Augustus removed a bottle of beer from the pocket of his overcoat and, with a grin, set it on the table next to Ian. “And some alcohol.”

Nicole carried a brown pastry box. “I brought your favorite cheesecake.”

Ian adjusted the pillow behind his back and straightened. “I should get hit in the head more often.”

Tony had a cooler in his hand and he unzipped the top of it and removed a large pan of lasagna. “I’ll find a place to warm this up and then we’ll fill that empty stomach of yours.”

Nicole, with her dark hair flowing around her shoulders, sat on the foot of the bed. “We devised a plan to sneak the Corgis in to see you, but at the last minute, we realized it would never work. So Bear and Lady had to send their love to you and hope you’re out of here soon.”

“Tell those magnificent animals thank you and I’ll see them tomorrow.”

Nicole said, “Oh, and Robby had a class so he couldn’t come with us, but he’s making you a batch of chocolate-caramel cookies and will deliver them to you tomorrow.”

At the visitors’ request, Ian told the story of Ambrose’s attack on him and how Claire had saved him.

“I really didn’t.” Claire pushed a strand of hair from Ian’s forehead.

“You certainly did,” Ian said. “Your quick thinking and self-defense skills saved the day ... and my life.”

“Hmm,” Claire leaned over and gave Ian a kiss. “I’ll have to think of a way you can repay me.”

Claire had already planned to visit Bob Cooney at the South End bar he frequented to thank him for giving her the tips to use on an attacker. She was even going to bring him a sampler of desserts from the chocolate shop to show her gratitude.

Tony walked back in with a warmed plate of lasagna for Ian. “If you ask nicely, you often get what you need. A very kind nurse helped me get the food warmed up.” He put a towel over Ian’s chest and set the plate on the wheeled table that could be pushed up right over Ian’s lap.

“It smells awfully good in here.” A tall, athletic, sandy-haired man stepped into the hospital room and when he saw the group gathered around Ian, he offered to return later.

“This is Dr. Foley, my neurologist.” Ian introduced the doctor to his friends and when Foley shook hands with Nicole, his eyes almost bugged from their sockets.

“Why don’t you go ahead and eat,” Dr. Foley suggested and then he eagerly started a conversation with Nicole while the others chattered away at Ian.

Sitting next to her boyfriend while he enjoyed his lasagna, Claire watched the sparks fly between her best friend and the neurologist.

  Fate, chance meetings.

A little smile formed over Claire’s mouth as the neurologist beamed at Nicole and Nicole’s eyes sparkled at the good-looking, young doctor.

  Fortune’s wheel was turning.
