King of the Freaks
The worst part of my day at Rapetti. I’d forgotten how horrible it could be to find a seat in the caf. I had a place once — a seat next to Ben Fox, the king of Rapetti. For the first couple days back, I skipped lunch, but now that classes were on and I had to fight for my place as valedictorian, I had to eat properly again. So here I was: standing in the Rapetti cafeteria and scanning for an empty table.
I thought Year 13 would be different. I thought I’d have Ben. I thought I’d have Theo. But Ben had unleashed his “gag order” and Theo hadn’t spoken to me since Hope’s party. I just had to make it to a small table in the back, a small table with a wobbly leg in the back where I was used to eating alone as a Year 12.
We always had the best food the first week back after a long break to ease our minds before the caf returned to serving slop like fish and chips or potatoes and gravy. The tables were roughly the same. The randoms. The art freaks. The rugby boys. The popular girls. Bess graduated from art freak to one of Hope’s subjects, and Hope took Jess’s place as the queen of Rapetti.
When I walked into the caf, her entire table turned to look at me and then they burst into laughter and leaned over, whispering to themselves and laughing at me.
“Fat!” Millie yelled and the entire table laughed.
Hope smacked her.
“Stop,” Hope said loudly enough for me to hear, “Ben didn’t dump her because she’s fat. He dumped her because she’s horrible in bed.”
Bess laughed loudly, snorting like a piglet as I walked past. Hope grabbed my skirt as I walked past. I froze, ready to empty my cup of cranberry juice all over her fresh twist-out.
“Yes?”
“Hey, Liberty. We had a question for you.”
“No thanks. I want to eat lunch in peace.”
“That’s not an option.”
I could feel his eyes on me. He always watched from a distance, but he never intervened. I couldn’t tell if he wanted to or if he was just staring because he could. Because he was Ben Fox, and even if he let me go, a part of him would always want to own me.
“Where do poor people shop?” Hope asked, snickering afterward.
Millie smacked her sister on the arm.
“Stop! You’re such a bitch.”
“No, seriously. Yasmin’s working on a creative writing essay and since you’re poor, we want to know where poor people shop.”
“I don’t know. Walmart.”
“Ew!” Yasmin shrieked, like I’d suggested her fictional character rob graves for clothing, “That’s disgusting.”
“Yeah, well. It’s how most of the world lives.”
“We have another question,” Millie piped up.
I scowled.
“Why are you still alive?”
Amira and Charlotte snickered.
“Excuse me?”
“We think you ought to kill yourself. Your rich boyfriend dumped you, you’re a garbage friend and really, you have no one. So end it. Kill yourself.”
Millie snickered.
“Thanks for the advice.”
“Sorry, Libby. But we had to ask. I mean, you could always become a slut.”
“She’s already a slut,” Bess added.
“Good to see you again, Bess.”
I stormed off when I felt a thud on the back of my head. In surprise, I dropped my tray. Fuck. The mean girls burst into laughter and I felt another apple hit my head again. Everyone was laughing. Including the table of rugby guys. I couldn’t see Ben, but he was probably laughing too. I stood up and took one apple and I flung it at Hope’s head. I missed. Which only made everyone laugh even more.
I ran out of the cafeteria. I didn’t notice anyone follow me, but when I turned the corner. I felt a hand on my arm. A familiar grasp. I whipped around. Ben?
No. Not Ben. Barnaby Fox.
His uniform was crisp except for his tie, which he loosened. He had black liner smudged on his lower lid and unlike Ben, he never brushed or combed his long brown hair, which still had blond streaks from a wild summer. My ex-boyfriend’s twin brother clamped his hand around my arm.
“Walk with me.”
“Why?” I snapped.
“We need to talk.”
“I have nothing to say to you.”
I tried to pull free, but Arnie shared his brother’s strength and he dragged me around another corner to an isolated hallway. I freed myself and got ready to kick him in the balls and make an escape when Arnie asked softly, “Are you okay?”
“What the hell do you care?”
Arnie clamped his hand over my mouth. Tight.
“Hush, Liberty. If my brother finds me talking to you, he’ll have my bollocks.
He dropped his hand from my mouth and I snapped, “I should have bitten you.”
“Kiss me instead.”
“Shut up, Arnie.”
He grinned.
“Fine. Sorry. It’s been a while since I’ve had a woman’s touch.”
His smile sent a pang of pain rushing through my heart. It had been three weeks since I’d seen Ben’s smile. Since I’d seen him at all.
“What even happened between you and Hope?” I asked him.
I had to distract myself from thinking about Ben. I had to.
“She dumped me for trying to fuck her sister. I thought it was obvious.”
I rolled my eyes.
“You deserved that.”
“Yes. I did. But you don’t deserve torment.”
“I’m a Year 13. I need to get over it and man up.”
He laughed and shoved his hands into his pockets.
“I only wanted to make sure you were okay. If you’re still hungry, you can come sit with the art freaks.”
I raised an eyebrow.
“Are you sure?”
“My brother might be King of Rapetti, but I’m King of the Freaks. Come on.”
I followed Arnie back into the caf. This time, there was silence as we re-entered. He pulled out a chair for me at the art freaks table and went to get me lunch. No one dared say a word to him. The rumors were wrong, but everyone at school believed he was responsible for Chloe’s accidental death. Claire knew the truth, but I think she spread the rumors because that’s what she did — she gossiped. No one knew what happened to Jess. No one except me, Ben, and Theo.
And I would not talk if they wouldn’t. I still counted on Ben to keep my secret.
“Here’s your lunch, Libs. I talked the staff into giving me an extra apple.”
“Thanks.”
Arnie’s kindness was suspicious. I couldn’t tell if he wanted to make Ben mad on purpose, or if he was just being nice.
“So, meet the gang.”
“We already know each other,” Eugenie Sutcliffe said.
She was my new roommate. We barely spoke. She wore heavy makeup and had long brown hair with blunt bangs cut into the front. Her wide, sorrel colored eyes fixed on Arnie, who raised a curious eyebrow.
“Oh?”
“We’re roommates,” Eugenie and I said simultaneously.
“Very well. There’s Isla,” Arnie continued, pointing to a red-headed girl with chubby cheeks and freckles splattered all over her face.
“Louisa.”
“Aye,” Louisa responded, shoving a chip into her mouth. She had platinum blond hair, fried straight, and an aquiline nose.
“Zack.”
Zack didn’t look up. He had heavy hooded lids and black circles under his eyes. He had a black in fineliner pressed to a napkin as he drew a morbid scene of the grim reaper having sex with a large-breasted woman.
“And Marty.”
Marty, another dark-haired boy with black nail polish on his fingernails, grunted.
“Hey. I’m Libby.”
“We know who you are, princess,” Marty said, in a thick Scottish brogue, “Ben Fox’s latest slag.”
The table snickered until Arnie settled them with a stern glare.
“Can we talk about the rave around her?” Isla whispered, as if I couldn’t hear her.
Arnie nodded.
“She’s fine. She’s nothing like my brother.”
“Excellent,” Isla said, “So there’s this drain pipe a mile off campus and if we hook up speakers, we can have a party.”
“How much K can you get?” Louisa asked, nudging Zack in his side.
He shrugged.
“Fuck’s sake, can you pour water on his head?” Louisa snapped, her sharp temper and sudden tone causing me to sit up straight.
Arnie snapped his fingers in front of Zack’s face.
“He’s totally out of it.”
“Hold on,” Zack mumbled, “I’m finishing the nips.”
He drew large pepperoni-sized nipples on the woman and then set his pen down with a sigh.
“It’s shit,” he muttered.
“It’s good,” Isla said, “Now focus! We need enough to get everyone at this table high.”
“What about my brother?” Arnie asked.
Louisa scowled.
“Your dick head jock brother isn’t coming anywhere this.”
“Got it.”
“Holy fuck. She’s coming towards our table,” Isla whispered.
I craned my neck and observed Danny. I smiled and waved when I saw her. Arnie leaned back, observing. I didn’t bother cast a glance at the rugby table to see if Ben was watching — if he knew I was sitting with his twin brother. If it bothered him.
“Um... Liberty? Can we talk?”
“Yeah. No problem. Uh... guys, I’m gonna go.”
Arnie took my hand and pressed it to his lips.
“As you wish, Liberty.”
I snatched my hand away as my heart raced. Did he know what Ben would do if he saw that?
“Party’s after lights out tomorrow. I’ll come get you from your dorm.”
I’d never agreed to go to this party, so I slung my tote bag over my shoulder and followed Danny out of the cafeteria.
“What is it, Danny?”
“I wanted to talk to you about my sister.”
“Yasmin?”
“Yeah. I… Oh… I didn’t want to be the one to tell you…”
“Tell me what?”
“I heard a rumor that she’s going out with Ben.”
Competition For First
After lunch, I had advanced physics. I was so ready to meet for our first long lecture of the week. I didn’t recognize any of the other Year 13s in my class, so I picked a seat towards the back on my own. More students piled in and I hardly recognized anyone except Edward Chapman, a rugby boy who naturally sat next to one of the blonde girls up front. I was spacing out, doodling in my notes as I waited for our teacher when the last student entered the class.
Barnaby. Arnie Fox sidled in next to me. Tears pricked my eyes. He smelled exactly like Ben. It was like Ben was sitting next to me. But it wasn’t him. I would never be with him again. He’s already moved on. To Yasmin. Bitchy, racist Yasmin, who called her black sister her slave. I guess it made sense. She had soft, caramel skin, puckered lips and hair the color of honey. She had a perfect hourglass figure. Half-Argentinian, half-German, she was rich too. Another Jess.
Arnie elbowed me.
“Why so blue?” he whispered.
I yanked my notebook further onto my side of the table.
“None of your business,” I snapped.
“It’s a wonder my brother ever warmed up to you,” he grumbled.
“I don’t want to talk about your stupid fucking brother.”
I could feel myself starting to cry. I didn’t want to cry. I didn’t want to let loose every emotion. I hadn’t cried since we broke up. When Ben dropped me off in London, I’d been stone-faced and unreactive. I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of seeing me heartbroken. He convinced himself he was protecting me, and he didn’t care what I thought. Screw Ben.
