“Skip it,” I said. He started down the walk, but then turned back before I closed the front door completely.
“You haven’t seen Terry anywhere, have you?” he asked. “She’s quit her job at the hotel and checked out and she didn’t go home. I’ve been wondering where she got to.”
“You shouldn’t ever let a girl like that out of your sight, son,” I said.
“I guess you’re right,” he said, and started down the path again. I watched him get into his car and back out of the drive before I closed the door. Then I turned and looked up the stairway.
“Hey, Terry,” I called. “How’d’ you like to have breakfast in bed again? I’ll bring it up in about ten minutes.”

Ferguson Findley (1910–1963) was the pseudonym of Charles Weiser Frey, an American novelist from Pennsylvania. He wrote several minor crime novels in the 1950s—the most successful of which, Waterfront, was made into the film The Mob in 1951.
