Acknowledgments
My Husband – For years, he’s worked himself to death to give our family everything we needed or wanted. He encourages me every day to follow my dreams just like he did the day he told me to take the chance. He’s my best friend, and I wouldn’t know what to do without him. Or the fact he listens to my non-stop rambling or my need to have a notepad with me in case I need to write something down that pops into my head.
My Three Kiddos – Every day, I watch them grow up into little people who want to take over the world. Well, in their own way, that is. They are inspirations all by themselves. They love to find out what I’m working on and give me ideas. One of my favorite things is to ask them what I should have someone do or how they should act. Some of their ideas are wicked.
My Alphas – You guys rock big time! Thank you all for being the first to read the stories as they come alive. It means the world to me. Especially when you all start to get mad. That’s when I know I’m doing something right. And in doing so, pushing me to keep going with all the different plots that form in my head. I’m thankful to you all for being ready and willing to read and give your input.
My Knox Publishing People – Thank you guys for being such great people to work with.
Liz – My sister from another mister, my best friend, and Publisher/Boss/Co-Writer extraordinaire. You’re my go-to when I need it. I love working with you on all that we do. No matter how much chaos we go through to get it done.
Diane – If not for this woman, I swear I would lose my head. She sets me straight when I don’t know which way to look. Thank you for everything you do in being the best PA I could ask for. However, you’re also one amazing friend.
My Editing/Plotting Team – Thank you all for working with me. I truly do enjoy working alongside you all as I bring each and every book to life. I don’t know what I would do without each and every one of you to help me when I need it most.

Nightmare in the Night
There’s a chill in the air
A bump goes in the night
Howling on the wind
Nightmares screaming in my ear
Nothing comes without a price
Not even escaping the pain
There’s always something to come after
The night will not come without the nightmare
Following in the darkness, the hand will grab hold of you
Try as you might
You’ll never get away
Not unless you find away
End the pain
Without paying the price
It’s the only way
Rid the night of the horrors
The chill in the air sends shivers of fear
A bump in the night makes me jump
Howling on the wind causes me to shake
My nightmares filling the night scream in my ear
Nothing comes without a price
Not even now when I thought they were over
They all come with a price.

Prologue
Brielle
Watching everything unfold with Tyres and Rissa makes my chest ache for them. They lost so much time together. Time they could have been together. Then again, Tyres wouldn’t have Wren—his little girl who means the world to him.
Today, Tyres and Rissa finally tied the knot. Okay, so they had the celebration and ceremony. They got married the day after Tyres took out the sick couple who raped and killed women.
Earlier this morning, before the ceremony, Rissa confided in me she’s pregnant and nervous about telling Tyres. I explained to her that her man wasn’t going to have a problem with her giving him another child. I told her that he might have thought he didn’t want kids before Wren and refused to think about having any of his own. But I know from my ol’ man, Ryder, it’s because Tyres didn’t have the one woman he wanted to have a family with.
Now he does.
I’m proud of how much he loves both Wren and Ike. They’re his kids. Sure, he was pissed that he’d missed out on seeing his son grow up to be the boy he is now.
Shoot, Ike, Marcus, and Micah are best friends, alongside Carson. The four of them might have a little bit of an age gap between them, but it doesn’t matter. Those four even bring River and Owen along for whatever it is they’re getting up to.
The club’s filling up with a lot of little ones lately, and there’s even more to come. My daughter squirms in my arms, wanting to get down so she can play. But I’m not ready to let her go.
Not yet, at least.
Glancing around the yard, I take in everyone’s faces. I want to remember them all. They have so much happiness surrounding them and don’t need the nightmare that’s coming this way. I won’t let anyone come close to harming my family.
A loud squeal of laughter peels across the yard, and I shift my focus there. Right away, I know Rissa has told Tyres about her being pregnant.
Good.
My eyes leave them and turn toward Ryder to see him staring at me. I smile, not wanting him to continue on.
I can’t.
If he does, he’ll stop me and demand to do this for me. But this isn’t something he can help me with. Not even my brother can help me with this coming nightmare.
I’ve sent a call to my best friend Fawn out in Alabama and told her what’s going on. She’s agreed to help me, and that’s the only person I need on this. It’s why I’m going to mail her a package with everything I’ll need for my plan. I won’t allow anyone else to help me—not the Inferno’s Clutch, Devil’s Riot MC, or the Toxic Warriors MC.
I’ll enjoy the rest of this day with my family, but come tomorrow, I’ll head out. I won’t let that monster come here.
There’s one thing from my past I didn’t tell Ryder or my brother. Whip didn’t need to know what it was truly like after he left—especially now that he’s finally happy with a woman who’s wonderful for him.
I never told Ryder because I knew he’d seek vengeance on my behalf, but I don’t feel like having the father of our children sitting in the penitentiary.
No, I’ll do this on my own. She’s my problem, my nightmare, and I won’t allow any of them to be subjected to the havoc she’ll cause.
My mother will not hurt anyone else again.
They all thought I was with Titus because I wanted to be with him.
No. I never really wanted to be with him. At the time, I’d been too blind with gratitude to see the truth—Titus was just like her. Being with Ryder, I know the difference between what I want and what the truth of the past is.
Sylvie Heroux will not be allowed to torment anyone else again. She’s done enough in the past, and I won’t let her traumatize my children like she did me. Sylvie married Whip’s and my father, gave us his last name, but kept her maiden name for herself. What my brother doesn’t know is our father never left. Sylvie killed him when he threatened to take us away from her. She lived off his life insurance policy. One that was well over a million dollars, and she never once shared it with us. The woman would have preferred we starve to death than give us anything we needed. We were lucky to get scraps.
Our mother is the reason my brother left me and why my life turned from bad to living in hell for years.
She’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing, and now she’s coming after me.
I’ll never leave anyone else to suffer the nightmare known as my mother.
Age 16
“Bryan, I’m okay. I promise,” I tell him over the phone.
My brother left nearly a year ago for basic training after joining the military, leaving me behind. I get why he did it, and I don’t hold it against him.
He’s finally out of this hellhole. It was never like this with him here. Now it’s a hundred times worse.
“Are you sure?” Bryan asks. “Remember, use that card when you need to. That money’s in there for you to get food and clothes.” It’s not the first time he’s told me this. He tells me at least once a week. I’ve barely touched it, though. I don’t want Mother to know about it. If she finds out, she’ll take every last dime in the account. That money is my brother’s, and I’m not gonna let her take what’s not hers.
“I know, Bry, I will. You know I don’t need much.” This is very true. I can live on little to nothing.
“Yeah, just remember to do as I ask. We leave in a week,” he announces, reminding me of the fact I won’t see him any time soon. I honestly haven’t seen him since he left for basic training. I don’t want him coming back here. He doesn’t need to see the hell I’ve been dealing with.
“Be safe, please,” I whisper, doing my best to keep from crying.
“I will, Mini. I promise you. I’ll call when I can. I gotta go now, though. Keep your phone close. I’ll call before we ship out. Love you, Brielle.”
“Love you, too, Bryan. You’re my hero,” I mutter before hanging up and letting the tears finally slip down my cheeks.
My breathing hitches and I curl into a ball on the floor in what I call my room. A room that’s become nothing but a prison.
“Brielle, get up. I’ve got someone I want you to meet,” my mother calls from the other side of the door.
Sighing, I stand up and wipe the tears from my face. I take a breath as I step over to the door. I twist the knob, removing the only barrier between my mother and me.
I meet my mother’s gaze, bracing for what’s to come. She doesn’t leave me waiting long. The slap comes quickly, stinging my face. “You’ll be out of my hair from now on,” she sneers and grips my upper arm, dragging me down the hallway into the living room and into the arms of a man I’ve never seen before. “You know the business arrangement. Make sure it sticks.”
What?
“Don’t worry, you’ll have it. But Brielle is mine now,” the man says, pulling me into his side holding me tightly.
“Be sure that I do, Titus,” my mother says, “or I’ll make sure life is hell for anyone involved.”
I don’t know what they’re talking about. What I do understand is this man, Titus, is saving me from my living nightmare.
Sighing, I inwardly shake my head. I don’t want to think about Sylvie or Titus. It’s bad enough I allowed Titus to fool me into thinking he cared for me to begin with.
Now Sylvie’s somehow found out about my daughter, and she’s demanding I give her over. I refuse to do it. I’ll throw myself back into the pits of hell before subjecting Lucy to such horrors. She’ll never know the pain I endured at the hands of my own mother.
My boys won’t, either. It’s bad enough they had to suffer alongside me, thanks to their biological father and his family. They’ll understand my leaving to save their sister, even if it hurts them as much as it’s gonna hurt me to leave them.
I suck in a harsh breath, needing to calm down before I have a breakdown here and now over the thought of losing my family. But I know it’s the right thing to do. I’ll do whatever it takes to protect the ones I love.
This is my nightmare, and I’ll be damned if I let them suffer because of me.
