“Simon, I don’t know what to say because you’re right.” Her gaze met his. “The feeling is there, and you know it, but those words . . . I just can’t seem . . .” She glanced down at her sweaty palms and wiped them on her jeans. “I don’t know. They’re just words, I know, and not a death sentence . . . but . . .” She took a deep breath and swallowed hard. “I love you too.”
“What did you just say?” He tipped her chin up and stared into her eyes. His held a hint of sparkle.
“I love you, Simon. I know it’s been a long time coming, but now, with you, I guess I’m willing to take the chance.” She held his gaze with hers. “Because loving you is a feeling I like, and neither of us knows what the future holds. So yes, I can say it now. I love you because I’ve finally realized that life’s too short and there’s no point in trying to avoid pain—it’s part of living, right?”
“I’m glad you finally see it that way and have stopped wrestling with all your ghosts.” He slid his arm from around Addie and got down on one knee beside the sofa and flipped open the top of the blue box. “Addie Greyborne, will you do me the honor of being my wife?”
Addie stared at the tiny, sparkling diamonds that encircled a dazzling emerald as he slid it onto her not-bare-anymore ring finger—and grinned. It was a perfect match to the earrings he’d given her for Christmas.
“Yes, yes!” She flung her arms around his neck. “I’ll marry you. I want to live on this wacky train we call life with you and only you, no matter what our future holds and for as long as we can.” She drew back and stared into his tear-dampened eyes, dropping her gaze to his lips . . . so close to hers. “I love you so, so much.” She grazed his cheek with feather-like kisses as her lips searched out his.
