Chapter 1
James hurried down the wintry forest trail, his breath forming clouds of mist in the cold air.
He was following Astra, who flew overhead. The Dragonkin’s wings beat powerfully as she guided him through the frost-glazed landscape. The chill seemed irrelevant to her, her scales and feathers providing ample protection from the elements.
As they delved deeper into the woods, the snow-covered branches overhead formed a canopy, blocking out the sun. James’s thoughts raced; his mind filled with questions about the elusive werebunny they had been tracking for such a long time.
Suddenly, Astra landed gracefully on the ground next to James, her purple eyes gleaming with excitement.
“We’re here,” she announced, her voice breathless.
James glanced around, trying to locate the pit trap they had painstakingly dug and magically camouflaged.
Astra, sensing his confusion, pointed to a barely discernible indentation in the snow. “It’s just over here, James.”
Together, they approached the edge of the pit trap. As they drew nearer to the pit, Astra quickly dispelled the enchantment that camouflaged it, revealing the pit. James’s heart pounded in his chest as he noticed the trap had indeed been sprung.
His excitement grew as he prepared to look inside.
Had they finally captured their elusive quarry?
Peering over the edge, he saw a pair of big red eyes staring back at him.
The naked creature inside appeared small and vulnerable. When James caught sight of snow-white hair with two big bunny ears and a pair of red eyes, realization struck him like a bolt of lightning.
“Sylla?” he whispered; his eyes wide as he processed the sight before him.
Of course, it was Sylla. It all made sense when he thought about it. Bashful but sweet, and according to the townsfolk — Ms. Sleaney had made a point of telling him — she often disappeared for days at a time. No one in town actually knew what she did for a living.
James grinned.
Apparently, she does whatever it is that a werebunny does for a living, he mused.
Astra looked equally shocked as she studied the captured creature.
“This is a girl from the town, isn’t it?” she murmured, her haughty demeanor giving way to surprise.
James nodded.
For a moment, neither of them spoke as they absorbed the revelation that one of the townswomen had been the werebunny they had been seeking all along. The creature now huddled in the bottom of the pit, frightened and trapped.
James noticed how Sylla’s red eyes glistened with unshed tears, and he couldn’t help but feel a twinge of pity for her. He glanced at Astra, who, despite her earlier excitement, seemed to share his concern.
Now James understood why Sylla always wore hats and puffy coats whenever he saw her. She had been hiding her bunny ears and her cute little bunny tail.
As she looked up at him from the bottom of the pit, her red eyes big, he couldn’t help but wonder…
Why had she been watching them for such a long time?
James and Astra stood on either side of the pit trap, extending their hands to assist Sylla as she clambered out of the hole with some difficulty.
Her lithe, shivering body was exposed to the wintry air, her delicate, pale skin offering no protection against the biting cold.
Despite her current predicament, James’s eyes were drawn to the luscious curves that accentuated her full form and the supple muscles of her thick thighs. Sylla’s beauty was undeniable, and her vulnerability in this moment only seemed to enhance it.
Once she was out, James quickly wrapped his coat around her trembling shoulders, attempting to provide warmth and modesty.
Sylla gratefully accepted the offered garment, clutching it tightly around her as she took a seat on a nearby stump. Her bunny ears drooped slightly, as if weighed down by the uncomfortable situation she found herself in.
“Alright, Sylla,” James began, his voice firm but gentle. “We need to know why you’ve been watching us for such a long time.”
Astra folded her arms across her chest, her purple eyes narrowing as she gazed at Sylla.
“Indeed,” she growled in draconic fashion. “You owe us an explanation.”
Sylla hesitated, her red eyes darting between James and Astra. Her fingers fumbled with the edge of the coat, betraying her nerves.
“I... I never meant any harm,” she began, her voice barely above a whisper. “It all started with Kesha.”
“Kesha?” James repeated, puzzled.
Sylla nodded. “She was hunting bunnies in the hills, and... and I love those little creatures. I couldn’t let her hurt them.”
Her gaze dropped to her feet. “So, I decided to chase her away, to protect my furry friends. I hoped that if I just watched her from the undergrowth, she would become scared and go away.”
James couldn’t suppress a chuckle. “Well,” he muttered. “You certainly succeeded at that.”
“But how did you end up watching us?” Astra asked, her tone demanding yet laced with curiosity.
“Well,” Sylla admitted, fiddling with a loose strand of her white hair. “As I followed Kesha, I saw her with you, James, and the other women. And, um, I just... became intrigued.” She shrugged, a sheepish smile on her face. “I don’t really know why I kept watching. It just... happened.”
James and Astra exchanged glances, each assessing the sincerity of Sylla’s words. The werebunny appeared genuine in her admission, her awkwardness almost endearing.
James fixed his eyes on Astra, who affirmed his words with a nod, he
“I think we should take her with us to the house,” Astra said. “The others have a right to answers as well.”
James sighed, running a hand through his hair.
“There was no harm in it,” he conceded. “But there could have been.” He gave Sylla a pointed look. “A lot of things could’ve gone wrong.”
Sylla nodded, her eyes wide and filled with understanding.
“I realize that now,” she admitted, her voice trembling slightly. “I never thought about the consequences of my actions. I just... acted on instinct.”
Her red eyes met James’s, sincerity shining through her vulnerability. “I owe you all an explanation, and I’m willing to face everyone and tell them my story. It’s the least I can do after causing so much trouble.”
James shared a meaningful glance with Astra, seeking her approval.
Astra hesitated for a moment before nodding in agreement, her arms still crossed.
“Very well, then,” she said, her voice firm yet less aggressive than before. “We’ll take you back with us.”
Sylla gave a small, appreciative smile, her bunny ears perking up ever so slightly.
“Thank you,” she whispered, her gaze dropping to the ground once more, as if to shield herself from their scrutiny.
Chapter 2
James, Astra, and Sylla entered the house, finding the other women — Sara, Lucy, Corinne, Kesha, Hind, and Lunesca — gathered around the table, enjoying their breakfast.
The atmosphere in the room shifted as all eyes turned toward the new arrival.
Sylla, wrapped only in James’s coat, appeared small and vulnerable amidst the curious gazes. Her beautiful body was barely concealed by the garment, with her shapely legs and thick thighs visible beneath the hem. The bunny ears atop her head twitched nervously as she tried to pull the coat tighter around herself, attempting to maintain some modesty.
James cleared his throat, drawing the attention of the others.
“Everyone, this is Sylla, the elusive werebunny we’ve been so curious about. She’s here of her own free will to explain why she’s been watching us.”
The room erupted with questions and exclamations, as the women tried to process the new information. They all spoke at once, their voices overlapping.
“Is she the one who’s been stalking us?” Lucy asked, concern furrowing her brow.
“How did you catch her?” Sara inquired; her yellow eyes wide with curiosity.
“A werebunny?” Lunesca questioned, her intelligent gaze locked on Sylla. “What an interesting creature!”
Meanwhile, Kesha’s eyes flashed with anger as she shot to her feet. “You let her in our house? She might be dangerous!”
But James raised a hand, signaling for silence. He knew he needed to establish control over the situation and give Sylla the opportunity to speak for herself.
“Let Sylla speak,” he said firmly, and the room fell quiet.
Sylla hesitated, her red eyes scanning the faces of the women who now stared at her with varying expressions.
She took a deep breath and began.
“It all started with Kesha,” Sylla said, directing her gaze at the fox girl, who narrowed her eyes. “You were hunting bunnies in the northern hills, and I couldn’t bear the thought of them being harmed.”
Kesha crossed her arms defensively. “So what? I was just hunting, like any other fox.”
Sylla’s eyes filled with a steely determination. “But you didn’t understand the impact of your actions on their families. I tried to drive you out of the northern hills to protect them.”
Hind’s wide, empathetic hazel eyes met Sylla’s. “You were trying to save the bunnies?”
“Yes,” Sylla confirmed. “But it wasn’t easy. Kesha is persistent, and she didn’t give up without a fight.”
A hint of bitterness crept into Sylla’s voice, revealing that she might still harbor a grudge.
Kesha sneered at the werebunny. “You’re just overreacting. It’s the circle of life. Predators hunt prey.”
Sylla’s eyes flashed with anger. “You killed some of my favorite bunnies, Kesha. I had been friends with them for a long time, and I knew them all by name. They had families, and they had a right to live.”
At her words, Kesha’s face twisted with rage, and she rose to her feet, fists clenched. “You can’t blame me for following my instincts! For being who I am!”
James stepped between the two, his arms outstretched in a calming gesture.
“Kesha, listen,” he said firmly. “Sylla is just explaining her side of the story. Stay calm, and let’s hear her out.”
With a reluctant nod, Kesha sat back down, her eyes still locked on Sylla, who swallowed hard before continuing.
As Sylla continued her explanation, her voice growing stronger with each word, Lunesca assessed the werebunny with her piercing blue gaze. Lucy offered a warm, encouraging smile, and Sara’s yellow eyes sparkled with curiosity.
“I never meant to cause any trouble,” Sylla said, her voice wavering. “I just wanted to protect the bunnies. But as I followed Kesha, I found her with all of you, and... I became intrigued. I don’t know why I kept watching, but I did.”
Sylla looked around the table, her gaze filled with remorse. “I’m so sorry for all the trouble I’ve caused. I never intended to hurt anyone or make you feel unsafe.”
Kesha crossed her arms, her lips pressed into a thin line. “You could have gotten us all killed,” she hissed, the white tips of her fox ears twitching with agitation.
James stepped forward, cutting off any further comments.
“Like I told Sylla before,” he said, silencing the many follow-up questions from his women. “No one was harmed, but things could’ve gone differently.”
He glanced at Sylla. “And it could’ve ended differently for you as well,” he added. “You were lucky that we decided to trap you and not kill you. Others in these circumstances might’ve camped out in the woods and hunted you.”
Sylla visibly started at those words, keeping her red eyes on him as she gave a timid nod.
“But let’s leave it behind us now,” James said, throwing Kesha a strong look that killed any objections on the fox girl lips.
For now…
As Sylla disappeared upstairs with Hind, who had offered to help her find some clothes, James turned his attention to the remaining women, all of whom seemed to have various thoughts and opinions about the situation.
He smiled broadly, seeing them on the edges of their seats, brimming with energy and eager to pepper him with questions.
He sat back and grinned. “All right… Let’s hear it,” he said.
Kesha, her eyes still burning with anger, crossed her arms defensively.
“I don’t see why we’re making such a fuss over her,” she huffed. “She’s been stalking us, and now she has the gall to judge me for my nature.”
Lucy, ever the optimist, chimed in. “But she said she was sorry, Kesha, and she only followed us because she was curious.”
Astra interjected, her draconic features radiating authority. “Regardless of her intentions, we must consider our next steps carefully. What do you propose we do with her, James?”
Before he could answer, Corinne added her thoughts, her green eyes softening with understanding.
“Well, maybe we can help her somehow,” she said. “It’s clear she loves the bunnies in the hills, and she was just trying to protect them.”
Sara’s yellow eyes danced as she considered the situation. “Well, why not let her stay here? We have room for one more, and it might be fun to get to know her better.”
Kesha immediately objected. “Are you out of your mind? She’s been spying on us, and you want to invite her to live here? She’s trouble.”
Lunesca, her piercing blue eyes reflecting her keen interest, offered an alternative perspective.
“I must admit, I am intrigued by the notion of learning more about Sylla and her kind. There were Shifters in the world of Tremare, but I never had the opportunity to encounter one personally. It would be fascinating to study their unique abilities.”
Kesha shook her head vigorously, crossing her arms.
“All right,” James said, raising his hands. “Let me think for a moment.”
He took a moment to consider the varied perspectives. He knew he needed to tread carefully here — Kesha was emotional in this case, and he didn’t want to upset her any more than she already was.
