She wasn't going there. Louisiana, Texas...
"Chloe," she managed. "I just can't --"
"Please, Jill," Chloe pleaded. "It's a big stress for so many people on staff, with Paul Connor watching us, with so much at stake for the mission board, and..."
Well, there it was. How could she refuse?
"No way of getting out of this?" she muttered, resigned already to the fact that she would be traveling around the South with the oddest man she'd ever met.
"Thank you, Jill," Chloe said, hearing the acceptance there.
"There better be a Christmas bonus next December for being this man's handler," she said, hanging up the phone before she could say anything ruder.
She took a breath, thinking through all the ways this was going to change her life over the next few weeks --
"My handler."
She nearly jumped straight out of her seat at the sound of his deep voice, inches from her ear. Grimacing, she turned to face him.
He was smiling.
"I wasn't talking about --"
"Me?" he said, laughing. "Because I need a handler. And if I know Paul Connor, I know that he arranged it just so. But kudos to him for doing so in the one place in the world where the most beautiful woman in the world is living." He grinned even more broadly, shooting his eyes down to her feet. "I mean, check out your ankles."
Wow, he was a weirdo.
Before she could open her mouth to comment on this and tell him that he was a freak (because he was), the lights began to dim for the show. Just as the music began, he leaned over and whispered, "I'll personally insure that you get the best Christmas bonus you've ever gotten."
She bit back a sarcastic reply, just as Mickey took to the stage.
