Kate Warne's Sister Is Missing, page 30
There’s a movement, and I turn to see George crouch down behind Jake. “Home,” he echoes. “Say a prayer.” He raises his beer to his mouth, and takes a long swig.
Then, voice deep and cracking, he starts to sing.
When Johnny comes marching home again/ Hurrah! Hurrah!/ We’ll give him a hearty welcome then/ Hurrah! Hurrah!
Others, celebrating near, hear George and approach, already singing.
The men will cheer and the boys will shout/ The ladies they will all turn out/ And we’ll all feel gay/ When Johnny comes marching home.
George is bellowing now. They all are. They weep and sing. We’re into the second stanza about church bells pealing and roses strewing…and I swear I can hear them across the river, joining in, hearts pouring out.
Rockets boom. Voices sing louder.
And we’ll all feel gay/ When Johnny comes marching home.
From the Author
Hi, and thank you for reading. If you enjoyed this book, I’d so love it if you would leave a review on Amazon. Your feedback would mean the world to me.
If you’re familiar with my books, you might be wondering why I veered off from contemporary crime/psychological thrillers to this story. It’s because Kate Warne’s been too lost to history, and I felt fired to bring her back. Also Hattie Lawton…such brave, brave women when others were discouraged from even stepping out of their homes!
I’m a former writer at Newsweek. What led me to writing there was previous – and sometimes wild – experience studying in Paris, then being an exchange student in the Soviet Union where I promptly got arrested for spreading anti-Soviet propaganda. (Friends & I were caught laughing at their pea-green-colored drinking water. For more, read here on Goodreads.) More trouble came after that, whew. I think the Soviets were glad to see me go.
Now things are calmer. When not writing, I’m usually thinking about writing and dreaming up new stories, and can rarely be found without my trusty laptop.
I live with my family in Connecticut, love gardening, and am working on my next thriller.
I’d also love to hear from you. Here’s my Facebook page, and please follow me on my Amazon Author page. Would you also like to sign up for my newsletter on my website?
Readers ask me to write faster. I’ll try.
Huge thanks again for reading!
