Hellions—Band of outstanding and audacious students at the Sagrada Academy. Most infamous members of the group were Javier Tornesol, Elezar Grunito, Atreau Vediya and Kiram Kir-Zaki.
Heram—“Shunned one” in Haldiim.The state of having been formally shunned by society.
Hierro Fueres—Heir to the dukedom of Gavado.
Hilthorn Radulf (Skellan)—Ruler of Radulf County in Labara; powerful witch. Battled and destroyed a demon lord.
Hylanya Radulf—Younger sister of Count Radulf; also a powerful witch.
I
Inissa—Artist. Mistress to Prince Jacinto; was once Atreau’s lover; now involved with Spider.
Irsea—Last Bahiim ancient who guarded the Circle of Wisteria. Murdered, but her spirit remains in the bodies of her familiars. Her murder remains unsolved.
Isandro Grunito—Dead; Firstborn heir to the Earldom of Anacleto.

Jacinto Sagrada—Prince, poet, deadbeat. Fourth son of Sevanyo Sagrada. Atreau Vediya’s former upperclassman and friend.
Javier Tornesal—Bahiim and guardian of a sacred shajdi. Former Duke of Rauma, Javier converted to the Bahiim religion (as Alizadeh’s student) and was declared a heretic and excommunicated. He fled into exile with his lover, Kiram Kir-Zaki. He currently serves Count Radulf as his astrologer. He is Fedeles Quemanor’s cousin, though many believe that the two are in fact half brothers (Javier’s father having engaged in an a air with his own sister to father Fedeles).
Juleo Sagrada—Current king of Cadeleon. Born in 1275, crowned in 1305, very unwell.
K
Kaweh—Bitter but stimulating drink popular among the underclasses of Haldiim and picked up by Cadeleonian intellectuals.
Kili—Hylanya Radulf ’s champion.
Kiram Kir-Zaki—Haldiim genius from very wealthy and respected family of candymakers. Fled into exile with Javier but now is master mechanist in Count Radulf ’s court.
L
Labara—Protectorate nation of Cadeleon. Divided into four counties. Radulf County, the largest and most northerly, has recently broken away from Cadeleon to become fully independent. Famous for roses, witchcraft and their great love of butter.
Ladislo Bayezar—Nobleman. Attended Sagrada Academy. Former underclassman to Procopio Nolasar.
Leadro—Music instructor in the Quemanor household.
Lliro Vediya—Atreau’s eldest brother; attached to the ministry of the navy. Heir to barony.
Lord Wonena—Supporter of the royal bishop. In con ict with Fedeles over upkeep of shared roadways.

Marisol Plunado—Ariz’s niece and younger twin daughter of Del a Plunado and Hierro Fueres.
Meztli—Mythical demon enthralled by the Brand of Obedience by Our Savior. Meztli harnessed the power of Crown Hill to forge his ruby shields. Meztli’s shield—A huge ward that protected Our Savior’s forces during the Battle of the Shard of Heaven.
Miro Reollos—Oasia’s first husband; lover of Atreau, killed by Elezar a er attacking Atreau in a jealous rage.
Morisio Cavada—Atreau’s school friend, from a merchant family. Scienti cally minded, sails on the Red Witch.
Moteado—Ariz’s old dappled stallion.
Mother Arezoo Kir-Naham—Owns a pharmacy in the Haldiim district of Cieloalta and is an Honored Mother (though she has no biological children). Aunt of Es r; friend and sister-in-law to Querra Kir-Naham. Muerate—Extremely deadly poison, leaves a black scar on the very few people who recover from its e ects.

Narsi Hilario Lif-Tahm—Master physician in the Quemanor household, attached to Holy Father Timoteo.
Nillo—Acolyte serving Father Timoteo in the Quemanor household. Nube—Atreau’s gray stallion.
Nugalo Sagrada—Royal bishop, second-born prince of the realm. Nunes Yago—Captain in the royal bishop’s guard in the capital.
O
Oasia Quemanor—Wife of Fedeles, widow of Lord Reollos, eldest daughter of Duke of Gavado.
Old Roots—a.k.a. Old Routes.The tunnels dug by Haldiim as hiding places and means of escape from the city during the first purge, three hundred years ago. Most have collapsed, but some are still used by smugglers and black marketeers.
Ollivar Falario—Elezar’s former underclassman; playwright and member of Prince Jacinto’s entourage.

Paulino Fueres—Duke of Gavado.
Pepylla Dacio—Operator of the Green Door, loyal to Jacinto.
Peraloro River—River that divides the capital and runs east to the sea. Procopio Nolasar—Courtier to Jacinto.
Posco—Holy Father who performed and sancti ed Narsi’s parents’ marriage.
Q
Querra Kir-Naham—Cadeleonian convert to the Bahiim religion, widowed. In charge of kitchen gardens in the Quemanor household. Mother of Es r.
R
Ra e Kir-Zaki—Haldiim physician and Narsi’s mentor. Married to Alizadeh Lif-Moussu.
Red Stallion—Sword house where illegal and legal duels are held for cash prizes. Members are infamous for their brutality and immorality, but the public duels always draw huge crowds.
Remes—Royal bishop’s heir and Sevanyo Sagrada’s second son. Infatuated with Clara Odalis.
Rinza—Riquo’s sister. Spindly knife market informant, employed by Atreau.
Riossa Grunito— Painter. Wife of Nestor Grunito, daughter of a city judge.
Riquo—Rinza’s brother. Thief employed by Atreau.

Sabella Calies—Swordswoman. Friend to Atreau. Her uncle owns the Red Stallion sword house and she makes much of her living there, when she isn’t being hired out as an assassin. Famous in Anacleto; romanticized versions of her biography have been made into a number of books and stage plays there.
Sacred Groves—Bahiim holy places comprised of rings of ancient trees or
other plant life. These include Circle of Wisteria, Circle of Crooked Pine, Circle of Red Oak, Circle of the Willow Grove, and Circle of Long Kelp. Sahalia Kir-Khu—Haldiim physician who attended Narsi’s birth. She later relocated to the Salt Islands at Father Timoteo’s prompting.
Salt Islands—Chain of volcanic islands south of Cadeleon. Famous for the Butter y Temple and also hot springs.
Savior (the/Our)—Born Tormen Cadeleon. Warrior chief and mystic who battled the second invasion of demon lords alongside a coalition of other powerful warlords, witches, Bahiim, Old Gods and mystics. He sacri ced himself and four chosen followers in his Final assault against the demons at the Peraloro River, where the spell he unleashed—the Shroud of Stone—resulted in the Shard of Heaven being formed. With the defeat of the demons and Cadeleon’s death, a cult sprang up. They eventually grew into the Cadeleonian Holy Church.
Sevanyo Sagrada—Crown prince, born 1297.
Skellan—see “Hilthorn Radulf.”
Sparanzo—Son of Fedeles and Oasia.
Suelita Estaban—Cryptographer, mathematician, Sabella’s lover.
T
Tariq—Black cat that shares Narsi’s rooms (name means “whisper” in Haldiim).
Timoteo—Holy Father, older brother of Elezar and Nestor Grunito. Trueno—One of four Sagrada siblings who joined the Savior’s army. He became the Savior’s personal guard and was one of the four chosen for the assault against the demon lords’ army. He is said to have been transformed into a giant eagle, and as such shielded the Savior from above and cleared his path to the heart of the army. Trueno’s nephew became the First recognized king of the nation of Cadeleon.

Usane—Kingdom to the west of Cadeleon. Known for metalwork and closely guarded glassmaking techniques.
Usto—Gardener in the Quemanor household.
V
Victaro Irdad—Groom at Sagrada Academy, killed under mysterious circumstances.
Villo—Parrot belonging to Oasia Quemanor.
W
Waarihivu—Mythic sect of realm-traversing sorcerers at war with demons; used the Black Fire to destroy whole worlds. Most members of the sect were hunted down and killed or converted by the Bahiim.
Wadi Lif-Tahm—Narsi’s mother; died when he was twenty-one. Lived as heram (“shunned one”) until her mother died when Narsi was ten. Returned to the Haldiim community when he was twelve, though many elders refused to recognize her.

Xalvadar Sagrada—Prince Sevanyo’s heir. Xavan—Sailor; sometimes-informant for Atreau.
Y
Yah-muur—An Old God, known as the Fawn Goddess, also the Summer Doe. Said to take on a new body and shed her old horns every time she is slain. She was one of the four chosen to unleash the Shroud of Stone against the armies of the demon lords.
Yara Nur-Aud—Haldiim actress and part-time agent for Atreau.
Z
Zacarrio Odalis—Count. Elderly husband to Clara. Supporter of the royal bishop.

She whiles away the rainy evenings writing fantasy and science-fiction featuring LGBTQ protagonists. Her first novel, Wicked Gentlemen, won the Spectrum Award for best novel. Content Warning
Characters in this book encounter and fight against racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia and ableism. When I have dramatized these conflicts, I’ve done my best not to make the scenes over-long or graphic. I’ve tried to avoid real-world insults and slurs, which may be triggering.
Several protagonists are survivors of sexual assault. However there are no scenes depicting sexual assault in the book. Passing reference is made by characters to abuse in their childhoods, however no scenes are dramatized. There is reference to a stillborn child.
Characters in the book deal with depression and thoughts of self-harm. Suicide is not depicted nor is it romanticized.
The violence that is depicted is largely in keeping with a fantasy adventure. There are sword fights and assassinations. Bloodshed, injuries and deaths are dramatized but I have shied away from gratuitous gore.
Above all, I’ve done my best to write a fun, inclusive story that I hope you enjoy.
