Heartland Junk Part I: The End: A Zombie Apocalypse Serial

Heartland Junk Part I: The End: A Zombie Apocalypse Serial

Eli Nixon

Horror / Short Stories

In a quiet midwestern town, a terrifying plague gives three junkies a chance to live again. But they aren't the only ones given a second chance at life...It came at you first like an unexpected chill breeze on a warm day, the kind that makes you wrap your arms around yourself and shiver involuntarily. Most people never had a chance to figure out what was happening before it was too late. Only the lucky ones, the ones already ruined, like me, were able to defend ourselves. The terrifying first installment of Heartland Junk, a zombie apocalypse serial!--Rivet ignored my reply and began pacing, tearing at his hair with both hands. "They're in me, man. In my head. I can't...all night, they've been talking...whispering...telling me things." "Who has?" "These, I don't even know, man, these voices. And like, I'm seeing this darkness. It's so deep. I haven't touched a needle in two days, but please, Ray, please. You gotta help me out." He stopped pacing and turned to me, eyes pleading. He'd burst a blood vessel in his left eye and a tributary of red ran across the white from the pupil. He looked sick. I noticed his hands, now held out to me like a beggar's, were shaking slightly. This wasn't the Rivet I knew. "Give him some, Ray," Jennie's light voice floated up from the couch. I'd almost forgotten about her, watching Rivet carry on like this. It was frightening, in a way. "Can't you see he needs it?" "I, uh...yeah, yeah sure, man. Just let me..." I turned to look around the living room, searching among the overflowing ashtrays and crusted dishes for that little brown baggie filled with powder. Something pressed at the inside of my skull, like that feeling right before a killer headache. It was hard to think. I needed coffee, a cigarette, hell, a hit of my own wouldn't go down too rough. "I uh...Jen, what'd we do with it last night?" "Kitchen?" She sat up on the edge of the couch and let the quilt fall to her waist. She wasn't wearing a shirt or a bra. "Oopsie," she giggled lightly and bunched the quilt edge up to her shoulders. Rivet had stopped pacing and was staring at her like a row of corn had sprouted from her forehead. "It wasn't like that..." I started, hoping to head off another jealous outburst from Rivet, but he wasn't paying attention. He just kept staring at Jennie's forehead with that blank, lopsided expression, his eyes wide, unblinking. "...Rivet?" Jennie said cautiously. "You okay, hun?" Rivet licked his lips. Then he calmly leaned down and bit Jennie's ear off.

Free To Fly - 10 Poems on Getting Through

Free To Fly - 10 Poems on Getting Through

Paul Whybrow

Childrens / Picture Books / Animals / Dinosaurs

There's always more than one way of doing things. Sometimes you have to apply a few filters to screen out what's holding you back. Sharing who you are with the world is what your art is about. Take flight and scan the horizon. We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for. from Dead Poet's SocietyPaintings in Words is a book of poetry by Scottish artist and author, Jenni Munn, currently living in Western Australia. The poems are based on the authors observations of the world around her and have been created over the last 10 years, and compliled into this book. They capture some of the darkest, brightest, deepest and most passionate moments that life offers. The book offers poetry for both adults and children. All of the artwork in the book is original and has also been created by Jenni. Out of the quarrel with others we make rhetoric; out of the quarrel with ourselves we make poetry. ~W.B. Yeats

When Cellphones Go Crazy

When Cellphones Go Crazy

Jeremy Bursey

Fiction / Humor and Comedy / Suspense

Which bridges would you burn to meet the girl of your dreams? In a cellphone obsessed world, Avery Ward is about to find out the answer to that question for himself.Avery Ward has had limited success with relationships in his twenty-something years on earth, and they all had ended in disaster, including his most recent engagement to the straying Allison. As a student in psychology and a counselor-in-training, he feels it's important to analyze the mistakes of his past before embarking on those same mistakes in the future; it's the reason he's careful about the chances he takes. So, when he sees Melissa, the girl of his dreams, at a fraternity party one night, he calculates the risk in talking to her, deciding if she may or may not be crazy. But his limited exposure to examples of such high-class beauty overrides any sensibility he might have about holding back, so he goes in for the conversation. And, for a solid sixty seconds, he is enraptured by her words, her voice, and her stunning physical form. Bonus: She doesn't seem the least bit out of her mind. But, like the best things he finds in life, his moment of bliss is cut short when her cellphone rings and she disappears into the night to tend to her call. He attempts to find her again before the party ends to finish their conversation, but he has no luck. His dream girl has gotten away.Fortunately for his aching heart, serendipity has either a sense of humor or a need for answers, so many months later, fate brings Avery and Melissa back together in a new place. But will she remember him if he tries to get her attention? And will he even have the guts to talk to her again after having such ill luck with others in the past? And can they reconnect in spite of the incessant cellphone alerts causing an interruption to Avery's quest? Thanks to a friend's advice, Avery decides to pursue his dream girl no matter the risk. But thanks to the mistakes of that same friend, Avery Ward is about to embark on a journey that could cause him to lose more than just a chance at meeting his dream girl. Once again he has to assess the risk and decide if this one's worth gambling with fate and if fate will even allow him to fulfill that second attempt at initiating love.
