Knight
The sun beats down on me through the open curtain. I should have taken my drunken ass over and closed it last night, but that’s not what wakes me up. It’s the sound of yelling kids. I close my eyes and roll over, pressing the pillow to my head to try and block them out, but it’s no use. The noise just gets louder.
I throw my legs over the side of the bed and climb out, walking to the window. I shove it open and see the kids playing loudly outside.
“Hey, shut the hell up! Some people are sleepin’,” I yell at them.
“Hey, fuck you, old man!” One of the older ones yells back at me. I’m not shocked by his words, more so by their sudden appearance. There hasn’t been anyone living in the house next door to me for a year now. Fuck, I hope they aren’t my new neighbors. That would be fucking great.
“Old man? Fuck you, kid!” I’m not even that old. I’m twenty-eight. What the hell?
“Fuck your mom,” he calls back, his little friends laughing along with him. Okay, that’s enough of that shit. I slam the window shut and walk out of my room and down the hall. He wants to see an old man; I’ll show him one.
I’m out the door and around the side of the house in no time. The smaller kids keep laughing and playing with a football, but it’s the older one I’m eyeing. He doesn’t notice me coming until one of his friends slaps at his arm. Then he turns his head and smirks at me. The little shit actually smirks at me. I want to slap the fucking smirk off his face, but I don’t want to catch a case for child abuse, either.
“Who you callin’ old man?” I ask as I get closer. He doesn’t raise an eyebrow or even blink, for that matter. This little shit has been in this position before.
“I called you an old man. What the fuck do you think you’re gonna do?” the kid asks me. I’m a little caught off guard by his mouth, but that doesn’t stop me from stepping up into his face.
“You keep fuckin’ with the devil, and he’s bound to answer, kid.” I see his throat bob as he swallows. He isn’t as big and bad as he thought he was.
“Seen the devil and lived to tell about it,” he responds. Fuck, he’s good.
“You’ve seen a demon, not the devil. Keep pushin’ me, and you will,” I warn him. He doesn’t respond. As I step back, ready to leave, another kid rushes up to me. He slams into me, but I don’t move.
“You can’t talk to him like that!” He snaps at me. When I look down, I see the spitting image of the older kid. Great, there are more than one of them.
“Yeah, I can when he thinks he’s a badass. Now run along and be quiet,” I tell this one.
“You can’t tell us what to do. We’re in our yard,” he states. He has a point there, but I can’t sleep when they’re being this loud.
“Where’s your parents?”
“Mom’s asleep. She has to work later,” the kid says before the bigger one steps in.
“I’m in charge of him. He isn’t doing anything wrong, so grab your cane and walk back home,” he tells me as he pulls a cigarette from his pocket and lights it up. I tilt my head and study the little shit. He isn’t old enough to smoke, that much I’m sure of. So when he goes to inhale, I snatch the cigarette from his lips and bring it to mine. I make it a point to blow the smoke right at his face as I smile.
“All I’m askin’ is you be a little quieter, that’s it.”
“And no one over here cares what you’re asking. We’re not hurting anyone,” he reminds me. He’s hurting me when I don’t get enough sleep. Now I feel like God put this little shit next door just to torture me. That has to be what this is.
“You’re botherin’ me.”
“And?”
“And some of us need sleep,” I tell him once more.
“And some of us don’t care,” he taunts. I run my hand over my face before taking another drag from my cigarette when the front door opens, and a woman walks out.
“Cam, Billy. What are you doing?” she snaps as soon as she sees me standing here in nothing but a pair of sweatpants and sandals. She eyes me up and down before turning her attention to the boys and snaps, “Answer me!”
“We were just playing, and this guy got all butt hurt,” the smaller one explains. I move toward the woman as she moves toward us.
“Listen, I don’t want any trouble. I’m tryin’ to sleep, and they’re bein’ loud as fuck,” I tell her.
“And who the hell are you?”
“I live next door.”
“I didn’t ask that,” she says, raising an eyebrow. Oh, now I see where the boys get it from.
“Knight. My name is Knight.”
“Like nighttime?” The smaller one asks this time.
“Like a Knight in shinin’ armor.” The kid has the balls to snort a laugh before turning back to his mom. “We were playing football. You know I need the practice.”
“Were they in your yard?” she asks me as I shake my head.
“No.”
“Then fuck off.” With that, she flips her hair over her shoulder and walks back toward her house. Yeah, that is most definitely where the kids get their attitudes from. I’m not letting this shit fly.
I stomp behind her and up the steps before she turns to look at me.
“I have a gun,” she warns me. Now, I snort a laugh. I’m not scared of no damn gun.
“So do I.”
“What do you want? They’re being kids. They play,” she says, sounding exasperated with the whole thing. I get that kids play but at seven in the fucking morning?
“It’s seven in the mornin’,” I tell her.
“And?”
“Don’t they have school or some shit?”
“In an hour.”
“Thank fuck,” I mumble before walking back down her steps and back toward my house. That’s when I feel something slimy slam into my back. I can feel it running down my skin. I turn and look over my shoulder to see a mud bomb sliding down my back. My eyes jerk to the older kid as he moves toward the house.
These little fuckers are going to be the death of me; I can feel it already.

Lyra
“Why the hell are you aggravating the neighbors already? We’ve been here a few days,” I remind Cameron, my oldest. He’s fourteen and thinks that he’s grown, but after what we’ve lived through, he has had to grow up faster than others. And I hate that. I regret what got us to this point.
“No one was aggravating him. Billy was playing ball with some of the neighbor kids while a few others and I hung out. He was just being a dick,” he tells me.
“Well, I don’t need to tell you we don’t need enemies right now,” I remind him. I see the way his eyes drop and his shoulders slump. I hate seeing him like this. I hate this is how things have to be. In a perfect world, none of this would be happening, but we don’t live in a perfect world. Never have.
“I was friendly enough,” he argues as I shake my head and roll my eyes. I know what his version of friendly is, and it’s not that nice.
“I have to work tonight. Dinner is in the oven. All you have to do is heat it,” I tell him. He nods his head, knowing the drill all too well. Another thing I hate about my life but what can I do?
“Am I gonna be on a team this year?” Billy asks.
“I don’t know. We’ll see.”
“You say that every year, and then I never get to be on the team,” he whines. Billy is ten and doesn’t fully understand why things can and can’t happen. I hate it, but it is what it is.
I finish making their lunches and bag them up while they eat their breakfast.
“We’re going to be late,” I tell them as I rush around the room, getting their backpacks and jackets together.
“We can ride the bus,” Cameron suggests. I shake my head.
“It’s too dangerous, and you know it.” He has to remember what happened last time. I don’t want a repeat.
“I’m older now,” he reminds me.
“I know you are, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s still too dangerous.”
“We’re in the middle of nowhere, mom. Can’t we at least try to fit in,” he snaps at me. I know this is hard for them, and I get that, but I can’t change the rules now. I just can’t risk it or them.
“You will fit in, Cam, just not on
The drive to the school wasn’t a long one, as I didn’t want to be too far from them in case of an emergency.
Once I drop them off, I drive the twenty minutes to the office and park. Grabbing my bag, I climb out and stroll inside with a smile on my face. I never once in my life thought I would be doing this. A chill runs down my spine, but I shake it off, knowing it’s just a job and one I can handle. I have to be able to handle it. It’s the only job I could get that paid me under the table, meaning I couldn’t be tracked.
“Lyra, you’re here,” Jessica gushes as I walk toward her, a smile plastered to my face.
“I’m here. Did you think I wouldn’t show up?” I ask her. I met Jessica a few years ago when I was in another state. We kept in contact over the years and became best friends. When she moved here to Iowa, I decided it would be a nice change for us and came here as well.
“I knew you’d show up. The money is too good,” Jessica laughs as she throws her arm around my shoulder. She leads me down the hall to an open door, and we both walk inside.
“Kimber, this is my friend, Lyra,” Jessica introduces me to a woman sitting behind a desk. She looks up and smiles at me. She looks me over, taking me in, and my stomach knots. What if I’m not pretty enough? Or what they’re looking for? What if they want someone younger?
“You’re thirty-six?” she asks, not sounding too impressed with my age.
“I am.”
“You don’t look your age. That’s good. Have you ever done anything like this before?” I shake my head. Never have I done anything like this.
“She’s new,” Jessica chimes in.
“That’s fine. Just fine,” Kimber says under her breath as she writes on a sheet of paper. “What you’re going to be doing at first is basic. These men want company. Typically, no sex is involved. Dinner dates and lunch meetings are all they’re looking for at this point. If they want more, you give it. It’s that simple, but for now, I’m starting you off slow.” I swallow the lump in my throat and nod my head as she continues with the rules and directions. I zone out. I can’t believe this is what my life has come to, but if I want to keep the kids in one place for longer than six months, this is the best option I have.
“I understand,” I tell her once she’s finished explaining everything to me. Jessica smiles brightly before grabbing my hand and leading me toward another room. In this room, I find an assortment of clothing, from casual to straight-up stripper.
“What is all this?”
“It’s all clean. Kimber makes sure of that. You can pick whatever you want to wear. Most of the girls here don’t like wearing their clothes to these things.” My heart kicks up a notch as I walk along the long line of clothing racks. I can’t believe there is so much to choose from. I reach for a shirt, pull the hanger free, and look it over.
“I don’t know what to wear,” I tell her.
“It’s fine. This is just casual, remember? You’re going to be doing lunch dates for right now. Most of these guys just want someone to talk to. Nothing more,” she tells me. My heart still doesn’t calm inside me as she helps me choose the clothes I’ll be wearing. Once we’re finished, I change, and she helps me with my makeup. Then, I’m ready for my first appointment.
The thought of that makes my stomach turn. My appointment. Bile rises in the back of my throat before I turn and rush to the closest bathroom. As I lose my breakfast, I hear the door open and close.
“It’s just nerves. You’ll be fine. There’s no sex involved in this, Lyra. Just eat and talk. That’s it,” Jessica says on the other side of the door.
I’m debating why I even said yes to this mess.

Knight
Isit at the table, tapping my fingers on the edge as I wait. I don’t like waiting, and I’ve been waiting for ten minutes longer than usual. It annoys me, pisses me off a little too.
Finally, I hear the door beep, and it slowly opens, allowing light into the room. I stay in the corner, in the dark, where they can’t see me. I don’t want them to see me. They have no reason to.
“Hello?” I hear the small feminine voice say.
“Come in and shut the door,” I tell her.
“There’s no light.”
“Exactly. Shut the door,” I say once more. They always take notice of the lack of damn light, and it annoys the hell out of me. I can hear her walking across the floor before bumping into the chair.
“Sit.”
“Why are we in the dark? I thought we were having lunch.” I’m having lunch. She isn’t. Surely, she knows this by now.
“I don’t have many rules. The main one is not to touch me. I don’t like bein’ touched,” I tell her. Not since the accident and flames burnt my skin. I close my eyes and shake my head as the thoughts of the past try and sneak back in. I shake them away and focus on her instead. The way she smells, like flowers. Why do all women smell like flowers?
“I thought this was a lunch date,” she repeats. I groan. I paid good money for her, and I damn sure better get what I want.
“Let me just tell you what’s gonna happen. You’re gonna strip for me. Then you’re gonna lay naked on that bed, and I’m gonna eat you until you can’t breathe.” I hear the sharp intake of breath.
“This … this was supposed to be lunch,” she repeats.
“It is. My lunch,” I tell her. “Now strip.” I hear her kick off her shoes, and then her clothes drop onto the floor. I listen to the woman breathing heavily as the mattress shifts, and she climbs onto the bed. I stand from the chair, the only light in the room coming from under the door as I stalk toward the bed, pulling my cut off and then my shirt.
I reach for her, sliding her to the end of the bed, where I kneel on the floor and run my fingers up her thighs. She shifts uncomfortably, and it makes me wonder if she’s done this before. It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve broken a new girl in for Kimber.
“Just relax,” I tell her. That causes her to tense further, and I chuckle. I let my fingers slowly glide up and down her leg before moving closer. Then I feather them over her stomach and down over her mound. She sucks in a breath, and I can tell immediately she’s never done this before.
“You call the shots here. If you say stop, I will.”
“Are you going to have sex with me?” her voice is shaky and makes my cock hard.
“No.”
“Then what are you going to do?” she asks.
“I’m gonna make your legs shake, your body tremble, and make you come hard. Can I do that?” I ask. I know there’s no forcing Kimber’s girls into anything they don’t want to do, and there’s no way in fuck I’d ever do that anyway. So I wait for her to agree or tell me no.
“Okay.” It was the softest of whispers, but I heard it just the same.
I lean down and press my lips against her thigh. She gasps as I slowly drag my lips over her flesh and straight between her legs. I spread her wide, and then I lick, one long stroke that has her knees trembling already. It makes me wonder if this is all a show for me or does it really feel that good.
I continue long strokes for a few minutes, keeping one hand pressed to her stomach to keep her in place. The other keeps her open to me while I lick and suck at her. She bucks off the bed, her body pressing into my face, and I continue to eat the best meal I’ve tasted in a long time.
Her pussy is sweet, just the way I like them. When I feel her legs shaking, I know she’s close, and all I want is for her to come all over my face. I suck her clit into my mouth and tease the fuck out of her until her hand comes down. I let her thread her fingers through my hair and ride my fucking face like this might be her last chance to get off. Her hips roll, her breathing is sporadic, and all I can hear is her moans of pleasure as she keeps going. I keep licking and tugging until she stops moving and her whole body tenses. Then she lets go, screaming for God as she comes for me.
“Oh God, oh God!” She cries out as I lap at her, taking all she has to give. I draw it out, too. I want her to feel this orgasm down the tips of her toes. I want her on shaky legs when she stands up after this.
