Greetings, citizen, and welcome to the Bunker! An underground, egalitarian dreamland, its people work diligently, eat slop, and watch the tube.Traitors are bent on destroying this heavenly utopia. Fortunately, Control has instituted a regime of security clearances to promote the most trustworthy and enlist their aid against the rising terrorist threat. There's absolutely nothing to worry about.Greetings, citizen. Your interest in Today's Edition has been noted by the authorities. By electing to access illegal, detrimental and highly subversive material, you have identified yourself as a traitor. Please turn yourself in to your Homeland Security neighborhood substation. Alternately, you may choose to stay where you are, and someone will be by to detain you shortly.Today's Edition does not exist. It has never existed. Rumors of a popular e-zine created by the Human Resources conglomerate and then spun off to the private sector for an outrageous amount of money are entirely false and should not be trusted. Likewise, no weekly publication in the Bunker was ever hijacked by traitors - repeatedly - as an instrument to achieve their own nefarious ends. Lastly, slander perpetrated against our most trusted and highly regarded citizens - those with an Alpha clearance - will not be tolerated. How exactly you came to possess knowledge of Today's Edition and where it might once have allegedly been published is surely one of the topics your interrogator will be fond of discussing with you. Why you would wish to spend your time passing on dangerous rumors and gossip is another. On that note, please be prepared to draw up a list of your fellow conspirators and which recent acts of sabotage, subterfuge, and calumny can be attributed to them.Thank you for your cooperation.

The Lens and the Looker (Book #1 of The Verona Trilogy)

The Lens and the Looker (Book #1 of The Verona Trilogy)

Lory Kaufman

Young Adult / Science Fiction & Fantasy / Historical Fiction

Book #1 of The Verona Trilogy. Three teens from an almost-Utopian 24th century society are kidnapped back in time to 14th century Verona Italy. There the teens have two choices. Adapt to the marsh medieval ways or - die! This is a real twist on a the dystopian themes, where medieval history and sword fights meet artificial intelligences and time travel, with a hint of Romeo and Juliet thrown in.With an average of over 4 stars in reader ratings, THE VERONA TRILOGY is a little-known time-travel gem. To entice you to try out this series, the author is offering the first book in the series for only 99 cents. Here’s what the series is about;THE LENS AND THE LOOKERBOOK #1 of The Verona Trilogy:Young Adult, Post-Dystopian FictionIt’s the 24th century and humans, with the help of artificial intelligences (A.I.s), have finally created the perfect post-dystopian society. To make equally perfect citizens for this world, the elders have created History Camps, full sized recreations of cities from Earth’s distant pasts. Here teens live the way their ancestors did, doing the same dirty jobs and experiencing the same degradations. History Camps teach youths not to repeat the mistakes that almost caused the planet to die. But not everything goes to plan.In this first of a trilogy, we meet three spoiled teens in the year 2347. Hansum almost 17, is good looking and athletic. Shamira, 15, is sassy, independent and an artistic genius. Lincoln, 14, is the smart-aleck. But you don’t have to scratch too far beneath the surface to find his insecurities. These three “hard cases” refuse the valuable lessons History Camps teach. But when they are kidnapped and taken back in time to 1347 Verona, Italy, they only have two choices; adapt to the harsh medieval ways or die. The dangers are many, their enemies are powerful, and safety is a long way away. It’s hardly the ideal environment to fall in love – but that’s exactly what happens. In an attempt to survive, the trio risks introducing technology from the future. It could save them – or it could change history.Series Overview:The Lens and the Looker is the first book of The Verona Trilogy. It’s followed by The Bronze and the Brimstone and The Loved and the Lost. The series takes readers along on the life-changing journey of three 24th century teens. While the three protagonists appear quite immature in the first half of The Lens and the Looker, this is not a series aimed exclusively at young teens. Lory Kaufman says he writes for readers 13 to 113, (and precocious 12-year-olds) This is borne out by the fact that about half the readership of the series is adult. What many readers say they love about this series is its wonderful mix of science fiction (the future) and historical fiction (the past). While there’s time travel, there are also sword fights, and while there are detailed descriptions of ancient technologies, the story also includes many colorful characters who just happen to be artificial intelligences. There’s allusions to a Romeo and Juliet love story and also characters who have murderous intentions toward the lovers. And the setting? Many readers are praising the accurately described historical setting of 14th century Verona Italy, where much of the story takes place.

E.P. Cowley

E.P. Cowley

When a young artist paints the Mayor's portrait, he hangs it in City Hall. The trouble is that this is no ordinary painting. Everyone sees something different and whose account is true? The painting launches a train of strange events in a world that teeters on the edge of apocalypse. The story is told in four linked accounts woven together, ending at the same moment in time.Fifteen-year old Letty has painted the Mayor's portrait. He hangs it in City Hall for all the world to see, but the trouble is that this is no ordinary painting. Everyone sees something different and whose account is true? But Letty's painting is only one strange occurrence in a world that teeters on the edge of apocalypse. Michael, the reluctant soldier, is forced to join the General's rag-tag army. Assigned to the regiment in the capitol city, he finds his way into a company of mysterious people who are working to rescue the city's orphans from destitution. A man named Joe is the leader of this strange crew and Michael learns to trust him, even in the abyss called Belltown. Thaddaeus, the forgotten artist, stirs up the crowd of regulars at The Tower Inn with his disturbing paintings. Is he mad? Or is he a prophet? Marching to the beat of his own interior music, he never asks what the world thinks. He is too busy straining after an elusive tune, following wherever it might lead. Mayor Jared Hobic is happily corrupt: sucking up to the General, cheating on his wife, slithering like a snake into his position of power and influence. Everything is going his way until a young girl paints his portrait. Now he's plagued by a knocking sound. Is it in his head? Is he losing his mind? And who is this mysterious man named Joe who eludes his grasp? Mayor Hobic is certainly beginning to lose his grip on his carefully constructed life. The story is told in four linked accounts woven together and ending at the same moment in time. Threaded throughout the tales are images of a strange man named Joe, the paintings of Letty; and the bread lady, mysterious and serene, who is always at her table in the market square.

The Absurd Secret Diary Of An Unborn Baby

The Absurd Secret Diary Of An Unborn Baby

David N Bending

David N Bending

Friday 17th October. Morning. D-Day!Bad omen in the sky! A good omen would be hard rain, lightningeven better! However, the sky is clear, and unfortunately for me,that is our cue to step into the plane.Bags are carefully packed, tightly secured, and I hope, fullytested, but instead of dreaming of flying to distant Greek islands, the ‘bags’ are tightly strapped to our mother’s backs.Skydiving! An unborn baby can't choose its mother, but this one really has drawn the short straw! This book is presented as a daily secret diary of an unborn. Our hero is the product of a drunken holiday fling between his mother and a intoxicated Scottish tourist. Unfortunately, his mother Sally Summers, has no intention on quitting her alcohol intake. Meanwhile, at eight weeks, and despite a body size of less than an inch and a half, this little person would experience first love. Dara Doo is the unborn daughter of one of Sally's friends, and serves as his love interest for the next 30 weeks or so. He must experience poisonous Australian snakes, plane hi-jacking,skydiving, While most expectant moms are improving their diet, beginning maternity vitamins and perhaps starting a fitness programme of light exercise, our hero's mom is consuming equal parts vodka, gin, and tobacco. Her routine of dangerous driving, partying, clubbing, and believe it or not, skydiving, is not altered. Along with the effects of his mother's dangerous addicted lifestyle, our hero must also deal with devious New Kid setting his sights on Dara's affection."Dara says I'm becoming more handsome as the weeks pass. Think she could be right!""Mother forgot to buy the frisky fried, chicken crisps I like...What do I get? Vodka on the rocks via the umbilical!" Review-It is well written and original. Bending's wit adds an intriguing element of dark humour to a serious topic. I read on wondering how this little person would ever survive to full term. I recommend The Absurd Secret Diary Of An Unborn Baby to those looking for something different in their next read. By William R. Potter for Reader's Choice Book Reviews
