Ryun’s expression darkened. “I do not break my promises.”
“I didn’t mean that. I know that you probably believe everything you’ve said, but you haven’t been very involved in the running of this town. And you don’t need to be—there are plenty of powerful rulers who let others manage for them—but is that what you are planning on doing?”
“I didn’t need to do anything. You took care of everything.”
“I did so because I didn’t want anyone to do something stupid around you and get us all killed. But is that what you want for the future? Do you want me to be the one in charge of dealing with day-to-day business?”
Ryun tilted his head. He hadn’t really thought much about it, which was to her point. Still, he didn’t want to be burdened with actual ruling; he could keep his word and protect the town while leaving everything else to others. In part, the reason why he’d raised her to Lord Realm was so that she wouldn’t need to worry about others in the town not respecting her. She might not have heard what others had been saying about her, but Ryun did.
“Yes,” he said finally. “I would like for you to be my second-in-command, for you to deal with everything. I do not have the patience nor the desire to actually lead others.”
“I am willing to do this, but it will not be the same as it has been so far,” Anrosh told him. “I am not qualified to make the big decisions, so I will take care of the details and make sure that the town grows properly, but I will need things from you. I will need you to decide on the broad strokes, what you want this town and territory to become in the future. And I will need resources, Essence to incentivize the people. We will need to set up a system for Essence donation for the town budget, buying items, setting up food productions… I can take care of most of these things, but I will still need you to be a leader.”
Ryun looked at her, seeing her rigid stance, her determination. She wanted this as much as Ryun did not. He nodded his head. “Agreed. You will be in charge, and I will be available for consultations on anything you believe is important enough to warrant my opinion. As far as the big picture, I do not have one, aside from getting stronger.”
“You will need to decide on something. There is a limit as to how strong you will be able to get in this territory, and if you are going to uphold your promise of keeping these people safe, you will need a plan.”
Ryun blinked. She was right; he hadn’t thought about that. That made things more complicated, which meant that he would need to make the town strong enough to survive without him. He did not plan on being stuck here forever. Growing stronger meant fighting more powerful monsters, and that meant going beyond this territory.
“I will think on it,” Ryun said.
Anrosh gave him a long look and then nodded her head. Finally, he felt her body relax and she sighed loudly. “When are you planning on activating the interface?”
Ryun shrugged. “In a few hours. I want to take care of some things first.”
Anrosh gave him a long look. “People in town have all received rewards. I assume that you have as well?”
Ryun tilted his head. He hadn’t realized that everyone had received rewards. “I did. What did the people get?”
Anrosh narrowed her eyes when she saw that he didn’t answer what he got, but she spoke a moment later. “Most got Essence, the amount depending on their contribution. The people who stayed inside the walls and took care of facilities, food, and water, got between 50 and 100 Greater Essence each. Warriors got between 150 and 500 Greater Essence. And everyone got a title.”
Ryun raised an eyebrow. “Really? What title?”
“The title is called Pillar of Community, and it gave them an extra 200 Greater Essence and plus 3 to all stats,” Anrosh said.
Ryun’s face fell in disappointment. That was nothing special. Anrosh noticed his look and spoke.
“That title is huge. Most of these people had very few titles, some even had none. It might not seem so great to you, but for other people the Essence and that title together are worth everything. They could level or advance in their Cultivation, and many of our warriors will get out of this scenario much stronger.”
“If you say so,” Ryun said. He could see why it would be good for people who were weak, but it wasn’t impressive to him.
“I didn’t get that title,” Anrosh added. “I got something else.”
“Oh?” Ryun asked with a tilt of his head.
“I received a title called First Pillar. Apparently, my contribution was greater than anybody else's—aside from yours, of course. I got a five percent bonus to all my stats, and 5,000 Greater Essence.”
“Congratulations,” Ryun told her. At least someone had gotten something useful, and the Essence would allow her to cycle more for her next advancement.
She narrowed her eyes at him. “That isn’t strange to you at all, is it?”
“What?”
“The bonus that gave a percentage. I suspected that you had some powerful titles—most Rankers do—but the titles that give percentage bonuses were the rarest, and the most powerful.”
“Ah. Well, yes, I do have titles that give such bonuses.”
Anrosh looked unsure for a moment, but then she seemed to find her nerve. “How many? If you don’t mind me asking.”
Ryun wasn’t really keeping it a secret, although he didn’t want to properly show her his titles. He didn’t think that she would react well to some of them. “With the title I received as a reward for this scenario, I now have three such titles.”
Anrosh blinked at him, and then shook her head. She didn’t speak for a long moment, and then she turned around. “Find me when you decide on activating the interface. I’ll go and organize the people. We should prepare for expansion.”
Ryun watched her go. Hearing her mention the expansion reminded him that the people of this town were still living in temporary buildings. They were waiting to finish the scenario in order to build permanent ones. Even this building that Ryun was in was temporary, although it was almost a mansion. The previous leader had been…wasteful. Ryun shook his head and turned his attention elsewhere. He walked over to the table in the center of the room and jumped on top of it, then sat down with his legs crossed. It wasn’t the most perfect spot for what he intended, but it was good enough. First, he took out the rack with four bottles filled with different liquids, and looked at them.
Vial of Light
Shaking the bottle lightly makes it emit a pale light to illuminate darkness. Can shine light for six hours before needing recharging. Placing the vial in direct sunlight for six hours will recharge it.
Vial of Shadow
Opening the cork will allow darkness to escape, engulfing an area of ten meters around the bottle in complete darkness for fifteen minutes. Can be used three times before needing to be recharged. Will be recharged by being exposed to complete darkness for three days.
Core Purifying Elixir
Consuming the elixir will strip a Cultivator’s core of its aspect, at a price of lowering the Cultivator’s core capacity by 10%.
Core Reinforcement Elixir
Consuming the elixir will add 10% more capacity to the Cultivator’s core as well as 10% more Qi density.
Ryun was impressed by all four items. Each was extremely useful. The Vial of Shadow was particularly interesting to him—since he didn’t need to see in darkness to be able to feel his opponents, it could come in handy. And he could see a use for the others as well.
He put them back in his storage, only now placing them inside of the small space in his core, the space that he’d received thanks to his Void Forged Core perk. The space wasn’t all that large, just about the size of a small cabinet, but it was enough for a few of his more important items.
Finally, he turned to his Cultivation. He took a deep breath and put enough Essence in to fill his core, and then triggered the advancement. He felt his core burn as Essence was being converted into Qi. His core constricted, then expanded, not quite reaching the same size, but he could feel his Qi getting stronger. Then the burning spread through his Qi conduits, burning everything, and then the burning stopped. For a moment, he felt the wall in his head shake, but then it stilled. Ryun frowned, focusing on it, making sure that the presence didn’t leave and try to take control again. But when nothing happened, Ryun turned aside and looked at the changes. His entire Qi system was reforged. Immediately, he looked at his notifications.
Congratulations, you have reached the Early Monarch Realm Stage on the Path of the Final End!
Reward—Aspect Manifestation perk! You have stepped into the Realm of the Monarchs, and as such you now have a greater control over your aspect. You may choose in which way that control manifests.
Ryun looked through the other notifications. He’d received a stat increase of 30 to all stats, which was substantial, and had also received a new title: Monarch, and with it a bonus of 10 to all stats and 1,000 Greater Essence. The title reward was underwhelming, but he had expected it once Anrosh told him of her own title. He wasn’t the first to achieve the Monarch Realm in this world, just one of many.
Finally, he turned to the rest of his notifications.
Cultivation Bonus (+20%)
Gain +40% effectiveness to all of your Qi related effects.
He looked at his techniques and, as expected, saw that all of his current effects were now increased by an additional 40% of their base value. His cycling had so far only increased by 10% per Realm, but it added up. This was the first time that it had given him 20% bonus. He glanced at his last window.
Path Perk available: Aspect Manifestation
Void Cloak
By manifesting a Qi aspect in the shape of a cloak, the Cultivator is able to completely erase their own signature and make themselves immune to most sensory powers. The cloak also provides limited protection from both physical and power attacks. It holds all the aspects of the Void; the strength of the Void effects depends on the Qi Cultivation of the Cultivator, aspect tier, and advancement. Looking at a Cultivator engulfed in the Void Cloak is the same as looking into nothingness: an empty void in space.
Void Orb
By manifesting a Qi aspect in the shape of an orb, the Cultivator compresses his Qi into a destructive or defensive tool. The Void Orb orbits the Cultivator and can move anywhere in a five-meter range of the Cultivator, and is controlled by the Cultivator’s thoughts. It holds all aspects of the Void; the strength of the Void effects depends on the Qi Cultivation of the Cultivator, aspect tier, and advancement. Looking at the Orb would be the same as looking into nothingness: an empty void in space.
Void Aura
By manifesting your Qi aspect in the form of an aura, the Cultivator creates a field around themselves filled with Void Qi in a radius depending on the Cultivator’s Qi output. Activating the aura at a three-meter radius around the Cultivator takes 15% of total Qi supply, plus 5% every second after. Increasing the range by one meter requires an additional 10% of total Qi supply. Increasing the intensity of the effect costs 5% of total Qi supply for every 10% in effect increase. Using Void Qi techniques will cost 10% less Qi while the aura is active. Everything inside the field will suffer the eroding effects of the Void. Strength of effect and costs are adjusted depending on the Qi Cultivation of the Cultivator, Qi density, and advancement.
Ryun looked at his choices with a hungry look in his eyes. He remembered what the three bosses had shown him. The Leshy had created some kind of bark armor that could move on its own. The Molten King’s was more subtle, but Ryun believed his aspect manifestation to be the way he could heal and change his body, or maybe the shell he could create. But the Yeti had the one that had impressed Ryun the most: the aura of Absolute Cold. It had sapped Ryun’s strength, and it had been powerful enough to damage him. Immediately he was drawn to the choice that allowed him to do the same thing, but he pulled back and looked at the choices again. The cloak would synergize incredibly well with his existing perks; he was already nearly undetectable, he made no sound and he could move through the air without making any noise. With the cloak, he would have something like true stealth.
Void Orb was interesting as well. It would be a purely combat option, which would let him catch his opponents off guard. In the end, though, he didn’t necessarily need it, not with his techniques, and if he managed to evolve {Avatar} a bit more, he would have something even better.
Void Aura was the option that made the most sense, and so he picked it. Immediately he smiled as he checked the perk. His cycling had paid off again, as all the costs were adjusted.
Aspect Manifestation: Void Aura
By manifesting your Qi aspect in the form of an aura, the Cultivator creates a field around themselves filled with Void Qi in a radius depending on the Cultivator’s Qi output. Activating the aura at a three-meter radius around the Cultivator takes 12% (15%) of total Qi supply, plus 4% (5%) every second after. Increasing the range by one meter requires an additional 6.4% (8%) of total Qi supply. Increasing the intensity of the effect costs 4% (5%) of total Qi supply for every 10% in effect increase. Using Void Qi techniques will cost 14% (10%) less Qi while the aura is active. Everything inside the field will suffer the eroding effects of the Void. Your body has been reforged into your true self, adopting attributes to reflect your path. Your path is that of the ultimate end of all things, and as such no force can truly exert influence on you. Any power attempting to exert influence over you does so at a reduced effect. You walk alone, untethered from the natural laws of the universe, bringing the end to those in your way.
Indomitable (Title Perk)
You are immune to all mind-altering effects from opponents that are on a lower tier of power than you.
Reaper’s Aura (Title Perk)
You can no longer be scanned by any abilities, techniques, or skills from people who are on the same or lower tier of power than you. You may manifest the Reaper’s Aura, filling all within your presence with dread.
Great Hunter (Contract Perk)
Any person whose blood you have drawn is marked by your power. The mark allows you to track them no matter the distance between you.
Shadow’s Favorite (Bond Perk)
When standing in shadows, your form blends in the surrounding. Strength of effect depends on the depth of the bond with the awakened object and the darkness of shadow.
