Her hunsi waved Grant back and, stone-faced, they claimed her body, carrying it away toward the river. Kane turned toward Brigid and DeFore, who stood motionless, staring at him without really seeing him. It took him a couple of tries, but finally he spoke. "Whatever was going on here, I suppose it's over." Neither of the women replied or even acted as if they heard him. They looked toward the eastern sky, at the rising sun. It rose, swimming in cloud shadows the color of blood. Kane cleared his throat, following their gaze. "At least the sun finally came up." Brigid eyed him blankly. "Is that supposed to mean something good?" Taking DeFore by the arm, she walked slowly after the hunsi.
Kane looked toward the lurid red sky, desperately seeking an unshadowed sun.
