I drank a lot and endlessly thanked people. Most of them told me to shut the fuck up and pressed another drink in my hand.
Well before the festivities showed signs of letting up, I slipped away to the garage for a dose of solitude. Under a single bare bulb, I looked over the history of my flight experiments—the parts and pieces of my SCUZ and ZIPPY and SCRAM and DOLT and FLOP and BLASTER units. I picked up one of the originals—one of the old units with the fixed propeller. It still worked. Taking the heavy old device in hand, I wandered up the barn hill to the hay loft where I’d learned to fly. The alfalfa-scented space had served me well. This night, it was too dark to see inside, so I stood in the open door gazing at the sea of corn stubble that stretched to a dark line of trees in the distance. Many of the trees were dead ash trees, yet soaring above them never lost its thrill, a thrill that tugged at me now.
The black sky brimmed with stars. Not Montana stars. They have more. But Essex has enough.
A nice night. A perfect night, in fact.
A perfect night to fly.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
HOWARD SEABORNE is the author of the DIVISIBLE MANTM series of novels as well as a collection of short stories featuring the same cast of characters. He began writing novels in spiral notebooks at age ten. He began flying airplanes at age sixteen. He is a former flight instructor and commercial charter pilot licensed in single- and multi-engine airplanes as we as helicopters. Today he flies a twin-engine Beechcraft Baron, a single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza, and a Rotorway A-600 Talon experimental helicopter he built from a kit in his garage. He lives with his wife and writes and flies during all four seasons in Wisconsin, never far from Essex County Airport.
