  Chapter 1

“It was beautiful,” Poppy gushed as she brushed out her long teal waves. “And the flowers were amazing, of course.”

“Of course,” I chuckled in agreement. “You organized them all. How could they be anything but amazing?”

  “Exactly!” Poppy chirped.

“They were beauti ful,” Helena agreed with a smile.

“I like bigger color,” Dinah said with a thoughtful smile. “But these looked perfect for you, Helena.”

I smiled at my three wives as we lounged on our California king-sized bed. My ladies were right, the flowers at Helena’s and my wedding last week had been absolutely perfect.

It had been a lavish and well-attended affair that matched Poppy’s and my wedding in size and opulence. Though the colors had been more on the subdued side to compliment Helena’s golden-brown coloring and tawny wings. There had been hundreds of guests, and I’d been very pleased to be able to invite Katie to celebrate with us.

I’d had to swear my beloved sister to secrecy about my second and third wives, but she’d held true to her promises so far to keep my new life a secret from the rest of the family.

I shook my head as the thoughts flowed so smoothly through my mind.

My world was unbelievably incredible compared to the middle management job and tiny apartment I’d had just months ago. Now, I was the king of an entire world I’d known nothing about, I had three gorgeous and loving wives, and at least two more beauties I was basically courting.

Ivis and I had been spending a fair amount of my free time together, and Gemma had sent me several correspondences that went well past the call of duty. I was excited about my relationships with both the former king’s half-dryad niece, and Lord Finn’s mermaid sister.

“It was a nice break from all the nasty business of cleaning up after Rhaiden,” Helena mused in a sour voice.

“That bastard will wallow in the darkness furthest away from the Goddess for all of eternity.” Poppy scowled, and her iridescent wings bristled with irritation.

“He got what he deserved,” I assured my ladies, and I brushed the pad of my thumb gently over the little wrinkles between my fae wife’s teal eyebrows. “Unfortunately, there’s still a lot more work to be done.”

The too-smooth image of my twelve-times great-grandfather crossed through my thoughts, and I frowned at the asshole’s salt-and-pepper hair.

Rhaiden Shaddstem’s plan to destroy the whole of Orlando and endanger the lives of millions of my subjects as well as all the humans in the area still made my blood boil even though I’d killed him three weeks ago. He’d lost quite thoroughly despite his thousands of mind-controlled followers and the fact that he’d had a hurricane under his control.

With the help of my army of shadow nymph guards and the backing of many loyal representatives, we’d defeated Rhaiden and his zombified minions.

“Did Commander Gemma say how the victims are doing in her last correspondence?” Poppy asked.

“Yeah, she gave me an update,” I said. “She said they’ve been finding nearly a hundred more confused sea paranormals every day, and they’re bringing them all back to the city.”

I smirked a little at the playful way the blue-haired mermaid had commented on the size of her home city, and how it was a good thing they had enough room down there. There was a touch of innuendo in the phrasing, but I’d half-convinced myself I was reading too much into it. Gemma came across as coy and sultry in a way that made me feel electrified, and I was eager for my upcoming visit to the mercity.

It was a royal and diplomatic mission, but I couldn’t even try to deny the fact that I was very excited to spend some time so near the sexy commander of the merfolk armies.

“Lord Trent looked better when I saw him this morning,” Helena observed. “He didn’t seem quite so confused. I think he may be improving.”

“I hope he is,” Dinah murmured as she stroked her hands down the length of her black hair.

“He’s still having moments of confusion where he forgets where he is or what he’s trying to do,” I said. “And he’s still losing time, but it’s getting less intense and happening more infrequently.”

“That’s good,” Helena assured me. “Healing isn’t linear. There will be good days and bad days for a long time still.”

“Isla said he’s been able to remember things more easily the last few days,” I said. “She said he’s been remembering some things that help pinpoint how long he’d been under Rhaiden’s control.”

“How long?” Poppy breathed, and her purple eyes grew sad like she didn’t really want to know.

The sea nymph was the rightful representative of the Northern Atlantic sea nymphs for the last fifty years, and Rhaiden had gotten his magical claws into him early on. It had been a clever move on that asshole’s part because no one really knew how Lord Trent would do the job before he wasn’t really doing it anymore. Snatching the sea nymph up kept Rhaiden’s control well under the radar and allowed him to recruit countless minions from that region.

“A very long time,” I sighed. “He occasionally will remember something from the time he was under Rhaiden’s control, but we’re having trouble placing an exact timeline on any of it. I’m hoping he pulls out a memory that’s helpful in identifying these ‘powerful friends’ Rhaiden claimed to have.”

“That would be helpful,” Dinah agreed.

I was impressed with how much her English had improved since she’d come back from the Philippines with us. There was still an accent to her words that I hoped never went away, but her grammar and word selection were great.

“Yeah, it would,” I muttered. “The other victims might come up with something useful, too. I’ll get a better idea of how they’re all doing when I go to the mercity tomorrow.”

“Salirius City is quite beautiful from what I understand,” Helena mused. “I’ve never had the honor of visiting myself, but Lord Oba regaled me with tales of his visit there years ago.”

“I’m sure that was enthralling,” I chuckled as I thought of the older harpy representative’s taste for over-the-top parties and symbols of his status.

“The story changed and became more incredible each time he told it!” Helena giggled.

  “I’m not surprised!” I laughed.

“Is Ivis excited to accompany you?” Helena asked with a coy smile.

“She is.” I grinned. “She finished packing two days ago, she’s so excited.”

“Oh!” Poppy squealed. “That’s so cute!”

“Is it appropriate to bring her with me for this?” I asked as my eyebrows knitted together.

  “Oh, yes,” Poppy insisted.

Helena nodded in agreement, and even Dinah seemed to have the same opinion.

“You’ve been on several public dates with Ivis now,” Poppy said.

“And you danced with her several times at our wedding,” Helena pointed out.

“You spend a lot of time with her,” Dinah agreed, and a little sparkle of joy shone in her red-brown eyes. “She is very pretty.”

“Not only do you spend enough time with her to desire inviting her to come along with you,” Poppy said, and she ticked off her points on her fingers. “But the Eternal Realm has seen this relationship growing, and everyone knows where it’s going.”

  “That’s true,” Helena agreed.

“It’s just like when you were worried about Helena coming on our honeymoon,” Poppy said.

“And Ivis studied diplomatic relations at University, didn’t she?” Helena said. “She could prove to be very helpful.”

  “She did,” I chuckled.

“It will be a fine chance for her to demonstrate the skills that will be useful in her role as queen.” Poppy grinned.

“Queen Ivis,” Dinah tested the title. “I like this.”

I grinned because I liked it, too.

There was no way I could argue with their points, and that was a relief because I really wanted Ivis to go with me to Salirius City. I could have smacked myself as I realized that was enough reason to invite Ivis to come with me. I was king, and dammit, I had the power and privilege to invite whomever I wanted to go with me wherever I wanted.

  “Yeah.” I nodded. “Okay. Good.”

“It’ll be a really good opportunity, too,” Poppy said with a playful smirk, and she raised her eyebrows in a comical gesture. “If you know what I mean.”

“A little…” Helena chuckled and elbowed the teal-haired beauty teasingly. “Quality time?”

“Yes,” Dinah giggled. “Good time for sex!”

Helena, Poppy, and I burst into laughter at Dinah’s blunt statement of the topic at hand, and I leaned over to kiss her warm lips.

“Thanks for clearing that up, baby,” I said with a big smile.
