Guardian: Havard Chronicles, Book One: A Gamelit / Prison Planet / Harem Adventure, page 31
Toweling my hair dry, I paused as the door to the room clicked open and then closed, footsteps echoing off the solid wooden floor as they approached the bed.
With no weapon to hand, I slipped my undershorts on and prepared myself for some hand-to-hand combat. It was probably nothing, but I’d protect Kalia with my life if I had to.
“Kalia de Jaata…”
I paused, mere inches from rounding the divider, keen to hear what Ashmira had to say. With no immediate panic now, I started to pull on the rest of my clothes. She’d been absent these past few days, and I wondered if she’d reveal why.
“Congratulations on completing the first level. I honestly wasn’t sure you had it in you.”
“Right…” Kalia replied, her voice soft upon waking.
“I see you have surrounded yourself with others at last. Strength in numbers is good.”
“What of it?” Kalia asked.
The bed creaked as I assumed Ashmira had taken a seat.
“Nothing,” the red-horned woman replied with a tone that suggested nonchalance. “Just interesting that you chose Lunath’ii d’Arg of all people.”
OK. So, that was new.
“Why’s that interesting?” Kalia asked.
This was really confusing. What did Ashmira know about Luna? Why should she care who Kalia worked with?
“Lunath’ii is just another I have my eye on,” Ashmira revealed. “I shall enjoy tracking you both and watching your progress. Together, I feel there might be some surprises in your futures. I might even help you further.”
“How’ve you helped us?” Kalia asked, her tone suggesting this was irritating her.
“You don’t think the femurs were supposed to remain, do you?” The woman laughed, and I tried to shake the creepy feeling away that came with it. “And the moderate potions the hogs dropped? Come on now, Kalia…”
“It’s too early for this shit,” Kalia muttered, and I moved to join her, but then something registered, and I bit my lip to hold back a gasp.
The door. The footsteps. The creak of the bed.
Ashmira was actually here.
In the room.
Physically.
Holy shit…
Taking a deep breath, I walked around the divider, meeting Kalia’s eyes as I entered the room and smiling.
Ashmira followed the elf’s gaze, her eyes roaming over my body as I approached.
“Oh”—the red-horned woman ran a forked tongue over her ruby-red lips—“and who might you be now?”
