“Uh—yes, of course,” Payton said, startled by Oz’s clap on his back.
I laughed. Payton was going to have the shock of his life at the base. Where ISAN was orderly, we were chaos. Beautiful chaos. Family chaos.
We had many things to consider when we got to the base. One thing for sure—we would set up a team to search for the missing parents, and locate the CODE children as my mother had requested. As for my team, we would head for South Korea. My gut told me we would find more answers there.
While the boys fell into conversation about strategy, I sat between Brooke and Reyna. I looked behind me to Tamara, Naomi, Mia, Nina, and Justine. But Cleo was missing. She unknowingly had cracked the sonic barrier and had helped me, too. She must have tons of questions.
I smiled at all of them, and they in returned a smile to me, and each other. No words were needed. There was a mutual understanding of respect and loyalty.
How strong we were when we worked as a team. Each beautiful in their own gifts. Each strong woman with a mind of her own. Each of them my friend. My family.
We would fight for justice.
We would fight for peace.
We would bring the rest of ISAN down.
When Rhett walked to the back window, I left my friends and sat beside him. He placed an arm around me, his other arm around Avary, who was fast asleep. While we exchanged loving glances, he kissed my lips, then we stared at our daughter all the way home.
