  THE RECRUIT (BOOK FIVE)

A dangerous betrayal could destroy everything…

Adjusting to life with a new baby is tough enough for Hannah, then throw in a town being overtaken by vampires… and things get deadly.

Especially when the vampires target bitten Lycans like Hannah and new recruit Miranda.

As a bitten Lycan, Miranda will have nowhere to go if she’s kicked out of the program, which makes her inappropriate attraction to instructor, Ryder, stupid and dangerous.

Fortunately, he’s made it clear half-breeds are beneath him. Miranda’s opinion of the arrogant Lycan is worse. So why can’t they stay away from each other?

Why does his touch make both her human and wolf side burn with need?

Just when Miranda believes she’s found her own pack at the training facility, her forbidden affair with Ryder heats up, threatening her new-found stability.

And with a traitor in the recruit program, lives are on the line and Hannah must risk everything to save them.

  CHARACTER REFERENCES

Hello! Thank you for joining me for Book Five of The Recruit Series. It’s been one hell of a ride so far, hasn’t it? After four books and new characters introduced in each one, I thought it might be handy to have a quick reference guide of characters before you delve into Book Five. If you’re like me, it doesn’t matter how much you love or reread a series, there are still times where you can’t quite remember who the heck someone is!

Don’t worry, there is no spoiler info for characters, and if it’s a brand new character introduced in this book, they’re not included in the reference.

  CHAPTER 1

“You can’t tell the Board what happened, Jordan.” Will paced back and forth in the director’s office. “If you tell them that Natalie is like Olivia, they’ll take her away. You know they will. Hannah’s already horrified by what she did, and the twins aren’t handling it well either. If you take Natalie from them, they’ll -”

“Will, stop. Sit down for a minute.”

Will sat down, his big hands clenched in fists. It had been a week since a vampire turned Natalie, and then Olivia had bitten her, and he could have kicked himself for not coming to see Jordan sooner. He knew the director was told about the incident, but he hadn’t spoken to him about it. He’d been too concerned with taking care of Hannah and the baby, too worried about whether or not his mate could forgive herself for what she’d done, to think about anything else.

He hadn’t thought of Jordan and how he would handle the situation at all…until last night. He’d woken in the middle of the night in a cold sweat, his heart racing and his wolf whining at him. If Jordan took Natalie away, Hannah really would never forgive herself. The idea that his mate would suffer in such a way made him feel sick.

He’d knocked on Jordan’s door the moment the man arrived in his office.

“Hannah had no choice, Jordan,” he said. “Natalie was fully turned, and if Hannah hadn’t stabbed her, she would have killed Gavin. And as far as having Olivia bite her, that was my decision. Natalie was bleeding out, and if she had died, neither the twins nor Hannah would be any use to the recruit program.”

He didn’t give a rat’s ass about the recruit program. It used to be the only thing that mattered to him, but now all he cared about was his mate and son. But Jordan still cared about the program, and Will would use whatever leverage he could to keep Natalie here.

“Will, I know exactly what happened that day. I’ve spoken to almost everyone who was at the baby shower. I know why Hannah stabbed her, and it was Jim’s decision to turn Natalie into a” Jordan hesitated, “a good vampire.”

He suddenly laughed. “A good vampire. Jesus, if that isn’t a fucking oxymoron.”

“You can’t take Natalie away,” Will said. “It’ll destroy Hannah and the twins. They’ll be useless to you and -”

“Will,” Jordan’s voice was sharp with anger, “can you just once stop thinking of me as a goddamn monster who doesn’t give a shit about anyone I work with?”

Will sat back in his chair and stared silently at the older man. “You don’t exactly make it easy.”

Jordan considered that before nodding and opening the bottom drawer of his desk. “Fair enough.” He pulled out a bottle of scotch and two glasses. He poured liquid into both and handed one to Will. “Drink this. You look like you need it.”

Will drank, grimacing as it burned its way down his esophagus. “Have you told the Board about Natalie?”

“No,” Jordan tossed back his glass of scotch, “and I’m not going to.”

A weight lifted from Will’s chest, and he didn’t object when Jordan poured him another drink. “Thank you.”

“How is Hannah doing?” Jordan asked.

“It’s difficult right now. Between caring for Gavin and her guilt… she’s struggling.”

“I’m sorry to hear that. From the sounds of it, she didn’t have much choice.”

  “She didn’t.”

They sat in silence for a few minutes. “Why aren’t you telling the Board?”

Jordan laughed. “Does it matter? If I told you it was because I care about the people who work here, would you even believe me?”

Will studied him before sipping at the scotch. “Yeah, I would.”

“Good. Now that you know I haven’t talked to the Board about Natalie let’s discuss the program. I know things aren’t great right now, but I need you back and training the babies. Ryder’s been filling in for you this week, but that means Olivia and the rest of the recruits in her class have missed out on a week of knives and stakes training. The Board requires regular updates on the recruits, and I need to get Ryder doing what we hired him to do.”

“I know. I appreciate you giving me the extra week to be with Hannah and the baby. I can start training the babies today.”

Jordan shook his head. “It’s Friday, and Ryder’s already doing the morning run with them. You can start Monday.”

  “All right.”

Jordan hesitated. “The twins need to be back on Monday as well. This is their third time through the weapons training, and if they don’t pass, they will be kicked out of the program.”

“I’m not sure they want to be in it anymore.”

Jordan sighed. “Maybe that’s for the best. They haven’t exactly made a good impression on the Board.”

“Maybe the Board should stop recruiting children to fight,” Will said.

“They’ve seen the error of their ways.”

  “Have they?”

“Yes.” Jordan glanced at his cell phone when it buzzed. “I have to take this. Can you ask the twins if they want to remain in the program?”

  “Yeah, I’ll talk to them.”

“Good. I’ll need their decisions by Monday morning.”

  “All right. Thanks, Jordan.”

  “You’re welcome.”

Will left Jordan’s office and headed in the direction of the cafeteria. It was breakfast time, and he would see if the twins were there before checking their room. He opened the door to the cafeteria, nearly running into Olivia and Miranda.

“Sorry, sir,” Miranda said. The redheaded Lycan gave him a slightly nervous smile. “Uh, how are you?”

“Fine. Do you have a minute, Olivia?” Will asked. The slender vampire had her hand over her nose, and she gave him an embarrassed look before dropping her hand.

“Sure.” Olivia glanced at Miranda. “I’ll see you tonight, okay?”

Miranda nodded and walked away. Will let the cafeteria door swing shut, muffling the sound of the recruits talking and laughing as they ate breakfast.

  “How’s Hannah doing?” Olivia asked.

“She’s okay.” Will cracked his knuckles. “I owe you an apology.”

  “For what?”

“For breaking your back, for never trusting you, for,” Will paused, “being a rude asshole. I’m sorry.”

Olivia smiled a little. “You aren’t the only one with trust issues around me, but I appreciate the apology.”

She walked away, and Will caught her by the arm. “Wait. You saved my son’s life, Olivia. I will never forget that. I promise you.”
