Then Derwin’s eyes narrowed. He frowned. “Under what capacity would this be under? A favor? Or something more official that we will be paid for?” He didn’t say anything for a bit, but his free hand clenched into a fist. Elliot shivered, and Derwin nodded. “I’m with my partner. We can be there in an hour. Thanks.” He hung up and pocketed the phone.
For a moment, Derwin seemed lost in thought. Elliot cleared his throat. “I’ll tell Lacey practice is over, and get my stuff.” Before Elliot could open the door to the dojo, Derwin grabbed his wrist.
His heart stuttered. The look on Derwin’s face was one he hadn’t seen in quite a while—not since they’d been investigating Grady’s killer.
Oh no. He’s not going into that mode again, is he? The one where his objective is everything, and I am nothing?
Derwin smiled, and let go, and Elliot’s fear passed. “Wentley says two bodies were discovered earlier today who were shot between the eyes like Cole Murphy. He’s asked for our help to investigate.” Opening the door, he allowed Elliot to enter first.
“‘We’?” Elliot echoed, just to make sure he’d heard correctly. Why would Wentley want him involved? Or was that Derwin who was insisting that they work together?
Lacey stood by Elliot’s bag with a puzzled frown. Nodding to her reassuringly, Elliot grabbed his bag.
“That’s right—we. You’re ready for us to handle a case together, regardless of how tough it is.” Derwin sounded proud, and Elliot couldn’t help the warm flush the compliment gave him. He’d fought hard enough for it.
He hurried to the restroom to remove his gi, and pulled on a hoodie to go with his sweatpants and tennis shoes. A new investigation, then. Teaming up with the police.
This should get interesting.
Elliot grinned. “Working together. That sounds like a plan.”

I’d also like to acknowledge my partner for her insights into the kidnapping plotline, and also for being my voice of reason.
