I thrust my wand forward. “Let’s do this!”
He stood, let go of my hand, and planted a kiss on my forehead before pointing at his notebook. “The words have all been translated now.”
“We can do this; I know we can.”
He sent me that playful Elijah smile he was known for. “But first, we deserve a break, now that I’m out of hiding! We can sleep and play basketball and eat . . . and eat . . . and eat some more. And play basketball . . .”
“And eat some more!”
I grabbed his hand, and we ran downstairs and out the front door, all the way to his parents’ house, where we dribbled and dunked the basketball for the next few hours.
I won as many games as he did this time.
And I wouldn’t have had it any other way.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Writing this book has been nothing but a dream come true for me. As a young child in middle school, I stayed in the library. It was my safe space, my place to deal with the chaotic world I was born into. I used to love getting off the bus in the morning and heading to the library to read, sometimes missing breakfast. Ms. Fisher and Ms. Heller were my middle school librarians and transferred to high school with me. That time in my life was very hard for me, but books became my escape, and my love for middle grade novels was born then. I loved everything about reading as a child, and that love has inspired every novel that I have ever written.
I first want to thank Ms. Fisher and Ms. Heller, my childhood librarians. We didn’t have many librarians in our neighborhood, so school was the first place where I was able to foster my love of reading through Ms. Fisher’s and Ms. Heller’s love of reading. Both of you recognized me as a strong reader and would always give me suggestions on what to read next. Ms. Heller, I still remember you coming to my classroom and handing me books that you knew I wanted to read, saving multiple trips to the library. Ms. Fisher, I still remember you putting holds on the upcoming books that were coming to the library so that I would be the first one to read them. Both of you were my first inspirations—I haven’t found you both yet since I have moved away from my little town, but I cannot wait to gift this book to you when I meet you again.
To Caitie Flum, thank you for seeing the potential in this book from the beginning and helping me to get it published.
To Mary Kate Castellani, thank you for seeing the promise of this book before it was even written. You helped to get this book in the world just by reading a paragraph synopsis and helping to shepherd it through the offices at Bloomsbury to get it published.
To Camille Kellogg—you are the toughest editor I’ve ever worked with. Thank you for not allowing me to turn in something that wasn’t publishable. Thank you for making me write, edit, revise, write some more, delete whole passages, and then write some more. This book wouldn’t be in the spot it is in now if not for you.
Finally, I’d like to talk to my inner child, that child that needed help, that child that just wanted everything to be all right. I want you to know that one day you’ll be on the journey to being okay. It’s going to be a hard fight because you will have to go through all of the emotions of life on your own, but you’ll get there. I love you. And the world loves you and your words, too.
