“Have fun,” McNamara chuckled as he climbed into his truck.
“Wait,” I protested. “You’re leaving already?”
“That little sideshow put us behind schedule,” he said. “God, I hope we don’t run into any more little shits like that.”
And then the trucks started to move again, and a moment later, there was no sign that the Army had even been there.
“Holy shit,” I muttered. “I’m really in charge?”
I took a moment to study the town, and my mind was already working through a checklist of things we’d need to do. The Radleys might have been the first threat, but they wouldn’t be the last. The town needed someone to protect it, and I knew that person was me.
