  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

  1 : TIME

  ARABELLA

Time was running out. The school year was over. Summer was giving way to autumn and the trees were shedding their first colorful leaves. Days spent in the non-human world were filled with good moods and unexpected adventures. I spent the entire summer at Savannah’s house in Hemorid. It is a residence for werewolves located in a large forest. It is strange to see a place covered in trees, with impressive wooden houses, many staircases, and a river flowing nearby. I never thought I would love a place with so many mosquitoes flying around and a million bugs underfoot. Bob and Astrid are the warmest people I have ever met in this world: a werewolf and a vampire who started a family and ended up with Savannah. Astrid is in her mid-forties, raising their second daughter, while Bob was the town’s chief captain. Although they didn’t have to take me into their home, they did so by welcoming me with open arms as if I were their daughter. They proudly showed me the place, the most important areas, the oldest legends, and the most vital rules.

It has been a long time since I last saw Aunt Persia. After the last conversation and the return of my memories, she chose the path of the fugitive. She’d promised to keep in touch through letters and Letty. So she is still a wanted felon, and it seems everyone wanted to bring her back between the four walls of the prison. As the days rushed by, I managed to tame the burning anger that I had to live most of my life alone. Forgiveness seemed to be the most appropriate option. You see, Aunt Persia did everything in her power to protect me from the world of supernatural beings. From the fate that awaited me. The yellow pendant glittering on my neck still sends strange, powerful signals, as if a light aura has enveloped my body, and I feel much stronger constantly. I feel full of energy. I don’t complain about the quality of my sleep, and in my true wolf form, I can control my body very well, although, of course.

The only thing that made me happy was that I will be able to see Logan again. Until we are together again, we communicate by letter because it was very rare for him to come to this place. Every day, our bond gets stronger. We have become very close, more than friends, but less than a couple. That warm feeling in my chest makes the corners of my lips rise and my heart beat faster. Having all the memories, all the conversations, and all the moments spent together in my memory makes this one so special and unforgettable.

Let us move on to another subject that has been on my mind for a long time. How can I have a sister? In the memories my aunt brought back to me, I did not get to see any little girl near me. Having a sister who is older and cares for you is one thing, but having a twin who probably looks identical and is as dark as night on the inside is quite another. According to my aunt, Kaytlin was born one day early, with unexpected complications, and we were separated by exactly twenty-four hours. Meanwhile, my twin was taken to the special care unit before I was ready to come out. It is hard to believe these stories and words, and it is hard to believe that I have a twin sister who killed our parents. According to Aunt Persia, my father, Gregor, was a Soulless, and his mission was simple, to kill the strongest werewolf, my mother. Fate took a different turn, forcing them to fall in love. So my father protected my mother for many years from the forces of darkness trying to get to her, protecting her, and betraying his true origins and incantations. Even though they managed to hide from the darkness for many years, and my mother managed to gather a lot of information about Soulless, fate put an end to it. It must have been damn painful to die of your own flesh and blood. Months of searching bore no fruit. Although it was indirect, Marco promised to find more information about Kaytlin. The consequences were endless, as if such a person did not exist on the face of the earth. From the other side, it is unsurprising that she was hiding somewhere in the dark shadows, waiting for the right moment to strike.

Marco and his father guard the primary gateway to this world. This is dangerous, as legend has it, that a dragon must die first before the destruction of this world can begin. But this was the price of sacrifice that must happen to see if evil is still in the human world or has finally destroyed itself. In the last fifteen years, there has been no attack on the strongest supernatural beings, or rather Marco and Harold, his father. One detail after another reaches my ears, making me wonder more and more about the world around me. Only the two strongest supernatural beings, the vampires and the witches, remain a secret. Although I have not seen Marco with a supernatural relic, I am convinced his father, Harold, has it. However, it may also belong to his other three sons, who are currently in charge of accepting and admission to the Moon Academy in different parts of the world. Meanwhile, all the other dragons are learning teleportation skills, trying to find themselves, control the elements, fly, and a manor of other little things. I hope that one day I will have the opportunity to visit these wonderful creatures, learn more about them and admire them up close.

“Arabella, it’s time for us to travel.” Savannah’s voice came from the other side of the door.

I lazily pushed myself up from the queen-sized bed, grabbing the two suitcases parked nearby. A few steps later, I opened the door, and Savannah was standing behind it, looking at me with a big smile. Time to go back to Moon Academy, where I will spend another year learning the intricacies, secrets, and knowledge of werewolves.

“Let me help you.” Savannah reached out her hand to take my suitcase, lifting it easily and walking up the narrow staircase to the first floor.

In the bright living room set below, two familiar faces are waiting for us. Bob and Astrid stood with teary eyes. With a few hugs and a feeling of longing in my chest, I will truly miss these two wonderful people who gave me a home.

“Send your owl when you go.” Astrid hugged her gently, and there was sadness in her voice.

“Don’t let the third years hurt you and don’t get into trouble.” Bob clapped Savannah on the shoulder, looking at his daughter with pride.

“Dad, Mom, I’ll see you very soon. Take care of each other.” Savannah waved as she stepped over the threshold.

“Thanks for everything Bob, Astrid.” I smiled as I dragged the suitcase across the threshold.

That left Bob and Astrid behind as we stepped forward and down the small path leading out of the backyard. A gentle breeze carried the freshness of the woods around, and a bustle arose nearby. The road leads ahead along a small track, then onto the main street for one last look at the beautiful houses and the expanse of woodland. We are not alone in heading this way towards the train station. It is the only means of transport to this place. Nearby, parents are chatting with their children, probably first-year students. One acquaintance, a face in dark clothes and a hoodie, was Hector, who stepped in front. A wide road led ahead, in front of a large gray building, a subway train station, and tracks stretching in two directions behind it.

“What do you think this year will bring us?” Savannah grinned broadly as she looked up at the cloudy sky.

“I hope this year will be much calmer than the last. We’ve solved all the riddles and found all the parts.” The corner of my lips turned up at the memory of the last school year.

“This year, there will be a lot more combat training, and we will rarely spend time inside the academy. The main lectures should take place in wolf form.” Savannah stomped on the spot without hiding her enthusiasm.

Truth be told, I was a little worried. Even though we’d spent a lot of time in our wolf forms over the summer, becoming closer to the wolf inside of us gave me the strangest chills in my body. The thought of Kiara behaving strangely disturbed me, as if she had completely pushed me away and closed herself off in her world. It made me feel sad. Is that how Hector feels? Not hearing his wolf in his head, often in lycan form, that’s what makes him unique. It’s why he seemed so sad and distressed during the first lecture. When the students in the class were able to interact with the wolves, he felt lonely, a distance from his wolf. Perhaps the lycan form is not so peculiar after all? My gut feeling doesn’t fool me that soon I will be able to be like him. The lycan form manifests during the first blue full moon, which occurs a generation a year. If the werewolf has mastered his second form sufficiently and knows how to displace his wolf, during this full moon, it is as if a wall is erected inside, enclosing the wolf on the other side during the entire change of form. The wolf’s voice can then only be heard in the human form, and what if, even then, the wolf ignores it because it feels betrayed and hurt?

The underground door, the ticket fee, and the huge iron train in front. The loudspeakers announcing departure, the way in, and the soft seats. Suitcases stacked over our heads, a window seat, and a glimpse of the gray clouds gathering in the sky. Slowly, the train moves forward, soon gaining momentum. Savannah took out her headphones and phone, probably to take advantage of the technology before having to put them to one side. I turned my gaze to the cool glass, watching the forests give way to high mountains and the landscape melt into each other. My eyelids felt heavy, but I didn’t want to fall asleep for fear that the nightmare will ruin the quality of my sleep again. Repeatedly making my body break out in a cold sweat, and a scream escapes my lips in a state of shock each time. The memories that were brought back have a positive and a negative meaning. As long as I can enjoy the memories of Logan, one image will not fade from my memory: my parents’ burning car and a little girl standing behind the flames.

Every few days, I have the same nightmare. Running forward through a crowd of people on short legs. I hear weeping and shouting all around me. I see the sad faces of the people, the paramedics rushing with bloody hands, and the police officers cordoning off the scene with wide yellow tape. My chest heaves, and my lungs almost give out in the rush forward until, finally, I stop, unable to run on. In front of my eyes, fiery flames rise upwards, a gray car of which the likes are just a piece of metal. The bloody bodies of my parents, the blue hands, the faces without signs of life, and the pain ripping through my chest. A scream wanting to escape my lips, my body in shock, my knees touching the cold blood, and my face overflowing with pain and emptiness. The next moment, a light hand lands on my shoulder, forcing my gaze away from the burning machine. I stare blankly at a girl the same age as me, her dark violet eyes shining only with a deep black emptiness. The girl’s short black hair reaches her shoulders, her tattered clothes, her hands as cold as ice, her skin a shade of purple, and the one word that left her lips and brought me back to the world of reality—sister.

Why did my dreams distort my memories? Could it mean something? It was just a fact that the past has found me, just as fate has decided not to let me escape and live a normal life. In a few years, when I am strong enough, I will be able to look into my twin’s eyes, and at that time, no scream of fear will come from my lips, but only an angry gaze will be fixed on her, blaming her for the childhood and the life she has taken away. A sigh leaves my lips; I can’t wait to get back to the academy. I feel so much safer within those magical walls than I do wandering somewhere in this world. Headmistress Eitana has told me not to worry, assuring me that Soulless has no honor to cross from one world to another. All this was ensured by the powerful spells once left by Selene herself to ensure peace of mind for the supernatural beings who live here. The first place I would visit was the headmistress’s office, who has written me a letter mentioning that she has important information to give me when I arrive at the academy. I understand perfectly well why she could not have done this earlier. After the events of the first year, the headmistress wanted my mind to be free and my body to relax and enjoy my free time, or rather, my holidays.

The journey is short; the train stops at the major station in Orlando, and it is not a long journey from there. Suitcases in hand, a short walk back through the station, and here are the white streets of the city and the sound of waterfalls somewhere in the distance. It’s so strange to be back here. My heart swells with longing for this city and fresh adventures.

“Before we head towards the academy, let’s stop by the shop. I need some notebooks.” Savannah nodded her head towards the fork in the road.

I nodded in agreement; the city of Orlando was as familiar as the fingers on my hand: one main street and four major districts. The first district is for the shops: clothes, animals, magic herbs, and other items. The second district consists of residential buildings, mainly located on the city’s outskirts. The third district is the place of the statutes, the Palace of Truth, the police, the fire station, and other important offices. The fourth district is full of bars, dark shops, and other dirty things. It is advisable not to stay long if you don’t want to get into trouble.

I stopped at the entrance to the shop while Savannah went inside to take care of the missing items. Raindrops began to fall from the sky one by one, spoiling the mood and spreading the music around. Ahh, shit, it probably couldn’t be a better day. Umbrella? Of course, there isn’t one. I walked into the shop, hoping to find one, but I left with Savannah, full of disappointment.

“The city of Orlando does welcome returning students.” Savannah’s voice held a drop of sarcasm.

“Come on, let’s go.” I grabbed Savannah’s hand and dragged her out from under the roof above the store.

“Girl, do you need help?” Lee’s voice sounded somewhere in the distance.

“My rain cover.” Savannah started to run towards Lee, who was waving his hand under a small red umbrella.

Yes, over the summer, Savannah and Lee had become very fierce. Although I wouldn’t call them a couple, as Savannah still tries to keep her distance and doesn’t trust anyone one hundred percent, Lee has completely lost his head over her. The glances, which at the beginning seemed towards her being a meal, became warm and full of concern. Savannah hugged Lee briefly, then both of their gazes turned to me.

“Are you coming with us, or are you going to stay there?” Lee’s eyebrows rose, and his eyes shone with mocking flames.

“She’s with me,” Logan’s voice rang out on the other side.

A smile instantly lit up my face. My knight in shining armor, a man who always rescues me from awkward situations. Giving his heart as a child and always looking out with those piercing eyes with which the universe sparkles. My attention drifted to the man standing under a black umbrella, wearing a black short-sleeved shirt and a wide smile on his face. A couple of steps forward into the rain, and my arms wrapped tightly around Logan’s sturdy body. His hand landed lightly on my waist and lifted me into the air, turning in a small circle.

“Eyy, take it easy; you’re going to crush me. Did you miss me?” Logan giggled, letting go of my torso and finding my hand.

“I haven’t seen you in months since the last time you visited. Of course I missed you.” I smiled broadly and snuggled closer to Logan.

“Do you have plans tonight?” Logan glanced at me out of the corner of his eye.

“Is it a date?” A question left my lips.

“Of course, it’s a date. We have two more days before the school year starts, and I thought it spending a few days just the two of us would be fun. You know, make up for the time we didn’t have during the summer holidays.” The corner of Logan’s lips turned up, and his gaze drifted to the base of the large bridge ahead.

“Yes, yes, yes!” I squealed. “Where are we going?” I glanced at Logan.

“You know I can’t tell you everything. It’s a secret, Ella.” Logan winked and shook his head. “I’ll meet you in the main hall at six o’clock.” Logan’s hand squeezed my waist tighter.

“Great, now tell me what you did those days when I couldn’t reach you.” My eyebrow rose.

“Ahh, my mother has become a real conniving monster. I couldn’t go back to the human world to visit my dad, as I mentioned at our last meeting. Day after day, I had to follow the vagrant white and black magic training. Mastery of the elements, a strict daily routine, and poor sleep. I notice that my mother is very focused on ensuring I have a successful third year at the academy and that I am one step ahead of my classmates.” A sigh left Logan’s lips.
