  CHAPTER 1

  CHELSEA

My life has always been one filled with headaches. Mostly because my brother and cousin try to dictate it every chance they get. The moment I graduated from high school, I knew I needed to get away from them. I started this by moving out and into a rental that my best friend and I were going to share. This was going to be great, yet at the same time challenging.

Storm, my best friend, was going through some things of her own and needed a place to stay. So, she came to Colorado in order to get away from her home.

Together we’ve always been known as the troublesome duo. Anytime we’re together we’ve made the best of it by screwing with those around us. Mostly the members of the Devil’s Riot MC.

See. Storm’s dad is a member of the Tennessee Charter, and her brother is in the Originals Charter. My cousin, Grinder, is the president of the Colorado Charter, and Driver, my brother, is the Sergeant at Arms. To say growing up with these men around hasn’t been easy is an understatement. We each took it upon ourselves to cause our own havoc. I guess you can say it’s our favorite pastime.

We’ve done everything from putting super glue in lube bottles to hair removal in the clubwhores’ shampoo—now that was hilarious. T he things we’ve done are always pretty animated.

My favorite would have to be the ones I’ve done lately. That is after I moved to Tennessee to be close to my best friend. Where she was supposed to move in with me—which she did—things happened and ended up working out for the best for her. So, her man talked to Grinder, yeah, my cousin instead of me. The two finagled me into moving—not that I would have argued, it got me away from their overprotective ways.

Anyway, the pranks that I’ve been doing here have been the funniest I’ve ever done, and the person targeted is always the same.

  Lucky.

The reason for this is because he seriously pissed me off and hurt me all at the same time. So, I guess you can say this is payback. Not that anyone else knows about what happened but the two of us and that’s the way it’s going to stay.

No way in hell will I let anyone find out about the most humiliating moment of my life. If they did, I’d have to deal with not only the questions, but what I’m sure will be pity in their eyes. I don’t need that. For that matter, I don’t need anyone. Not really. Sure, I love having my best friend around and the others I’ve become close with since moving here.

But I’ve got my own life to live.

During things with Storm and Blow, they hired me to manage the real estate company Storm inherited but signed over to the club. She didn’t want any part of it, so I took over the position and I love what I do.

While working, I also found her biological dad’s journals. I started reading them. He was definitely into some weird ass shit. I guess you can say the more I read, the more I became obsessed with everything that’s been going on with the club. Like the fact, Nines was being framed for something he didn’t do.

That’s when I came up with an idea, no matter how stupid it was. I told Meadow I was going away for a few days. There are a few reasons for this. One, getting away from Lucky and his demands of what the hell I’m up to. Two, looking deeper into what I’ve been reading about the Crimson Blood Clan—they’re the ones causing problems for the club. The way I see it is, if I can figure out a way to infiltrate or get the information the club needs, it’ll all be worth it. Even if they get pissed at me when they all finally find out what I’m doing.

What I didn’t expect was the phone call that came in from Driver about our mom having a heart attack. I’d only just left the clubhouse after telling Meadow I was heading out. Finding out about my mom having a heart attack pushed all my plans to the side, and I hauled my tail back to Colorado. I didn’t call and tell Storm about it. She would have told Blow, and then the others would have found out.

This is something I didn’t want to happen ‘cause I knew Lucky would then take the chance to dive further into my business. Again, I didn’t want that to happen.

The first time I saw Lucky was a few years ago. At first sight of him and that cocky smirk of his, I fell hard. Then, when he came with Blow to reclaim his woman, I ended up spending a night with him. One I regret with all my heart, not because it wasn’t memorable—it was—but due to the aftermath and the blow Lucky ensued.

See, we’d been at the clubhouse having a good time. I needed to run an errand, and he offered to help. Somewhere along the way, we started having a good time . . . a great time . . . that ended up with us joking around. We ended up doing something stupid—we got hitched—I blame it on the booze we’d been drinking. The next morning, I woke up to him sitting on the side of the bed, telling me that what we did was fucked and we had to rectify it. It didn’t dawn on me at first. I was still waking up and hadn’t had an ounce of coffee yet, so my head was still kind of fuzzy. Then I realized what he was talking about, and my heart hurt. He told me he’d take care of it and send the papers.

These papers I still have and have yet to sign. Why? Because I love tormenting myself, I suppose.

Now, here I am, sitting next to my mom in the hospital, fear threatening to choke me. I haven’t been overly close with her, but she’s still my mom, and I didn’t want to lose her. She was a great mom. I’d just been a daddy’s girl before he died a few years ago from a massive heart attack. It’s why her being here is freaking me out.

I refused to take any comfort in those around me. Meaning my brother and cousin were both watching me with eagle eyes. Not letting me out of their sights, which sucks because I could use a moment alone with my mom. Maybe then I could unload onto her what’s been going on. She might not be awake to listen, but I could at least talk to her.

“Chelsea, you want something to drink?” Driver asks quietly.

“Yeah.” I nod, clearing my throat and standing. “I’ll go get it though. I could use some air.”

“Okay,” he grunts and jerks his chin in the way he’s done since I could remember. “Can you get me a Dew?”

I roll my eyes and nod. “Yeah, I’ll get it for you.”

I don’t wait for him to thank me, instead, I leave the room. As much as I want to let what’s going on with me off my chest, there’s no way I’ll do that anywhere where Driver or Grinder can hear. My life’s already screwed up enough so I don’t need them intervening. If they knew, they’d be making a call, which I don’t need.

I’m a big girl and I can handle everything on my shoulders. No matter the weight of it all.

Downstairs I find a vending machine and ignore the fact one of the prospects followed me from the second floor. It’s annoying and I wish they’d leave altogether. I love the club, but between everything going on in my head and now this, it’s too much.

  Totally and completely.

I slide in a bill and punch the button for the Dew my brother wants. Next, I do the same and grab myself a diet. I’m even nice and get another Dew for Grinder.

As I wait for the elevators to go back up, my phone vibrates in my pocket. I grip all the drinks in one hand and pull my cell out. I glance at the screen and groan at the name displayed.

  Storm.

I hadn’t told her anything, and I know she’s going to be pissed at me.

Sliding my finger across the screen, I answer, “Hey, Chickadee.”

“Don’t say hey to me. What the hell, Chels? I mean, you up and leave without even telling me. You told Meadow you’d be gone for a few days, but not me. And for the record, it’s been a few days,” Storm snaps.

“Yeah, sorry, it’s been pretty hectic, and I haven’t had a chance to call.” Lies, lies, total lies.

“If that’s the case then tell me where you are. Maybe I can help.”

I sigh and glance over my shoulder at the prospect following me. He’s cute and around my age, long, thick, shaggy hair that looks way sexy on him. But he’s definitely not my type. Shaking my head, I turn my attention back in front of me. “I’d rather not talk about it.”

“Chelsea,” she calls through the line, and I can picture her face, the stern look she’d be giving me in person. “Where are you?”

If I don’t tell her, she’ll just get the guys to trace my phone, and then they’ll all be in my business. “I’m back home. Mom’s in the hospital, and I’m here. There, are you happy?” I don’t want to be snappy with Storm, she’s my best friend, but she’s got enough on her plate.

“No, that doesn’t make me happy. What happened?”

“I’ll fill you in later. I’m about to go back up to the room.” There’s no way I want to discuss this with her right now. Once I start, she’ll demand to know what else is eating at me.

“Okay, you promise to call later?” Storm asks reluctantly.

“Yes, Mom.” I roll my eyes to the ceiling. God knows I love my best friend, but she can be a mother hen, that is, ever since having the babies. Before, she’d worry, but not like she does now. I hang up before she can go any further and shove my phone back in my pocket. I decide to take a moment more before going back upstairs.
