I looked back at Penelope, but then she vanished into thin air.
The priestesses screamed as my blood ran cold.
She was just gone.
“Jack!” Penelope screamed. “Jack! Help me! What’s happening! Help!”
I spun around to try and see if she had appeared in one of the waterfalls, but she was nowhere to be seen. Her bodiless voice cried out as the rest of my army hurried over.
“What’s going on?” Olwen asked. “Where’s Penelope?”
“Where did she go?” Nicola yelled as she started to run around the lake. “Did she fall in? Penelope!”
“Find her!” Aleia cried as she flew into the air. “We have to find her!”
Absolute fucking chaos broke out as a message popped up on my interface, and I was barely able to focus on it. It was another longer message that I had started to receive after becoming tier-one, and the golden text glowed invitingly.
Priestess power up unlocked!
Each priestess may adopt god form once a day for up to five hours. They shall be able to both switch locations and speak to followers of their god while using this form.
Holy shit. What the fuck?
I reread the text over and over while pandemonium continued around me.
“Jack?” Tobias asked as he shook me. “What is this? Do you know what’s happening?”
“Everyone!” I called as I finally snapped out of my daze. “Please don’t panic!”
“Don’t panic?” Penelope’s voice screeched. “Jack! I’m gone! I have vanished! Where is my baby? Where are my feet?”
“I promise you’re safe,” I said. “Please, Penelope. Trust me. This is a wonderful day, and I’m so happy that you are the first of my priestesses who got to experience this.”
“The first?” Nieva asked. “What do you mean?”
“Are you sure she isn’t in the lake?” Nicola asked as she pulled at her hair.
Aleia looked like she was hyperventilating as her freckled face turned red, and I hurried over to stroke her hair soothingly. The orcs snarled like they were ready to kill whatever invisible threat had taken Penelope, and the gnomes stared at the sky suspiciously.
“This is a gift,” I said. “A holy gift that we have never seen before. But claiming the Oracle has unlocked something incredible.”
“A holy gift?” Penelope asked as she suddenly sounded much more perky. “What do you mean?”
“My priestesses.” I smiled. “You have been granted the divine ability to transcend into god form, much like I do, once a day.”
The group fell silent, and the thundering waterfalls was the only sound that echoed around the lake. My priestesses stared at me with wide eyes as the ice dragons tilted their heads.
“Pardon?” Nicola said after a moment. “Jack… is this real?”
“You’ve just seen it,” I said. “Penelope, you’re safe. I promise.”
“My lord,” the naiad whispered. “This is the most holy experience I have ever had! I’m so honored to have been chosen for this! But I am also very terrified.”
“So… we can all do it?” Celeste asked. “How?”
“Just focus,” I said. “Tap into that feeling of immense power, and let it take over naturally.”
The harpy bravely closed her eyes as her whole body stilled, and her red hair danced in the breeze before she suddenly vanished.
“Ahh!” Aleia squealed. “Celeste? Can you hear me?”
“Holy shit,” I muttered as I glanced around.
“It’s real,” Celeste’s voice laughed. “I’m in god form! But I suppose I should call it… priestess form? This is unbelievable!”
The other women closed their eyes, and Nieva and Nicola vanished from sight.
“Whoa!” Nicola yelled. “This is amazing! Aleia, you have to try this! It’s like flying but better!”
The ice dragons swung their huge heads around as they looked for their queen, and one of them roared sadly into the sky.
“My darling!” Nieva called. “Don’t worry, I’m right here with you.”
“My queen,” Olwen said. “Are you sure you’re safe?”
“Very sure,” Nieva said. “It’s as if I’m looking down at you all, but I can see for miles!”
“Welcome to my world,” I chuckled as I exchanged a grin with Tobias.
Aleia bit her lip as she shifted her weight from foot to foot, and I put an arm around her shoulder as she twisted her hair nervously.
“It’s safe,” I said gently. “I promise, I wouldn’t let you try it otherwise.”
“But what happens to my body?” Aleia asked. “What if I get lost and can’t come back? I like having my body!”
“I like you having a body, too,” I chuckled. “But you can come back whenever you like. It’s just like your alchemy powers. You have to focus hard, and then you’re completely in charge.”
The fairy nodded as she shook out her limbs, and I stood to the side to watch her.
“You can do this,” I said. “I believe in you.”
Aleia smiled at me before she closed her eyes, and she scrunched up her face in concentration. Then she vanished into thin air after a moment, and the other priestesses cheered loudly.
“I did it!” Aleia called. “This is amazing!”
My army was still staring at the sky in shock as the women’s laughter rang out over the lake. It was a hell of a lot to process, and I couldn’t wrap my head around how huge this was. My women could shift into god form once a day. That meant they could transport themselves around as quickly as I could.
These tier-one god rewards were becoming insane, and I fucking loved it.
“I’ll show you the ropes,” I said. “Olwen, can you just make sure everyone stays around here for now? I’m going to work with the priestesses, but I’ll be back soon.”
“Yes,” the dragon-man said as he kept his eyes on the sky. “We’ll be right here, Jack.”
“I’ll hang around, too.” Tobias smiled. “Go and show them how to work this shit.”
I switched into my god form in the blink of an eye, and the priestesses screeched again.
“Jack!” Penelope called. “This really is the strangest feeling. I’m so happy we get to experience the ways of our beloved god!”
“I’m fucking invisible,” Nicola hissed. “This makes sneaking around other gods’ lands so much easier.”
“We can spy on people,” Celeste said. “Think of how easily we can work out what other gods have planned for war.”
“Now you’re talking,” I chuckled. “We can use this to our advantage for the upcoming battles. Shall we try moving around?”
“Moving around?” Aleia asked. “To where?”
“Anywhere you’d like,” I said. “That’s the beauty of this gift.”
“This is overwhelming,” Aleia whimpered. “It’s so exciting, but I’m still a bit worried that I won’t be able to use it properly. What if I do it wrong and get stuck in a cloud or something?”
I could tell that it might take a while for my women to all be fully comfortable with their new gift, but I knew they would grow to love it. We just needed to spend some time getting used to it.
“Focus on the forest near the convent,” I said. “Think of the river. Imagine that gentle sound of running water, and we’ll meet there.”
“What if I get lost?” Aleia cried. “Jack!”
“You can’t get lost,” I said. “The worst thing that could happen is just staying here. So let’s focus on that river and see what happens.”
“Okay,” Nicola said. “Let’s do it! Race you all!”
I stayed behind for a moment as the women fell silent, and then I switched to the forest river as an explosion of excited screams rang out.
“I did it!” Aleia cried. “Jack! Are you here?”
“Right here,” I said. “Everybody make it?”
The priestesses all echoed out their excitement, and I made sure I heard each of their voices.
“We can do this every day,” Penelope said dreamily. “Look at this view! This is so romantic.”
The priestesses’ excitement gave me a new appreciation for how amazing it was to look down on the world like this. I had gotten so used to it that I had started to take it for granted, but it really was an unbelievable view. Getting to share it with my lovers made it seem even more unbelievable.
“Do you think we can go anywhere?” Nicola asked. “Or just around in Jack’s realm?”
“That will be everywhere soon,” Celeste pointed out. “We’re so close to Jack being the almighty!”
“I feel a little dizzy,” Penelope said. “How is that possible when I don’t have a head? Oh goodness! I don’t like thinking about that!”
“Where did my body actually go?” Aleia wondered. “Is it still beside the waterfalls? Or does it just float about somewhere until I’m ready for it?”
“My body never just floats around, does it?” I chuckled.
“What if I need to sneeze?” Celeste gasped. “Can I get itchy when I don’t have a body? I feel kind of itchy now that I’m thinking so hard about it… Wait. No I don’t. Huh…”
“Where are the babies?” Penelope asked. “Are they in god form, too? What if they’re just floating around somewhere without us!”
“What if my body looks different when I’m me again?” Aleia wailed.
“Shit, what if our boobs are different sizes… Like, smaller,” Nicola breathed.
There was a heavy silence that followed this somehow very weighty statement.
I could tell that some worry was starting to set back in, and I had no idea what damage could be caused by someone in god form having a panic attack. We had tried out switching locations, and that was a huge experiment for one day. I remembered how long it had taken me to get used to this whole transportation method. It was a lot to take in.
“Let’s head back to the others,” I abruptly suggested. “We can meet in our bodies and talk this all through, okay?”
“That’s a good idea,” Aleia said in an anxious tone. “Are we going now? I don’t want to get left behind. It’s so strange not being able to see you all. Please don’t let me get lost!”
“We’re going now,” I said calmly. “I’ll meet you all back at the waterfalls.”
I waited until the forest around me was silent, and then I switched back to the labyrinth. Tobias and the gnomes sat with their feet dangling in the lake as they enjoyed the sun. The dragon-men were patrolling the skies, and the orcs marched around the lake with their axes swinging.
“I’m here,” I said. “Everyone okay?”
“I think so?” Aleia said.
“Okay,” Nicola said. “Sooo to get back to our bodies…”
“Just focus,” I said. “Same as before. Picture yourself standing down on the ground, and allow yourself to get lost in that feeling.”
“Let’s do this,” Celeste said. “I want to perfect this!”
“You will,” I said. “This is just day one, and you’ve already smashed the first part.”
Nieva and Celeste appeared in their bodies first, and the dragon-men cheered excitedly. I changed to my physical body beside them, and Nicola arrived next. She leapt into the air as she laughed, and Penelope came down next. The naiad had tears of happiness in her eyes as she looked at her sisters, and I glanced around as we waited for Aleia.
“Jack,” the fairy squeaked. “I’m scared I’m going to do it wrong. What if I think of the wrong thing and come down into a frog body?”
“I don’t think that’s possible,” I said. “You can do this.”
“You really can.” Penelope nodded. “We all managed just fine, and it was our first time, too. I believe in you!”
Aleia screamed as she suddenly appeared right at the edge of the lake, and I dove at her to catch her before she fell in. Her feet slipped just as I reached her, and she grabbed my arms as I managed to pull her back from the edge.
“Oops,” she said. “I think I focused a bit too close to the water.”
“That’s okay.” I smiled. “Remember, you do have wings in situations like this, but you did it. This is fucking huge.”
I kissed the fairy’s soft lips before I placed her back down on the ground. The women hurried around us as they giggled excitedly, but I noticed Nicola discreetly cupping her breasts as if to check their size.
Then she gave a relieved sigh and sent me a dazzling smile that seemed to confirm all was just as it should be in that department.
The other women noticed this, too, and once it was confirmed that all their bodies were just as they were supposed to be, they burst into even louder cheers.
I was sure this was the best reward I had ever received.
“Have a seat!” Tobias called. “The water’s great!”
We walked along the edge of the water to join my buddy, and the women slid their toes into the lake as we sat down. I studied the map to make sure there was nothing ominous lurking below, but the water was just full of fish and plant life.
The sun warmed the back of my neck as one of the dragons rolled onto its belly behind us, and I chuckled to myself as I relived the past few hours.
We had obtained the Oracle, and my women could finally experience switching forms.
It was a fucking perfect day.
“There are a lot of details to work out,” I said. “We don’t know if there’s a time limit to how long you can remain in the other form. Or if there’s a restriction on the amount of places you can switch to.”
“How will we find out?” Nicola asked as she stretched her golden legs out in the water.
“Trial and error,” I said. “I know it’s safe, but it will probably take a few days to work out the ins and outs of it all, since you can only try it once a day.”
“We truly have been blessed,” Penelope said as she leaned her head on my shoulder.
I wondered if they would get even more abilities when I became the almighty. Would the women be able to use god form whenever they wanted when I was the ruler of the world? My rewards had gotten more insane as I became more powerful, and I knew that things were only going to keep improving.
“Oooh,” Penelope giggled. “Jack, I think our little one enjoyed the journey!”
She guided her hand to her little belly, and I felt the tiniest jolt under her soft skin. It seemed like our kid was just as excited as I was about the whole thing.
“Hello,” I whispered as I kissed the naiad’s belly. “Isn’t your mother just the most wonderful woman?”
“I can’t wait until ours kicks!” Aleia said as she stroked her flat tummy.
“Still a while to wait,” I chuckled. “But we’ll get to meet the little ones soon, and they’re going to have the most badass mothers imaginable.”
A new message suddenly popped up on my interface, and I felt a jolt of excitement when I saw it was a quest.
New God Quest: Destroy the God of Vengeance
Reward Upon Quest completion: control the element of fire
“Hey,” I said. “I think it’s time we start to head back to the coast. We need to plan our next attack.”
“Okay,” Penelope sighed. “But this was such a magical time! We must come back here to relax again sometime.”
“Jack!” Hazel screamed from the coastline.
The young witch’s voice pierced through my mind, and I knew something was wrong.
“We’re under attack!” Hazel cried. “Jack! Please help us! It’s an army, a whole army!”
More voices screaming my name appeared in my mind and cut through my thoughts. They were in serious danger, and their two gods weren’t there to help.
I leapt to my feet as I looked around at my small gathering of followers. There was a reason I had been given this new quest at this very moment. The God of Vengeance had launched his attack on my realm, and I had to prepare my people.
My next battle was here without warning, and I was about to claim my spot as one of the last three gods in the world. I was going to have to dive headfirst into this and keep my people safe. But there was nothing in the world that could rattle my determination and drive.
Did this asshole really think a surprise attack was going to defeat me? Did he not know who the fuck he was dealing with?
It was an unexpected start to a battle, but I was ready. I was going to show him how the almighty fought back.
It was time to go to war.
Chapter 7
I focused on my map to work out where the attack was coming from exactly. Hazel was at one of the furthest points of the golden ice wall that had been built along the most unsafe border of the magic lands.
Penelope and Aleia had produced so many blocks of the magic material that the witches had been hard at work flying it far out to the furthest reaches of the magic lands and creating a solid structure where the God of Vengeance’s land met with mine. This wall traveled along that border for miles and miles to be sure anyone who sought to enter my lands from his side had to cross my army first. I wanted us to be as protected as possible, so I’d made sure groups of soldiers were stationed along the wall in varying shifts.
It was a pretty isolated area and nearly a hundred miles from the western coast, so there wouldn’t be time to rally my whole army together there.
My preparation had definitely saved the day, though. It meant this enemy god wasn’t about to stroll into my land unchallenged.
“We have to go,” I said as I spun around to Tobias. “The God of Vengeance is attacking. It’s time.”
“Holy shit,” my buddy said as he shot to his feet. “Where?”
“Out on the magic land border in the east,” I said. “A hundred miles or so inland from the coast. The witches will flag you down to find it. We’ve got soldiers patrolling all across the wall already. I know it won’t be as many soldiers as a full army, but it’s enough to fucking slaughter them.”
My followers hurried around me as the priestesses grabbed their weapons, and I looked over at the ice dragons.
