  CHAPTER 1

Darkness, the most oppressive that Alanna had ever felt, enveloped her as she carefully made her way through a maze of limbs, roots, and webbing. In this part of the forest there were no stars, no wind, and no path back. Her magic seemed to expand, warming her limbs as she strained to catch a glimmer of light reflecting off a shell or the faintest hint of the voice that had called her here. Her heart beat faster with every step she took. Each one brought her further from the safety of the clearing. And yet, her need to find the source grew stronger.

"Hello?" She called, her voice seeming to fall flat in the stillness. "I'm here. I came."

  Daughter

The voice, while still in her head, sounded somehow louder as she continued ahead.

  "Where are you?"

  Everywhere. Nowhere. Come.

Her feet found purchase in some unseen substance beneath them, and she moved forwards, following the voice wherever it led. The forest floor felt softer and more giving the further she went, like a carpet of threads had been woven and placed here to lead her forward.

"Please," she whispered softly. "I came. Let my friends go home."

  Home is here.

She tripped, her hand shooting out to grab hold of a thick rope of silk that hung down in front of her face. A moment later, the rest of the webbing appeared as something heavy crashed down from the branches above. The cylindrical shape was as tall and wide as she was, and it churned her stomach as it swung back and forth in the gloom. With a strangled cry, she threw herself forward, away from the swinging mass and through the underbrush that reached out to scratch and drag at her calves. Her dress caught on everything as she tried to push through, ripping it further into shreds that eventually only barely managed to cover her as she burst through the confines of the trees.

And then everything changed. The world around her shifted as if it too was caught in a dream. Everything was darker and softer. Even the sound of her footsteps became more muted, the texture of the air and the smell of earth – everything seemed to change. For a brief second, she wondered if she should scream for help. Then the thought passed, and she realized she didn't know who or how to call for aid in the middle of a dark dream. She couldn't risk her lovers lives because she followed a voice and a desire.

Instead, she let her feet carry her onwards, pausing every few steps to listen for movement or sounds that might indicate someone, or something, else had entered the clearing. After several minutes, however, she lost all track of time as she continued blindly. All sense of direction left her. Soon, she wasn't sure which way she'd come from and whether she would be able to find her way back.

Suddenly, though, she heard the familiar clacking of claws against stone. She froze, listening intently as she searched the darkness for the source. Eventually, she saw them, crouching low along the path. There were at least a dozen small Spyders lining her way forward. As she approached, they silently reared, waving four or five legs in the air but never touching her.

  Daughter of flame. Come.

As though summoned by her fear, her magic flared as the voice spoke. She whimpered as her knees buckled, causing her to lurch to one side. The tattered ruins of her dress caught on one of the waving Spyders, and she ripped it free with a cry. Tearing the remaining fabric, she threw it behind her, covering the face of one of the creatures, as the rest fell in line behind her.

Fear not. They are drawn to the flame. As we all are.

Her hands shook as she tried to keep her fears at bay. With her fingers digging deep crescent marks into her palms, she slowly began to move again, forcing herself to continue walking despite the tremors running through her. This place felt wrong, evil, and unnatural. How could she have let herself be called here alone?

The Spyder's clicks filled her mind, and the warmth returned to her core. She moaned, clutching at her stomach as she walked. Her nipples hardened, and her clit began to pulse between her thighs. One of the creatures following her pressed itself against the back of her legs, pushing her forward. The contact left her shaking.

"Yes," she gasped as the lust suddenly returned.

The Spyder's click turned into an excited hum as it pressed its body against hers. Its scales rubbed against her naked flesh as it pushed itself harder against her.

"More," she breathed, leaning into it. "Harder."

  No

The command rocked her as the small creature turned and dashed away.

Her body shaking with need, Alanna sank to the soft forest floor. "Please…"

The remaining Spyders fell silent as a soft light bobbed and weaved through the trees before them. Squinting against the sudden brightness, Alanna couldn't stop a small cry from clawing its way out of her throat.

A figure stepped out of the shadows, moving with slow grace. She, for the creature was certainly female, was covered in small hairs and tinted scales that shifted and fit her form like a kind of armor as she moved. Like the smaller creatures, she had multiple arms and legs, although they were attached to a very human-like torso. The glow, brighter now, as emitting from long veins of light that ran across her body and converged into the form of a household spider across her perky breasts. She had a beak-like mouth that seemed to somehow twist into a mockery of a smile. But it wasn't any of that that held Alanna's attention. It was the large, multi-faceted eyes that dominated her face that the Fire Starter couldn't look away from. They glowed red or purple depending on how she swayed as she moved forward, and Alanna couldn't help but feel like a fly caught in her web.

Daughter. Come. Light your fire and illuminate your fate.

Alanna moaned, lowering a shaking hand down between her legs. She couldn't fight it any longer, she had to have release. The images of her partners, her friends, danced through her mind as though being pulled to the forefront. Her body ached, begging to be touched and taken. If she could just get close enough…

But when she looked up at the Spyder creature, really looked, her mind screamed for her to run.

"I can see your desires," her voice was like nails against silk, speaking directly instead of in her mind. "I can free you from them. Give you eternal bliss."

Alanna trembled as tears welled in her eyes. Her body craved release. If she could only achieve it, maybe she could burn the entire forest and every Spyder within it. How far had she ridden? Far enough for her friends to be clear of an inferno, for sure. She spread her legs, balancing on her knees as she slid a finger inside her folds and almost cried with relief.

"Please." Her voice cracked as she forced herself to look up into the horrific face of the female creature. "Please let me cum. Let me show you my fire."

  We are not stopping you

Her breath hitched as she watched the Spyder approach her. The creature knelt, lowering her head to gently nuzzle at the base of Alanna's neck, sending tremors down to her already dripping pussy. Three legs came down around where the Fire Starter knelt, surrounding her, as a fourth angled between her quivering thighs.

Before it could touch her, Alanna shrieked and flung herself back – fear winning over desire.

"Stay back!" She summoned a small flame to her palm, waving it wildly at the towering female. "I killed one of you before. I can do it again."

The Spyder cackled, the sound vibrating up her thorax and out of that mouth that was almost human but not quite. Her face twisted into the macabre smile once more. "You burned one of my…" She paused, as though trying to find the right word. "Daughters."

Only that wasn't right. As she spoke the word out loud, she supplied its meaning directly to Alanna's mind, and what the Fire Starter saw was a silent horror film. Humans, taken hostage and bent into forms that didn't make any sense. In her mind, she watched as the creature wrapped them in cocoons of iridescent silk that would become the monsters she had grown up calling Spyders.

The creature in front of her, the true alien Spyder Queen, had created the armies that the Starter's had been trained to kill from their kind. Neighbors, friends, family. Any that didn't die in the attack were recreated for this Queen's purpose.

"So many." Tears fell from Alanna's eyes as she squeezed them shut, trying to erase the images that c

ontinued to parade through her mind. "You killed them."

I freed them from their frail bodies, just as I will free you from your consuming energy.

"Why?" Alanna sobbed, unable to control herself. She saw her family, her mother, and father, being carried away in her mind. There was no way to tell if it was real…

  “I will show you.”

  CHAPTER 2

The Queen stepped back, clicking in her alien tongue towards a group of Spyders to her left. As Alanna watched three of them scurry away, she couldn't help but wonder who they had been. Had she known them? Grown up with them?

She tried to call the flame from her belly, but it had been extinguished. There was no desire, no lust. They had been replaced by a sadness so deep that she didn't think she could ever feel happy again.

"Why us?" She finally asked, bracing as she looked the Queen in the eyes. "Why Earth?"

"Your kind-" She paused again, and Alanna realized that it was hard for her to form some sounds needed for English with her limited lip structure. "Is easy to drain."

"Drain?" The word hung heavy in the air, and when the creature answered, it was once again directly to her mind.

There was a man. It started, stringing towards words with much more ease than Alanna had heard before. Before we freed him from his frail form, he was thinking about a food item. Something sweet that he could snap in half and his destiny would be etched on a card inside. He would eat the food after freeing the destiny. You are like that. We snap you, break you, consume you, in order to free your destiny. Your powers, they strengthen us. Your fires propel our ships. Your water quenches our thirst. Your destiny keeps us alive. It is your fate to serve and to be freed.

Alanna's hands balled into fists as she rose unsteadily to her feet. "Did you just compare my entire species to a fortune cookie?"

The Queen cocked her head, blinking slowly, as though processing the idea. After a few moments, she nodded, "Yes."

"Bitch!" The tiniest tendril of flame flickered from Alanna's palm as she tried to burn the horrors around her.

Did you just compare me to a female canine?

Shaking, Alanna returned the nod and curt reply. "Yes." She took a step back, but the smaller creatures quickly blocked her path. She spread her arms, addressing them. "What are you doing? You were human once. Don't let her do this to us! To you!”

The only response she received were a few that clicked their mandibles or danced uneasily on their legs.

They do not hear you. They only hear me.

There was truth in the Queen's words. The creatures in front of her might have once been human, but they weren't anymore. Slowly, she turned back, "You called me daughter. Why? Was it just to lure me here?"

I am your mother. I made you what you are.

"Mother?!" Alanna yelled angrily, her hands flying up to clasp either side of her head as though she were trying to stop any more images from running through her skull. "I just saw my mother being carried off to be turned into one of…those!" She pointed at the small group of Spyder's nearby. "You killed my mother!"

If she is one of us, she is not dead. She had been made better. Improved. You will join her, once we have harvested your energy.

"Fuck no, I won't!" Alanna took a step back, followed by another, until she had put twenty feet between herself and the Queen. She was about to turn and run when she heard a familiar voice to her right.

"Let go of her, you punk ass, creepy eight legged freaks!"

"Willow." She breathed her lover's name, only moments before she saw a glint of light illuminating the tell-tale pink hair of her friend. "Willow!"

Willow, who was currently wrapped neck to ankles in the same iridescent webbing Alanna had seen in her mind, craned her neck in the Fire Starter's direction. Catching sight of her friend still free, she screamed, "Alanna, run!"

Behind Willow, another procession of Spyders appeared, each carrying one of her friends. They were all bound and wiggling, trying to free themselves as they were brought forward and dumped in front of the Queen's seemingly gloating form.

Her fire flared low in her belly as Alanna turned to once more face the Queen. "Let them go."

  "Why?"

"They don't belong to you. They are people, humans with hopes, dreams, fears…you can't just drain them and then throw them away." She glanced at her friends, noting how pale Vicky's face was and catching Shauna's brave gaze. The darker girl nodded grimly in her direction, Alanna felt her fire burn brighter.

"Yes, they do. You all do." The Queen hissed, catching a hold of one of the figures that had been brought before her. She lifted it up, presenting it to Alanna. "This one is already a husk. Used. Useless."

"Melinda." Alanna whispered, recognizing the girl's long, limp hair as it hung over her seemingly lifeless face.

She came to me, just as you did. She wanted power. Revenge. The Queen added, speaking so clearly in Alanna's mind, that the Fire Starter could basically watch how Melinda's final hours had played out. She told me you took something from her, something that belonged to her. I had to inform her that she was wrong. You all belong to me and so you had not stolen anything from her but had stolen a precious conduit from me.

In Alanna's mind, she saw Melinda, with a scowl on her face and her fingers curled into tight fists, standing up to the creature in front of her. A second later, the Queen raised a mandible, backhanding her almost across the entire clearing. She could almost feel the pain and shock as the Wind Starter tried to raise to her feet, only to be pinned down by a horde of the smaller Spyders. They wove her up in the material and as each knot became tighter around her, a faint glow came from her belly. It expanded until it seemed to burst free and was captured in what Alanna could only assume was a transport vessel for the magic, leaving Melinda limp and still.

"You killed her." Surprised, she wiped tears from her cheek. "I won't let you do that again."

"You can't stop me." The Queen dropped Melinda, whose body fell to the ground with a sickening thud, before reaching down to wrap a long, thin leg around Willow.

  "No! Let her go!"

"It doesn't matter now. This one is done."

"But she isn't," Alanna cried out as she ran toward the Queen. "She's alive!"

"Look at her. She is a husk."

Willow snarled something that ended with her spitting up at the creature's face. The Queen, seemingly unfazed, beckoned for the Spyder's nearest her to take the squirming Ice Starter.

"Or, at least, she will be once we are done."

"No!" Alanna's feet came unglued, and she sprinted forward, kicking and clawing at the smaller creatures in an effort to free Willow from their grasp. "Stop!" Her voice sounded shrill even to her own ears, and she bit her lip against the scream that threatened to escape. "Don't hurt her!"

As she struggled, she could see the other girls struggling too. Their bonds were strong, but they were fighting back. Even Vicky was pulling and twisting, trying to free herself from the sticky webs.

"Let us go!" Shauna shouted, her voice hoarse from screaming. "We aren't yours to use!"

"Shauna!" Alanna screamed, reaching a hand desperately towards the Earth Starter as a Spyder turned towards her lover.

A flash, followed by a burst of heat, rushed through them. The Spyder's holding Shauna screamed, their unearthly vocal cords producing a sound that sent ripples down Alanna's spine and echoed through the trees. The Spyder's holding Willow were not lucky, they never had a chance to scream before being encased in ice, while the ones holding Vicky were flung against the nearest tree trunks, their shells cracking sickeningly on impact. All three Starter's bindings were burned from them, along with their clothes, leaving them naked in the middle of an angry horde of Spyders. The phoenix brand on each glowed in the dim light.

"Alanna?" Vicky asked, slowly shuffling towards the Fire Starter while keeping her eyes on the Spyders in front of her. "What just happened?"

"I don't know." Alanna answered, reaching out to pull Shauna into a quick embrace as the Earth Starter sprinted towards her.
