It took a while for the gardaí to realise that Mrs Buckley had been eating Aidan’s face in a futile attempt to stay alive.

Mrs Buckley was buried a week later at St Catherine’s Cemetery. Over two hundred family and friends attended, and her grave was heaped with flowers. Sinead wore a black coat with a black velvet collar but didn’t cry. She had cried enough already.
Aidan was buried at night in a cillín, an overgrown graveyard for unbaptised children and unrepentant sinners, in Glanmire. Although the practice of burying children in cilliní was obsolete, his mother had wanted him buried there to be close to his stillborn sister.
It was so dark when three Travellers buried him that the only glow came from her cigarette.
