The spell thieves, p.17
The Spell Thieves, page 17
“I’ll leave you to do what you need to, but don’t be late,” said Avery as she walked off.
All Zarya could think of was the box she’d left in the infirmary. She planned to get it, then go upstairs and finally shower and change into some clean clothes. And see Pan. She had a lot to do in an hour, and she wasn’t about to test Avery by being even a second late.
With the box her grandma gave her, she went upstairs. After a quick shower and fresh clothes, she knocked on Pan’s door. When there was no sound, she opened it to see it was empty. Since he wasn’t one to study, she guessed he might be in the kitchen eating or in the garden shed.
Zarya headed back downstairs. It was late. Even Glinda wasn’t in the kitchen. Needing to see Pan and share the good news, she went out to the backyard. The cool night air filled her lungs, the freshness clearing her mind after being locked up inside. She stopped and took a deep breath, enjoying the smell of the grass and perfumed flowers. The hint of the coolness was also a reminder Samhain wasn’t far away.
A small light fluttered in front of her, and she swatted it away, thinking it was a bug. Then she sensed the magic and looked closer. It appeared to be a miniature envelope, fluttering in the air.
With a pop and a spark, the letter opened. Her blood curdled at the note.
Enjoyed the attacks?
You won’t survive the next one.
Zarya flicked the letter in the air and cast a spell setting it alight.
Don’t you count on it.
She might be on the back foot, but she was ready to face Abaddon.
