Chapter 1
Valush and Cathory jumped into the corridor, the ceiling overlooking us. The oval shape was as high as the carvings imitated. They shot ahead I ran up to them. Behind Cathory the light gleaned off the silver-plating on her shoulders. I shudder as she stopped. Only to see the door swing open, two big monstrous soldiers with the face of wolves, carrying hammers the size of my whole body were in their employ.
“Golden Blaze, you dare attack Heralds of Sin, you blasted little children! I will...Arggh!”
The force sent straight into his face having him heaving and tipping over.
“You talk too much.” Cathory utters.
His fellow comrade pushed him into the wall as he lunged at us.
“Damn!” Cathory shouts as she whispers out of earshot, a gleam of light appears before the hammer hits. A rainbow of reflected light sundering from the centre, I cast under the shaking, sending shivers up my spine.
Breathing out, I stand firm whispering the words my soul understands fully as the magic of Shadows. I have to support Cathory and Valush. I cannot be just helping out, with a flick of my hand I prepare the spell.
“Luster Spade!” Valush’s voice, my body becomes numb, I nearly lose my footing. I could see the bones of Cathory’s big bull like body and the wolf’s massive bone frame, sparks of light cascaded around me. I shake my head… I need to focus. If I don’t I will be trapped in this state.
Eyes open, the blurs became firmer. When I can focus again I see Cathory against the wall looking distantly, she shot her eyes back at us.
Thin strains of lighting shooting past me hitting the Lupine soldier, it was Valush.
Cathory shouts, “Valush, what the hell? You had to use that spell and drag me into it.”
“You have the blood mark, reap off the damage.” Valush retorts with no smile on her face.
Cathory’s face gets darker, “Vanessa, you are a slithering little…”
“Celina will heal you later, go cast your fire!”
“Nooo!” that was distant.
“What was that?” I ask frightened.
One point of Cathory’s finger, “look Celina.”
Earvak comes through the corridor, as the Lupine Soldier falls behind him. Earvak moved quick, sword in hand, one swing into the back of the other has the wolf swinging the hammer upward. Earvak avoids. Stepping back they duel and parry with confused haste.
“Fire, come forth and make your presence known, make your presence only you alone.” Cathory speaks fluently and menacingly.
The place fell into darkness, what light peeking through the windowsills slowly glowed as a fire burned behind the Wolf soldier, him and Earvak frozen as the spell lit the corridor.
The Lupine soldier looked behind him only to see a vast ball of fire behind him. Held in Cathory’s brown right hand his shoulders slumped as he probably considered himself the unluckiest man here.
“Oh come on!” he laments.
“Oh shut up!” Cathory says with disdain.
The fire hits him, engulfing half his body. Earvak takes the chance slicing the beast numerous times in quick succession, one kick and an overarching swing slices through him, his body dissipates as the wolf’s roar emanates distantly.
We all stood there for a bit, not breathing we just looked at each other and down at where he was killed.
“That was a good practice exercise.”
Valush steps away, all our eyes follow her. Hands behind her back, her hair a shiny blond, her ears pointy, her provocative dress with its speck of leather shielding was sexier than it was safer. She stopped looked around and ogled us like we were mad.
“What are you standing there for, come on, we have to get back to Fiona, chop, chop!”
Chapter 2
“Celine…”
“Mhm?”
“Celina!”
“Oh…”
A crackling slight opening, the specter of light came onto me. Blurring into existence, my mother’s face, her white face with its bluish eyes, it was reminiscent of the water in the pit of darkness. I lift myself as her body retreated somewhat.
Focus, the room became settled in its dark green allure, computer to the left, and typical wooden furniture to the right.
Mother stood up straight in a white t-shirt and long red skirt and we exchanged a tender and odd look that resembled some amount of acknowledgment.
“It is seven.” She says
I sigh. The school bus was gone then, perfect.
“I will take a taxi.” Saying this as I scratch the inside of my hair, whether Mother understood what I meant or cared was not my concern.
“Celina you are waking up too late. I know it is that game.”
“What game Mom? I did not even play it last night, I had homework to do.” Actually I was telling the truth, I played it in the early morning hours of one o’clock.
“Good, you remember your father’s warning?”
I nod reluctantly.
“Good, try to remember, he does not want you to come out of school with nothing.”
The thing about that line of thinking was forty years ago; it was Two Thousand and Sixty for the sake of God. The idea of school was dying these days, especially since it was so expensive for private institutions. My father could work a lifetime and really only be able to pay one year’s tuition for me.
The rest would be a mystery. I was fifteen and personally I should be doing better, with so many kids my age making money online it was high time I think of preparing myself. Golden Blaze was making a boatload of money since we have the highest and most proficient healing magic users. I still get my cut from the raids our members do but it does not help much since it is the in-game gold.
I can convert it to real money in online markets where players will buy it from me but the conversion is pretty low. I would be better off selling digital objects and mods in the game. That would fetch me a lot of money, I think Earvak has friends doing some of that, I should ask him.
It would be good for me. Last thing I wanted was my father holding the debt he would spend for my education over my head.
I would rather live on the street.
“You know being a fool does not sound so bad. There are many fools who are rich.”
My mother frowns as the blue in her eyes gets darker.
“Little girl…” I hate when she calls me that. “You have a chance to be better than that, why settle for less, why be given a life when you can make your own?”
Ok let me stop this here, I knew this was going to end in a bitter argument.
“Can I get ready Mom?”
She opened her mouth but closed it slowly as she finally nodded.
Sliding off the left side of my bed, I ogle the wardrobe with outbound boredom as my receipt.
I throw my clothes off in a flurry and proceeded to grab my school uniform. I bathed some hours prior I should still be clean enough anyways. Turning I catch my mother slipping out the door to my room only to see Wata’s face trying to poke through. Her head was jerked back suddenly. The door shut, the thought of Wata, my sister still being here was strange, was she not going to school today? I shook myself out of my deep state and continued the morning ritual.
Minutes later I layered the blue vest over my chunky frame hugged by the white button up shirt, the short beige skirt was tight against my hips, too tight. I winced as the pain pinched deep from the top of my skin. I grimaced as I consider the possible options to solve my predicament… I need to exercise more.
But I barely had time for such things, with school, home duties alongside my time in Everscape, I was only destined to get fatter. It was funny I was the spitting image of my mother after all, my eyes were of a lighter shade of blue, my hair was unkempt and wild. Hard to settle, I had to use certain creams to smooth it down.
My plush white skin a reminder of the blandness of my life, still my mother was able to stay thin. She ate a lot, she had at least five cartons of ice cream that I could not touch, and she consumes them with much satisfaction to her sweet tooth.
I barely ate and still I was getting fatter. Well, I was not round like a donut but my belly was developing a rather large slump right now.
Leaving the room, I was in no hurry, made little sense running to get a detention. Wata was at the dining room table as my mother took out a covered plate from the fridge. Wata’s face was flushed, eyes closed as her head held the table top for dear life.
“What is wrong with you?” I ask Wata, only to get a grunt.
“She is sick, you want something to eat before you go?” My mother interjects.
“Sooooo, no breakfast was made?” I ask cautiously.
“I was busy.” She answers flatly.
Yet she asks me now. Good thing I did not wake up until now, I was not feeling hungry but I would regret it later if I took none now.
“Anything to eat while I am on my way?”
Mother blinked, with a swift turn she took out a long wrapped bar. She pushed it into the microwave and placed it on five minutes.
Within that time, I get more groans from Wata and flaccid smiles from my mother by the time I reach outside I was relaxed to just be outside feeling the breeze. This was good, I liked this, just the cool breeze of the morning to carry me through, I devour the bristle bar of meat and fruits mashed together.
It was twenty-five minutes past seven, the taxi was taking its sweet time.
Swept up in the flow of a strong wind, I stood tall in front of Polishwood High. The gate, semi-round, it was the height of my house. Beyond that, a short strip of lawn leading up to the brown outer wall of the school. Like a tall brick toy set, each section, turned shapely fitting against each other well. Resolving into a five-story square, inside was the school holding four thousand students.
Nobody around, I walk with my feet firmly fixed to the ground, the guards took my name and inspected my ID. Opening the gate towards me I stepped onto the path. The lawn short and overgrown with trees, they were slender and bustling with leaves. Only one tree was huge, standing to the left of the school building, the sports field just beyond that.
From the narrow walkway to the inside, I ran into a teacher who gave me a series of glares. It would matter little I was already in trouble. Whether I see the dean now or later it would not mean much. I found my way and decided to knock on the door.
“Come in Celina!”
Great, guess I was the only one late then. I open the door to my classroom to an uproar of snickers.
“Class quiet down.” Mr. Morlin says as he waves his hand toward me gesturing me forward. Closing the door, I walked slowly. His face was stern even as he looked more than playful in his black bowtie, white shirt, and black pants. The shoes tapping ever so slightly to remind me I was not dreaming.
“You want to explain why you are late Miss Alison?”
Should I? Corner of my eye I see Vanessa waving at me, next to her Fiona with black extensions in her hair, her dark scorching eyes peering my way with a smile. I could only smile because everything was great where I was concerned, so why should I worry? I may not have much of a life in the real world but in the world of Everscape-- the popular video game, I was the founder of one of the biggest kingdoms in the game.
Actually I could get expelled now and it would not matter. Maybe I should test that theory.
“I overslept because I was playing video games.”
The man threw his head back in an exaggerative fashion. More laughter, I more cautiously admit, “After I finished your homework.”
The man raises his hand for a moment, mouth open but it twisted as he lets his arm fall.
“Go sit down and bring out that homework you finished.” Stressing the last part of his assertions I merely nod and run to my seat. Vanessa elbows me shooting me a glance with a tense smirk on her face. She must have thought I was mad, well that might be true.
Fiona and Vanessa by my side, whether in the game or anywhere else life was better with them. So I could be mad once in a while as long as it was with them.
Chapter 3
“You owe me.”
“No I do not.”
A chest filled with goods, its bottom endless. It afforded me a space that I wish I had in real life.
“Hey, you see…”
I took up my Howl Bane wand, it was the size of my upper body, it was slim and had thick rings at each end, as the center was the slimmest part of the rod. This rod was a masterpiece version of equipment I brought with much relish now that I have reached this high in proficiency in using magic.
I was a Godly level Black Mage. Godly was the highest rank afforded to any Prestige class. So I was a pretty powerful Mage in the black magic arts.
I preferred the equipment I was using when I was going into the jungles. Which was where we had to go and do a team based quest. I wonder if I should use that wand? Taking it out of my chest, it was made of wood, big and bulky at the head but had a tapered end.
Earvak gave this to me. The Heavenly Seal Staff it was called. I twist my lips as I look at it. It was worthless, I checked this wand using my identify skill only to get the description showing itself as ‘a wand that once belonged to a god’.
Either way the stats were terrible, it did not give me magical buffs it actually made me worse at magic. The stats it added to a player wielding it were negative. This was normal among heavy or cursed weapons but this was the first weapon that I had that was this badly nerfed or debilitating to a player.
Fiona was greatly interested in it and said she would seek some information on it for me and told me to keep it. Thing was I could not really sell it. When I do, non-player stores deem it as unsellable, plus any actual player would never want such a bad item. I think the reason why non-player or NPC stores did not buy it was probably because it might be a story item. Which are important items essential to advancing the game's story.
