And now, we’re into a new generation of de Wolfe’s. Brace yourselves.
Here comes the hard part.
I swore I’d never write a death scene of a major hero, and I won’t, but we’re in the year 1300 A.D. in this novel. William de Wolfe was born in 1201 A.D., so by this time, he has passed away. Most of the original de Wolfe Pack has passed away from sheer old age. I kept them alive as long as I could, I promise, but by the time this book takes place, William has been gone for four years. Paris passed away four months after William did. Jemma is gone, also, as is Adam de Longley, Deinwald Ellsrod, and Michael de Bocage and pretty much everyone of that generation. Who’s left, you ask?
Jordan.
She’s still kicking, though she is extremely old. She was ten years younger than William, so that puts her in her late-eighties in this novel.
Why am I telling you this? So you won’t be surprised when you start reading and realize most of your old favorites are gone. We are into a new generation and, unfortunately, that means the old generation, at some point, must pass. But you will see how alive they still are through the eyes of Scott (the new head of the House of de Wolfe), Troy, Patrick, Blayth, and the others. And the grandchildren you meet all knew them and loved them.
Old knights never really die. They live on in their grandsons.
And what grandsons they are.
Markus is quite a man. He’s taller than his father, if you can believe that. I think Patrick, or Atty as he is called by the family, is my favorite brother. He was the very first brother who had his story told when I started writing Sons of de Wolfe. Therefore, it’s natural that Markus would be the first grandson to have his story told. Already, Markus is my favorite grandson.
You’ll see knights you recognize in this, like Hermes and Atreus de Norville, the “idiot” grandsons of Paris and William. Hector is their father, Evelyn their mother. Remember them from BlackWolfe, how they fought each other like morons? That was several years ago and now they’re all grown up with children of their own, but they still act like young knights in a fight. You’ll love the first chapter. There is also a new Kieran Hage, grandson of our beloved Kieran. He is a younger son of Alec Hage and Katheryn de Wolfe and very much like his grandfather. I hope to explore him more in the future.
Someone else you’re going to see in this story, very briefly, is Kerk le Sander. Remember him from Nighthawk? He is a long-time friend of Patrick’s who popped up when Patrick hastily married his wife. What some readers may not know is that Kerk is an Immortal – he’s a son of the God, Poseidon (no kidding), and has his story told in The Immortal Sea, part of a romance duet I did with NYT Bestselling author Sharon Hamilton. But in this book, Kerk is just a knight, still at Chillingham Castle, and, of course, they have no idea who he really is.
Let’s talk briefly about the history of Trastamara, which is a ruling house from Aragon in the 14th century. Before that, it was simply a noble family, which is mentioned in this book, but the House of Trastamara really didn’t rise to power until about sixty years after this book is set. The Kingdom of Aragon, and the Kingdom of Sobrarbe (Aragon’s precursor), make for interesting reading and was linked to the French dukedom of Aquitaine and, in later years, to the House of Hapsburg, among others.
And now, the usual pronunciation guide:
• Roget de Sauque: You’ll see this name throughout the book, so his name is pronounced ro-SHAY (soft “g” sound) duh Sock. That’s pretty much it – Sauque is pronounced “sock”
• Aleanor: Al-lenore
• Shand: Like “Shawn” with a “d” on the end – Shawnd
• Amabella, the heroine, is of Spanish descent. Her term of endearment is querida, which means “darling” in Spanish.
Now, I truly hope you enjoy Amabella and Markus’ story because it’s a good one full of really fun characters that I had a blast writing. You’ll fall in love with Amabella’s youngest children – they’re a hoot!
