow, I’m going to ask her and see what she says.”
“Do you think she will be honest?”
“Hell nawh. Do you think Junie is honest with you about everything?”
CHAPTER 2
All those dreams I had walking on the beach hand in hand with a man and never seeing his face, came true. That man turned out to be Genesis. About a year ago, he asked me to accompany him on a short vacation to Monterey, California. I agreed and we spent four wonderful nights and five days there.
We laughed and talked. We went out on the boat, swam, then danced and when I cried, he held me. We made plans about the future and went through two boxes of Magnum condoms. I also learned that since he wears a tongue ring, there was not a lot of need to incorporate additional toys, although he thoroughly enjoyed my oral activities with peppermint beads.
Once we were back from our captivating-romantic escape, we continued to grow closer in our relationship. We have been exclusive for three years now. At least, I think we are exclusive. I have been committed to only him.
All of our children have finished high school. Genesis’ children are at an HBCU, two hours away. Actually, John-John, Michael, Matthew and Jeremiah, Genesis’ youngest brother, all attend the same school. My children decided to stay home and go to a local community college to get their Associ ates Degree first and then transfer. They both are employed, with their own vehicles and doing quite well for young adults. I rarely see my children and they don’t need me around as much.
About a year ago, Genesis gave me a key to his home. I took only the bare necessities to his place, a toothbrush, my body wash, slippers and a robe. He has reserved closet space for me and often mentions the fact that I need to bring some extra clothes over. I almost took extra clothes over there once after my birthday. He surprised me with matching diamond stud earrings and a diamond tennis bracelet. We were out having dinner with my girl NeNe, her new guy friend Everett, Adam, Genesis’ brother, and his date Bonnie.
His ex-wife, Virginia, who often I wish didn't exist, seems to be coming around more often now that Genesis is interested in me. She's shown up unannounced a couple times while we were having dinner at his place. She also surprisingly came to the same restaurant with one of her girlfriends where we were already dining. Virginia is another reason I hesitate to bring clothes to his house.
There is also the situation with his neighbor, Sonia. Since his boys have gone away to college, Genesis no longer dog sits for her, but that was at my request. One day there was an issue at his job, he was called back in on some kind of emergency. That gave me an idea to surprise him with dinner and wine. When I pulled up to the house with my grocery bags, Sonia was knocking at his front door. She saw me approaching and informed me that Genesis did not appear to be home and suggested that I would need to come back later.
“You don’t suggest or tell me what I need to do! I come and go here as I please. What do you want with Genesis?” I questioned her in a sarcastic tone and looked at her as if I were going to bash her head in. Then I began to place my key in the door to let myself in.
“I...I just wanted to borrow some brown sugar,” she said looking surprised to see me entering the house.
“Really, brown sugar? Listen Sonia. I find it disrespectful that you just show up at this doorstep. Please don’t do it again. Genesis only has brown sugar for me. You know where the store is you can borrow from there.”
I entered the house, placed the bags down on the floor behind me then stood and looked at her waiting to see if she was going to say or do anything else. She just turned and walked away. I slammed the door really hard and proceeded to prepare our meal. Later that night I told Genesis about our encounter. He laughed and said next time he saw her he would let her know that we were dating, and she could not just keep showing up on his doorstep.
I know they’re still friends. I don’t think they are sleeping together but a few weeks after that incident, I pulled up at his place and Genesis was outside with her dog. He sent the dog back home once I arrived. Then Genesis said to me, “I hope it is okay to still be friends with the dog?” I just looked at him as if my stare would burn a hole in his head. I never replied.
I called Josiah, JahVay’s brother, a couple times to see how he was doing. We spoke once but the last time I tried to contact him, his phone was disconnected. A piece of me died with JahVay but Genesis has more than filled that void in my life. I often wonder how our relationship would be if he were still alive. I have definitely moved on and it feels good. Genesis has been patient, kind and so sweet. His ex-wife was a fool to cheat on him. He's the type of man that will place you on his back and carry you around. I hope that he will always be that man for me. He’s not balling out of control but I’m pretty sure he is financially stable with an established retirement plan. He is definitely well endowed in many ways.
I purchased three whole life insurance policies with the money I made while hustling with JahVay. The two for my children are one hundred thousand dollars each and mine is worth a quarter million. We are beneficiaries on each other’s policies. If anything happens to me, they are set financially. I will be paying my home off this year. I have been making extra payments on the loan’s principal balance. I didn’t want to attract to much attention while making payments on the loan. I still have about 60 thousand dollars cash sitting inside a bag of unused Kotex maxi pads. I know no one will look there for anything. Since I can’t deposit the money, I placed the bag in the far corner of my closet behind old shoe boxes. I use my regular pay checks to pay bills. With the kids grown and working they don’t need money from me. Maybe once they are ready to transfer to a university, I can help them pay for their education and they won’t need to take out any student loans and get into debt.
CHAPTER 3
Everett and I have been seeing each other now for a little over a year. Since Fred pops up at my job from time to time, I am thinking about getting a restraining order on him. I don't want him to interfere in my relationship with Everett, which seems to be going well so far. I have not had any drama with Everett like I had with Fred. Everett has more drama with me because of Fred's stupidity and jealousy. I would like our relationship to go to the next level but I have not met his parents or any of his family. I can’t help but wonder if it has anything to do with my previous involvement with Fred. I have assured Everett that I no longer have anything to do with Fred. I’m not sure he believes me.
We had been dating about two months when we were leaving the movie theater one Friday night. I heard a man’s voice calling my name. I ignored it on the pretense that it was Fred. Then Everett heard my name being called, he stopped walking and turned around.
“NeNe, don’t you hear that? Someone’s calling your name.”
“No, silly. I don’t hear anything. Come on let’s go,” I insisted.
Before we could turn around to continue walking, I saw Fred moving people out of the way so he could get to me, while calling my name.
“NeNe, baby. I thought that was you. How are you? I miss you,” Fred was trying to grab me to pull me close to him.
“Fred, what’s wrong with you? What do you want?” I said while backing up.
“What’s the problem here?” Everett spoke up and questioned.
“Nothing baby. Fred must have forgotten I told him I was seeing someone,” I spoke up, trying to defuse the situation.
Everett stepped between Fred and me and just stood there. He didn’t say anything.
“NeNe, I’m sorry. I just want to talk to you. Look man, I didn’t know she was with you. I just saw her and wanted to speak with her,” Fred stated.
I stepped aside from behind Everett and told Fred that we had nothing left to discuss. I pulled Everett by the elbow and guided him away. Everett was full of frustration and questions as we rode back to my place that night. I told him about my years of involvement with Fred. How it ended bitterly with my car being damaged, and Fred being in the hospital from getting hit with the same baseball bat that damaged my car. Everett didn’t say a word while I explained everything. The original plan before we saw Fred was for him to spend the night with me, instead he walked me to the door kissed me goodnight on my cheek and told me he would call me the next day.
Everett called me the next day as he said. He asked me a few questions about Fred and told me he does not want to be placed in that type of situation again. I understood and agreed. I told Everett that I may need to get a restraining order against Fred. Fred might show up at my job or home unexpectedly and sometimes I feel he may be following me. Everett told me I should have done that already and that he wanted to see proof of the order once I had placed it.
I haven’t gotten the order yet. I am considering a district manager position. I cannot have Fred lingering around like a skeleton in my closet busting out whenever he feels like it. Everett followed up with me a few weeks ago, requesting to see proof of the restraining order. When I told him, I had not gotten it yet, Everett wanted to know why not. I did not have an answer for him. I know I need to handle my business and get the order served.
Subconsciously, I have not gotten the restraining order on Fred because I know Virginia will see the paperwork being filed and say something to Fred. Genesis’ ex-wife is a jealous, bitter, materialistic snake who thinks she is better than everyone. I never liked her after I learned how she played Genesis, which is what led to their divorce. I never told Junie that she was the clerk who handled my paperwork when I was in court on account of ol’girl bashing in my car. I didn’t want her questioning me about Virginia. If Virginia knew Junie and I were friends, she probably would have lost some of my paperwork. I can’t say for sure but she’s grimy that way. It just bothers me that she will know and can intercept the paperwork if she wants to.
