ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
This book is far from my first but it’s most likely my best. I’ve been writing novels like this one for about eight years, but it’s the first project I’ve taken on that I can confidently describe as “a team effort.”
I truly believe this effort is the reason for it being the best of my books to date. Hands-down, it is the most solidly researched, edited, and carefully vetted book of mine, and I believe those elements elevate the finished product to one that I will always be proud of.
However, none of this “elevation of craft” is due to my own skill—it’s down to the talents and hard work of the team at Bookouture (who originally published this book as Containment in 2020. To Emily Gowers, the editing team, and all the rest who took part in this project to create something incredible, this book is equally yours as it is mine. You took a decent idea and promising outline and helped me turn a rough draft into the most polished, professional, and (I believe) well-written piece of fiction I have ever completed.
I truly hope the results speak for themselves; but no matter the outcome, I feel incredibly blessed and humbled to be able to count myself among your ranks. Thank you for your time and effort working with me.
I can’t mention the team’s help at Bookouture without also mentioning my team here at home. To Emily (my wife), this project would not have been possible without you. The initial concept for this book and its main premise was based on a conversation we had almost a year ago, and you helped develop that thread into something marketable and (hopefully) entertaining to read about. More importantly, you have been with me through the many ups and many (terrifying) downs in my author career, and it has been your constant and never-ending support that kept me pushing forward. I love you.
Finally, to all the friends and acquaintances who sat with me, worked with me, laughed with me, and drank beer with me—this ‘writer life’ is no walk in the park. Thank you for helping me through it, and I only hope to be able to return the favor one day.
