The Story So Far
This is a brief summary of the series, feel free to skip to Chapter 1 if you recall it.
Mob Sorcery 1
Vince is an enforcer in Aulfair, the gateway for all things magic in the USA, and struggles to meet rent. A century ago, the Masquerade broke as mages, demihumans, and immortals fought alongside humans in the Great War, and now magic is as common as air. Vince makes a living working for demons, protecting drug shipments.
A major conference has put a halt to most work in the underworld, and means he needs a new employer. After a near-death encounter with Pola Lionetti, the chief enforcer of the wolffolk mafia, he’s hired by her sister, the mafia don Alessia Lionetti. His job is to take back Lionetti turf from a major conglomerate, Houou, and their pet company, Kaziern. He’s assigned a handler, Fia.
He hires a harpy, Nicki, to fly him around for his job, and his lionfolk roommate, Nina, provides him advice using her experience as a retired enforcer. After acquiring an upgraded magic focus from the fox shopkeeper Ally, he gets to work.
Nina gets upset that he put himself in danger, but also that he’s spending time with other women. They start a relationship, although she makes it clear that she’s keen for Vince to “start a pride.”
The next day, a failed assassination attempt is made by the vampire Juliet Forest. Vince’s former employer, an ancient demon called Quintus, tries to pressure Vince into leaving the mafia but backs off after Nina shows up. Quintus leaves a cryptic warning that “not every enemy of an enemy is a friend” and there’s more going on than meets the eye.
Mob Sorcery 2
After the assassination attempt, Vince learns of an internal faction within the Lionetti Family that opposes Alessia, led by Arnulfo Siragusa, whose daughter is a capo. Vince then meets an old friend, Salome, an Immanuel succubus who works independently from Quintus. She had history with Juliet Forest and agrees to help Vince off the books.
On the night of the big job, Vince seizes both of Kaziern’s facilities and defeats their chief enforcer. Except the entire thing was a trap. Kaziern has sent assassins after Pola and Alessia.
Vince rushes back to Lionetti Tower and kills the powerful necromancer Hamelin. At the top, he battles Juliet. He’s able to fool Juliet into thinking he’s some special immortal and she flees. Afterward, he finds the Yakuza in one of Kaziern’s facilities. They are open to working with the Lionettis and leave. That night, he finally becomes Pola’s “mate” and returns her interest in him.
Alessia prepares a new contract for Vince, as the situation has escalated beyond her expectations. He then learns that Ally was nearly killed by a Houou enforcer. Ally invites him to lunch with a friend. A mysterious Agent that uses illusions attempts to stop Vince from working for the Yakuza.
Ally’s lunch turns out to be with Mei Suwa, the head of Aulfair’s Yakuza branch. Mei wants to ally with the Lionettis. She also reveals that Vince has a powerful magic core, which is the source of his impressive magic.
After the meeting, corporate fox assassins attack in broad daylight and nearly kill Vince and Nicki. An innocent birdfolk and a police enforcer are killed. Police commander Erik Frost kills the foxes and attempts to intimidate Vince into ceasing his enforcer activities, but Vince is bailed out by the governor. Alessia is furious and plans to work with the Yakuza to get revenge on Houou. The mysterious illusioned agent then gives Vince a fake soul egg.
Mob Sorcery 3
Nicki moves in with Vince after the public assassination attempt. The police refuse to act, and nobody is knows if Houou attacked Vince or if it was a false flag by the Yakuza.
Quintus introduces Ashley to Vince and gives him a warning. Vince learns from Ally that she’s supplying the Yakuza with infusions and that her father is a retired Yakuza member in New York.
Alessia brings Vince and Nina with her to Kaziern’s HQ, where Houou ambushes them with an elite hit squad. The Yakuza intervenes. Agent appears furious about the entire situation, and Alessia finally agrees to work with Mei and the Yakuza to battle Houou.
The Yakuza will help the Lionettis in exchange for their help to steal a Chinese soul egg that Houou uses to power their entire business. Unbeknownst to anyone else, the Houou clan guardians Anzu and Momo Inaba anticipate the heist and are actively interested in Vince.
Kiyoko reveals that the Yakuza lack the necessary personnel to return the soul egg to China. Vince is invited to the Lionetti Family Christmas events, and both enjoys himself while witnessing internal Lionetti politics. On Christmas Eve, he joins Alessia, Fia, and Pola for the night, and finally makes Fia his girlfriend. It’s revealed that Agent is a powerful fox.
After Christmas, Alessia tasks Vince with assassinating Arnulfo Siragusa, because he has betrayed the Lionetti Family. The job goes south quickly, as the cartel is protecting him and a six-tail fox appears. Vince and Nina barely defeat the fox with the help of Gabriela, the cartel captain. Afterward, it turns out the fox was reported missing from Houou and may not have been a fox at all. As the New Year arrives, Vince is surrounded by friends and lovers, but schemes swirl around him.
Mob Sorcery 4
On New Year's Day, Agent tells Vince the fox who helped Arnulfo was from Knightsgate. The famous Chinese fox spirit Daji then reveals herself, as she’s inside the “fake” soul egg Agent gave Vince and has been lending him her power. She claims to want to serve him and live a life of indolent luxury, free of stress and troubles. Nina learns about the egg shortly afterward.
Vince focuses on training with Nina while Fia and Kiyoko plan the heist, which will take place in an old Sorcerers’ Guild vault purchased by Houou outside the city at the end of January. In order to break into the vault, Vince frees a Yakuza vault-cracker called Zaira that Immanuel has imprisoned. Ashley helps him and reveals she uses forbidden blood magic in the process.
During a meeting to finalize the heist, Mei offers to cover all expenses and doubles the pay for all enforcers, including Fia, Vince, and Nina. Vince meets Duilio, a retired capo brought back to help with the heist. Later, Vince meets Kiho, Ally’s mother, who is concerned about the current situation and the scheming by the Yakuza and Houou, but won’t act directly.
The heist proceeds with fewer Yakuza assisting than desired. The teams split up, and a six-tail fox named Teru severs Nina’s right arm before being killed. Vince retrieves the soul egg from the vault, but realizes it’s a fake copy of Daji’s, as the egg was switched in advance by the Inaba twins. Zaira is killed as they escape. Kiyoko leads the heavily wounded Lionetti team out, while Vince and Duilio meet with Mei in the forest.
Mei finally reveals her absolutely unexpected betrayal when she takes the fake egg and grows a ninth tail, becoming a mythical kyuubi. She tells Vince that she orchestrated the betrayal of Houou by Knightsgate and this entire scheme. Her intention was to become a kyuubi and lead all foxes separate from human rule. She tries to recruit Vince, but he refuses. During the battle, Duilio is killed, Kigenai collapses, and Mei’s ninth tail shatters. Vince relies on Daji’s power, but isn’t strong enough to defeat Mei.
